Sharp pains in back of head Posted: 09-02-08 13:20pm
I have been suffering with sharp pains in
the back of my head for sometime. It
lasts only a few seconds but is now
becoming more frequent. My GP has said
it is Spondilitus. Do you know if there
is any cure for this or any exercises I
should do to ease it. It is really
getting me down now and wish it would just
go. Can you help.

I don't know if this thread has gotten any
more replies, but I just typed my symptoms
into google and this came up so I thought
I'd sign up and make a post of my own.
I'm 23 and I've been getting these pains
in my head since I was 16, they show up in
random places in my head at random times,
some days go by where I don't feel them at
all, and some days they are so frequent
they almost drive me insane.
I've had CT scans, been on a couple of
different medications, even started up a
little tylenol addiction and nothing has
been able to fully cure the pain.
Lately I've been experiencing confusion,
cloudy feeling in my head, even some
trouble reading and forming sentences in
my head, just this morning the pain got me
out of bed at 5:45am, I was tired,
disoriented, and scared. I really thought
I was having a stroke.
However, the pain stopped and I went about
my daily routine. After I was done, and
came back home, it started up again, but
now I find myself irritable and quick to
anger for no reason.
I also find that when I get distracted
with something I enjoy doing I don't get
the pains as much which leads me to
believe it might be stress related, the
one theory that I'm leaning towards is the
Ice Pick headaches, that worries me a lot
less than the thought of having a brain
aneurysm.
So if anyone has come up with a solution
yet, I would appreciate it, I'm going to
try and find some time to see a doctor
this week, again, see what happens.
Thanks.

Ice Pick headache? Posted: 09-09-08 20:31pm
To Prometheus 7-
I have been reading through this because
my son who is 15 has complained of these
headaches over the past couple of years.
Maybe 15 or 20 times total. This past
year he has mentioned them more frequently
and actually suffered one right in front
of my eyes. Went to the doctor and he
suggested a diary of sorts to track when
they happened, what activity was taking
place, any other specific information that
may be relevant and so on.
Additionally, we have an MRI scheduled for
tomorrow BUT he wears braces so I am
waiting to make sure this can even take
place.
One other item to consider - the doctor
suggested a connection between these
headaches and sinus issues (allergies,
asthma, seasonal colds, etc.) again the
journal may help identify such a
connection.
I see these episodes as being very
debilitating at the time and being the
constant worrier I am - I contemplate
tumors, cancer, strokes, aneurysm and so
on. But after reading through this forum
and others, I think this is a more common
form of headache that is not typically
discussed like migraines and so on.
However, I will keep you all posted as we
obtain more results.
In the meantime - Good Luck

Well, did the MRI and Thank God - all is
normal/negative. This is such a scary
thing to deal with - all the what ifs and
maybes. As I have been reading up on the
"ice pick" headache, I think this is just
a stand alone phenomenon that some
experience for numerous reasons. I am
thinking my sons may be linked to caffeine
and/or anxiety. He is going to continue
with the journal and hopefully if these
continue in his life he will be able to
track down the cause or situation that
makes them appear. To all of you I wish
the best and good luck.

my husband... Posted: 10-02-08 17:23pm
My husband has been getting these "ice
pick headaches" for a few years now, i
also was very concerned that they could be
anurisms, strokes or a brain tumor or
something bad so i finally made him go to
the hospital. they did numerous tests,
head x-rays, mri. they gave us no answer.
the doctor was very honest and told us
that he had no idea what it could be and
that if we notice any type of triggers in
the futur we shuld let him know because he
is interested in finding out about what it
is. These headaches are very sharp
shooting pain in his head, momentarily
debilitating, last only a second or two
and happen in no certain place time or
circumstance. sometime often sometimes not
for several months, at work, in the
shower, the car, while sleeping.... I am
very concerned. have any of the other
sufferers of these strange headaches been
in military combat? i suspect that it
could be caused by something he
experianced in combat during the gulf war,
but it's just a theory. i have gotten no
other explaination....
