Q: Eating With Wired Jaw

My friend had his jaw wired shut a few days ago, broke it in two spots in a skateboarding accident. I was wondering what is the best thing for him to eat that will help him keep his weight up? I searched for answers on google and many of the topics I found were for people who had their jaw wired shut to lose weight. He's already a pretty thin guy, he's 17 and has a high metabolism. He eats like a lion, so i'm worried that he'll lose weight he doesn't have to lose if he doesn't eat properly. Anything that will go through a straw that's not too thick!

Broken Jaw And Nutrition
Sounds like a bad deal... I know about it too since ive had my jaw broken for over a month now and most of it with my jaw wired shut like your friend. Basically all ive been eating are ensure drinks ( nutrition supplement drink, boost and generic brands also available) with a milk shake or two mixed in whenever im out and hungry at any particular moment. I was in formed by my oral surgen that losing weight is going to be a hard thing to avoid. Being an athlete losing and gaining weight is something ive studied for a while. Protein drinks with ensure or boost should provide the necessary nutrition for your friend.

Also suggested to me was blending different foods and obviously drinking them. Depending on what kind of help your friend has, parents friends etc. This might be something he wants to look in to. Personally ive stayed away from this because picking up an already made drink is much less time consuming.

Ive lost ten pounds since I broke my jaw so tell your friend to be ready for some weight loss. Tell him I hope he gets better soon and to stay off his skate board till he is well healed. He doesnt want to mess with his face

Ensure, boost and many other of the store branded nutrition drinks are an excellent way to maintain a decent weight status.

They have super high calorie formulas and I had to drink those along with the extra protien drinks after back surgery because for almost 7 weeks I was unable to eat due to post anesthesia nausea.

I still lost weight but it could have been much worse. Mixing those high calorie drinks along with ice cream to make a high calorie milk shake is fantastic and addicting! 8)

good luck and I hope this helps.

P.S. Boost is less expensive at sams then the ensure and is better in my opinion.

my mouth is shut right now from playing soccer.. he needs to be eating around 5 or 6 times a day, because the food doesn't sit for very long. You would be suprised at how much you really can blend. A really good cereal to blend is special k cinnamon pecan, and steak will even work if you put enough beef broth. Just make sure he eats plenty of fattening things, like butter, cheese, milk, ice cream, etc. go to the store and find a bunch of soups that look good, and blend them up. Yogurt and pudding work well, and carnation instant breakfast is like a full meal, it tastes good, and it comes in different flavors. Oh yeah, you can blend pies too. I understand how scary that situation can be though...I only weigh about 105 pounds, and I've only lost 5 pounds, which was in the first week, the entire time I've been wired shut. So just stick by some of those rules and I bet he'll be fine =]

breathspray is nice too.

You can eat lots of foods
Since my son has broken his jaw we have tried many different foods. He tried the ensure and hated the taste so he was not fond of them.W e have tried a liquid diet with lots of foods. I hope that it may be helpful to someone.

drinking your meals
My 16 yr old son was recently n car wreck and has jaw wired 4 8 weeks. I have become very inventive with the blender. Somethings just dont puree well no matter how much broth, milk, juice you put in it. Just try it and see. I test everything to see how hard it will be to get it through a straw and to see how it taste. I have thrown lots down the sink, but have actually been pretty impressed as well.
His favorite so far is:
pizza sauce, a little paresan cheese, and a little water; mix in the blender, and
1 cup breyers vanilla ice cream, 1/2 choc. ensure drink, 4 oreo cookies (put some muscle juice powder in there to boost the protien sometimes); mix in the blender.

i had my jaw wired shut almost 2 weeks ago. I eat nothing but ensure and oreo cookie shakes. I've realize breaking your jaw might be the worst bone you can break in your body because this is truly HELL!

I can wait to actually get unwired and take a bite of my favorite foods again. 5 more weeks to go Sad

I've had good luck drinking a roast slow cooked on low for a long time. Add some carrots and potatoes, even mix in some beef broth. Use plenty of water! Then I'll blend some roast and veggies using all the fat and meat juice in the slow cooker!! I always like to add a raw egg into my shakes too. A little extra protein, and you don't even know its there! Stay away from pineapples, way too pulpy!! Peaches, pitted and pealed mixed with some ice cream and half and half, is mighty tasty as well! All I know is when these wires come off, I'm ordering 3 orders of large french fries from McDonalds!!

my, 15, son got his jaw broken in 2 places 3 weeks ago. his starting weight was 120lbs. here it is only 3 weeks into the 8 weeks that he has, and he only weighs 102lbs.
FOODS WE HAVE FOUND:
*grind up reeses p.b. cups, place on top of your favorite ice cream, add ensure and blend.
* campbells chunky soups (in the blender)
* grind up your favorite cheese crackers(goldfish), add to a can of tomato soup with a little water.
* mcallisters country potato soup ( in the blender)
** we went so far as to cook a steak (med.),and baked potato.... I cut the steak into small pieces and ran in through the food proccessor, added 1/2 of the baked potato, salt/ pepper, and heinz 57. it tasted pretty good for a hungry 15 year old. just have to blend it really good. when you fix anything with potatoes be sure not to use alot of potatoes because they make the food thick. i hope this helps someone.
