I heard that people with asthma should not
use this new spray on tan. Is this true?
Would holding my breath during the 30
second session prevent any harmful
effects?

Spray Tan And Asthma Posted: 07-23-05 00:30am
I work in spray tanning salon, and never
had problems with asthmatics spray
tanning. We have a spray tan booth, and
the session lasts less than 1 minute.
If you are worried about the smell
affecting you, get the shop assistant give
you a whiff of the solution first. From
what I have seen of asthmatics (my dad is
one), certain smells affect him
immediately, so he knows not to use those
things.

tanning, go to

You Should Be Fine Posted: 07-26-05 21:58pm
I own my own spray tanning system and
suffer from asthma. I am able to spray
myself and others all day long and have no
problems. I don't think that there should
be much of a problem. There is only a
mist and unless you are being sprayed in a
small closed in area that shouldn't bother
you. My new solution has a good smell
too...So it should be fine.

Spray Tan / Asthma Posted: 08-12-05 05:46am
I have moderate, manageable asthma and I
have used the tan booths twice recently.
One of the biggest problems is that when
the spray hits your chest, it's really
cold and it makes you gasp (maybe that's
the asthma or does it happen with
everyone? It only happens when i'm
forward facing). Even the second time
round I thought I was prepared but ended
up gasping for air and panicking. You
can't breathe in between sprays (when
you're supposed to be turning round)
because the air is full of the mist.
It's really hard not to inhale loads of
the stuff. My asthma has been manageable
for years and I hardly notice it but since
my second session, i've been coughing and
wheezing very badly and had a really bad
attack a couple of nights ago. I can't
say it's as a direct result of the tan but
given that i'm normally a very healthy
person who works out/keeps fit/doesn't
smoke, there's nothing else at all in my
life that has changed which would cause my
asthma to get so dramatically bad. The
result of the tan is absolutely excellent
but I can't do this again until I have
found some way not to breathe it in. I
did tell the tanning studio that I have
asthma but they didn't offer me anything
in terms of protection.

Major Problems From Mystic Tan Posted: 05-31-06 22:40pm
I am under the care of a toxicologist and
a nephrologist(kidney Dr.) from repeated
exposure to mystic tan. I am a model and
had to go frequently. I was just told
last week from my Dr.'s that I now have
bleeding in my kidney's and my breathing
tests came back as if I was a smoker. I
was a pro track athlete until 2000 and
have never smoked. I realize this is
after many sessions in a small amount of
time, however, the products in mistic tan
are not fda approved for atomized
inhalation-only skin application. I want
to know if anyone else out there is having
similar problems. These chemicals are
also nephrotoxic-kidney poison. :(

My Problems.. Posted: 04-03-07 14:30pm
Well, since I have a family history of
skin cancer - my last hope for a tan was
the Mystic Tan. Much to my dismay - I
will never put myself through this form of
torture again:
Either the mist's cold temperature or the
fumes (or possibly both) caused me a
severe migraine headache each time. I
went the 1st time and I sort of went into
a shock where I began gasping (maybe the
sudden cold) and due to the fact that I
had a nose filter in and wasn't getting
enough oxygen - I got a bad headache.
The second time I went (4 days later), I
thought that if I wore coverage on my
stomach, faced backwards 1st, that I would
be okay. Unfortunately, I still went into
a gasping fit and when the session was
over, the migraine was so severe, I felt
dizzy as though I were about to faint. I
could not drive home for about 30-45
minutes - the headache so far has lasted
24 hours with painkillers. Please be
careful if you are sensitive to sudden
bursts of cold or strong fumes. Some can
take it fine like my buddies and some
can't - like me!

Mystic Victim #2 Posted: 07-12-07 19:34pm
Hi
I had the same thing happen to me. I went
twice to "Arizona Tan" & used the
Mystic Tan booth, first time no problems
whatsoever.
2nd time at a different location, within 2
seconds knew there was a major problem, my
head was like it was going to explode.
Thought maybe I was having a panic attack,
crawled out of the booth, gasping &
moaning out loud!
Shaking, sweating, not able to think
straight, tried to wipe myself off,
dressed almost blinded with pain, opened
the door, walked straight up to the
receptionist, (she looked freaked out),
mumbled something??? Somehow made it to
the truck, just wanted to go home &
lie down. Very short distance, crying all
the way made it, husband freaked out by my
appearance, wanted to take me to emergency
but I could barely talk...just wanted to
lie down.
Thought was having a stroke! Just needed
to relax & calm down!!
Took Tylneol Extra strength for 36 hours,
first every 2 hours then every 4 hours.
FOUR DAYS LATER, still taking 1-2 a day.
My head hurts when I bend over or cough. I
have made a doctors appointment for
tomorrow just to document this reaction.
I think what happened was this:
1st place had really high ceilings that
the walls did not reach to at all...no
problems except the stuff they spray comes
out a whole lot faster & stronger than
the video shows, but the pressure within
the room was able to dissipate
immediately.
2nd place had like 8 or 9 foot ceilings,
was almost entirely enclosed, the pressure
was so intense that I actually think that
I had a case of the bends, you know what
divers get?
This was so awful, I'm afraid of lasting
damage!
How have you been?

My Mystic tan problems Posted: 05-30-08 07:32am
I am so shocked but relieved to hear all
of your horrible experiences with Mystic
Tan. I thought I was a crazy person but
see I am not alone.
My cousin is getting married tomorrow and
being a super pale person who never tans,
I thought I would sign up for 3 Mystic Tan
sessions at a local salon. The booth is
totally enclosed and small but I didn't
think anything of it. My first session
was fine - no problems at all that I can
remember and besides streaks on my legs
from lotion I applied right before my
session, I was pleased with the results.
Then, the 2nd time, I completely panicked
when the sprays started and couldn't
breathe at all! I prayed for it to stop,
knowing it was only 14 seconds and when I
turned around, I was able to catch my
breath. But when I walked out of the
booth, my head, neck, shoulders and ears
were KILLING ME like someone had put my
neck in a vice. I just couldn't believe
the force of the sprays and how little I
could breathe and assumed I had just
panicked and tensed up, causing my pain.
I came home, did some Pilates and felt
better within an hour.
My 3rd session was yesterday and I thought
I was prepared - I practiced holding my
breath for long periods of time, hoping if
I could just hold it for the 14 seconds,
it would be OK. But, as soon as the spray
started, once again, I couldn't breathe
and panicked. I do NOT have asthma or
allergies of any kind but have had sinus
problems off and on for years. I stepped
out of the booth, feeling the much worse
than the last time - dizzy and
disoriented, it was a struggle to get
dressed and out to my car. I drove home
but in a daze and when I got home, drugged
myself up with painkillers and got a neck
massage from my mother, who was visiting.
I felt queazy for hours and had a headache
and neck ache ALL DAY LONG!
I will never get a Mystic tan again and to
add insult to injury, I don't believe the
booth was working for my final visit as I
didn't get nearly as dark as I did on past
visits. I called the salon who offered to
let me come back and do it again but I
told them I would never get a Mystic tan
again but didn't elaborate as to why.
Thanks to all of you for your posts - I am
staying away from Mystic after this
wedding and will just keep trying to
embrace my pale self or use self tanners
at home!
