Q: Patient Activity After Right Chest Pacemaker Implant

I'm not sure who to direct this question to. Yesterday my brother-in-law had to have a pacemaker inserted in the right shoulder/chest region rather than the usual left side placement. He is an avid sport rifleman and is also right-handed. He is 58 years old white male with a history of valve replacement and heart attacks. He is stressfully upset with the right placement because of his fear of not being able to regain his sport. Is there a way to protect the right pocketed area of the pacemaker from the rifle recoil? I promised him I would search for an answer. He believes that football shoulder pads or bullet proof vest materials would not shield the impact of the recoil. Can you find out who might be able to help with this? After my major back surgery, i'm convinced that there is always a way to get back into a full active life with non-frustrating limitations. Also, I can see that my brother-in-law may go into deep depression if he's not given hope for a "normal" life.

Thank you.

It is puzzling why the pacemaker was sited on the dominant side - i'm afraid it wouldn't really to possible to protect the pacemaker confidently. If the wires move then pacing is lost
