I posted some of this on the throat disorder forum.

Sometimes I feel like I can't swallow. It doesn't feel like a lump and it doesn't hurt. It occurs when i'm eating but sometimes when i'm not eating. It feels like my throat is tight or closed and sometimes affects my breathing, and I need to breath through my mouth. For example, when you swallow, you can't breathe. It hasn't happened for a long time until recently. I get really scared when it happens and it just makes it worse. When I was really young I had some type of anxiety that affects teens. My mother said I couldn't breathe and would faint. I remember always going to the doctor and getting shots. I'm twenty now and am always tired and never have energy. But then again I was always weak as a child. I always think the worst for everything, like when my kitten was sick. She was dying I just knew it. It turned out she just had an infection. During that week she was sick, that's when my symptoms got the worst its ever been. My mother thinks I have thyroid, my dad and sister think I have anxiety and stress and my little sister thinks it all in my head and i'm making myself think I have symptoms. I have nothing to be stressed about. Even though my little sister is saying i'm stressing myself out from making myself believe I have symptoms. The only thing is I wish I could ice skate more! I'm scared of going to the doctor. I'm freightened about them taking blood and doing all these tests and finding something really bad wrong with me. Then there will be no cure for what they find. Then i'll pass out cause they used a needle. I don't want them giving me any shots cause it will hurt. I'm even scared about going to the dentist and I know what they will do! I've also been a vegetarian for almost a year now. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. What will the doctor ask and what will the doctor exactly check for?

It sounds like you might have a thyroid disorder.. Maybe hyperthyroid because of the lump in your throat but it could also be hypo because you also have some symptoms of that.. I am afraid that to diagnose this.. You must have blood drawn. It doesnt' take long.. It's just a few seconds and then it's done..If it hurts too much.. Clench your wrist and look the other way and it will be over before you know it.. I used to hate shots.. I still twinge a little but it's not as bad as it used to be.. What they will ask you about is your symptoms and they will check you for hypo or hyperthyroid or graves disease. If you are diagnosed with either hypo or hyper you will be given a pill that you must take everyday for the rest of your life but I don't really know about graves disease. I know.. You prob don't like the idea of taking a pill everyday.. I don't either.. I also have hypothyroid.. I have a tendency to forget my pill..(note to self.. Take pill..Lol) hypothyroid isn't all that serious as long as you take your med and same for hyper..

Good luck and let me know what happens.

I found some very useful info for your situation.. Chances are it's thryoid becuase a thryoid disease could cause a goiter (enlarged thryoid gland) and that may be the lump in your throat.

Your problem sounds more stress or anxiety related to me - still i'd have blood tests done just to rule out anything else - usually wise. Remember stress &/or anxiety don't have to have some supposedly real xause - they can simply exist some of us are more easily stressed or suffer from anxiety than others.

As to dealing with stress, that is up to you & whether you are prepared to act to overcome the problem??

There are many ways to do this :

1. Natural supplements such as 5htp, st johns wort, sam-e, vitamin b, dhea etc

2. Courses in stress management, assertiveness, conflict resolution etc - often free or cheap at community or health centres

3.Read sam obitz book - been there done that do this

4. Yoga, pilates, meditation, relaxation etc

I've received the blood results today and they checked for thyroid and someother things. Everything came back normal and the dr says it looks like anxiety, but he didn't even bother checking my throat. He wants me to take lexapro and to see him in two weeks. My father takes the same medicine but says it can make you stop breathing and I do not want to get addicted to something like that. Are they any anxiety meds I can find at the store that don't have serious side effects.

Ok, Fair Enough>> Explanations
First if you're stressed or anxious & rmember these are things you don't always realize you're feeling - they can be very subconscious!! - you should first try things totally nontablet - like pilates, meditation, relaxation (there are some good tapes, dvd's & videos around to help you with these.

The sam obitz book is another ssourse of non-tablet help (google sam obitz & you can order the book on-line less than $20).

The above suggestions take awhile to get through to your sub-conscious & so start actually working!! But if you learn how to use & actually put them into practise they can help you in any stressful or anxiety type situation for life.

The natural meds I mentioned you can get from most health food stores or on-line (google under each - or on-line pharmacies or biosynergy or club natural both on-line).

5htp is a form of tryptophan which is in many foods we eat & is converted to 5htp & sent through our body to our brain & to our seroronin deposits there to balance stress - but sometimes our system doesn't work properly so this doesn't happen or if we become overloaded it doesn't happen "enough" - not enough gets through - so you can take 5htp supplements start at 50 mg once a day & if after 3-6 weeks no real change up to 100 then higher as needed max dose i've seen is 300mg perday but you can read about all the details on line just google 5htp.

St johns wort (a problem re pregnancy but otherwise ok) also reduces stress levels as does vitamin b (also long hot baths with candles, a drink & a good book - another form of relaxation). Buy at chemist/pharmacy or health food store.

Dhea - google for the full scientific name - but again basically it puts into our system chemicals that are out of balance - can also up your sex drive!!

Sam-e is another stress chemical balancer, I take 5htp, sam-e & vitamin b.

A psych I know also recommends a walk 30-60 mins every morning around dawn as even if its overcast there's something in the sunsrays at this hour that works on our serotonin levels & reduces stress.

If you'er still confused pm me.

Alternative Meds
Thanks purple for this info. I've not heard of any of them and I thought i've read everything on anxiety! I'm going to look them up right now. I'm on lexapro right now and it has lowered my sex drive big time, but other than that it seems to be working so i'm hesitant to change it. I have had mild anxiety attacks a few times to where I couldn't swallow, then it turned to big time panic attack! My husband was trying to give me a drink of water and I was screaming at him that I can't swallow. Apparently swallowing has nothing to do with screaming. Lol.
