Q: Cervix Infection? Is It a Std?
asked by: shadi37 on January 7th, 2005

Went to doctor yesterday from my normal pain I get every month( which was different because it had been hurting to have sex and both my ovaries were hurting severely.... I think from a cyst but thats a whole other discussion, anyways the doc told me that I have an infection on my cervix. I asked him how I got it and he said "how do you get an infection in your intestines?" so, I left and thoght I knew what I should but read up and everything is saying std. Im married with a 2year old.

Your Cervix Problem
Well, from all of my research (which has been extensive latley) it sounds like pelvic inflammatory disease (pid) which can be caused by an std bacteria (generally chlamydia or gonnorhea). However I have read that some other non std bacteria could cause pid as well but less common.

Dr's won't tell you how you caught this stuff if you are married and they suspect it's an std because they don't want to be responsible for saying someone's partner is not faithful. They leave it to you to come to your own conclusions.

Ok-now im getting it.So, it could be an std but not necissarily and the reason they wont tell me how I caught it is because of my marriage. Well, all in all this sucks. I thank you very much for tying to explain this to me. Are you in the same boat as me? I do have to say though, that my pain is worse than some infection and ive been to the er and through 2 ultrasounds this week. Im wondering if the infection could be from whats going on down there. Thank you again. No one was telling me anything-not even doctors. It was very frustrating and is very scary to say the least.

Cervix Problems
Yes, I am kind of in the same boat I have std symptoms as well, but they cannot find an std or bacteria. I am a male that had epididymitis and they won't say how I could have caught it, they said "the same way you get a cold or any other bacteria" sound familiar? Antibiotics cleared it up, but it took several tries over several months. Now I have other symptoms that are std symptoms, but they cannot find any bacteria either.
My sister is a nurse for an obgyn and she told me that they won't tell me how I got it because of the marriage that is how I know that part. She said they see it all the time, the dr knows someone is cheating on someone, but can't get in the middle of it for legal reasons and since they can't find the exact bacteria they can't say it's an std.

I've Tried That
Yep, i've tried that, but since they can't actually find any bacteria they won't tell me it was caused by an std or that I have an std. I like you had a symptom (epididymitis) that is usually, but not always caused by std bacteria so they won't say I actually have one and therefore, I don't know that I do. Which is also why I can't really accuse my wife of anything.

This sucks. My meda are all gone and last week I got an ultrasound done to see what the rest of my abdominal pain is from. Suppose to get the results yesterday but ofcourse I didnt. I will be calling today- alot. Its just so sad that there are so many kinds of stds and well the scary part is if it is an std then what? Ive never been unfaithful to my husband and he says that he hasnt either but if you infact have an std then how did it get there? Dont you feel the way I do..That it has put a mistrust in your heart that even though they have said "no, I havent" then......You know?

There are other ways to contract std's other than sex... Rare as they are.

Yes it sucks, but what's even worse at least in my situation and sounds like in yours, they cannot detect an std, but we have some of the symptoms. Yes, it makes you wonder how it could happen. I have read other peoples posts on here that have the same type of problems I have, symptoms keep reappearing, but all tests come up negative. In my case my spouse has no symptoms and has tested negative for std's as well.

Has your spouse been tested for std's?

Extremely eHealthy
Well, sorry, but ya'll need different doctors. Regardless of whether or not you are married, a normal doctor will tell you what you "have" now, if they can't find a bacteria or std, or whatever, then I am sure they are telling you the truth. Why would they risk their medical license to save your marriage? No, that just isn't going to happen.

There also are certain types of infections down there caused just by normal bacteria. They aren't std's, just viruses, or bacterial infections. I once got an infection from taking baths at my apartment complex. There was some kind of bacteria in the water that caused it and it was the strangest thing I ever experienced.
But, if you are having constant problems with these "infections" then go see a different doctor.

Diagnosed Wrong
I was diagnosed with pid for I think 3 yrs everytime I went back to the doctor they would say oh pid again ... I never had any positive tests for an std.. Finally I got a second opinion and guess what it was ibs irritable bowel syndrome nothing close to an std and I had to put my bf through all this with me!! The last doctor I saw said that alot of times doctors will just say the first thing that comes to mind... If you dont think it is possible for you to have an std get tested for them all before you begin to get upset it will save you alot of stress.

I just had sex for the first time last nite, and the pain was of course bad, but unlike what I expected, it did not subside. It hurt to the point I could not continue, and it hurt for hours afterwards. I'm concerned I have PID or something horrible like that, but I haven't ever been sexually active until last nite! Ne ideas? I read over what was said before....a lot of it helped, so thanks in advance, too.

Hi Rydan,

I am not a doctor but it it is wrong to feel pain on intercourse, first time or not.
The fact that it is the first time means it wouldn't have been an STD (although some can be spread using fingers and tongues).
My first reaction is that you may have Vaginismus, which sounds awful but doesn't automaticaaly mean an infection. It means you could tense up at sex through fear or even just nerves. It being your first time there could be other issues like lack of lubrication or even a urine infection. You definately didn't leave a tampon in? The list is endless and anyone in their right mind would encourage you to see a doctor, they hear lots more embarressing stuff if that's what worries you. If they don't take you seriously, see another doctor.
The sooner you find out what it is the better, because if you are like me, you will worry constantly that it is something bad. Worrying is no fun, it's usually something simple so go and see a doc or a nurse.
If you are too embarresed to see the Doc, there are plenty of GUM(genito-urinary medicine) clinics around that are experts in this area and they are really great people to talk to.

Bacteria just 'happens' sometimes
I just saw my GYN for abdominal pain and she said it was a cervical infection. She said that there is 'normal' bacteria in the vagina and if the cervix is stimulated (in my case by way of stimulation of the g spot)...bacteria can travel up causing a infection. NO STD.
I know men get epiditimytis....and that is NOT a STD. Also men can get it several times especially if they do any kind of hevy lifting that can put a 'strain' to the area. It sounds obsurd, but its possible. (I used to work for a urologist). Also if a man has it, his partner does NOT need to be tested.
