My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer
earlier this year. She underwent a
radical masectomy of her left breast along
with a lymph nodal dissection. After the
dissection, it was found that her lymph
nodes were matted with cancerous tumors.
She then underwent aggressive chemotherapy
and radiation. We were told that her
bone scans, abdominal, chest and head
scans all came back negative.
About 4 weeks ago after completion of her
radiation therapy, blood work that was
drawn indicated a problem in her liver (i
believe it was abnormal enzyme activity).
We were told by her oncologist that they
weren't sure what this was from and wanted
to take another look at the blood work in
4 weeks.
Well, my wife is now in intensive care in
critical condition, and at first the
doctors didn't know what was happening.
She had a high fever, and unfortunately,
they havent been able to take a successful
cat scan. This is due to the fact that
she is in the middle of a manic depressive
(bipolar episode) and won't sit still for
the cat scans.
I am now being told by doctors that they
have found lesions on her liver.
Is it possible that her breast cancer
could have spread to her liver without
going to the bones or lungs?
I am frantically trying to understand what
is happening here and hope that someone
can help me. My wife is only 39, and we
have two young children.
Please help me if you have heard of this
before, and if there are any websites I
can visit to try to understand what is
going on, and what I need to do to prepare
for the situation that is unfolding in
front of me.

Hello
unfortunately it is very possible that the
lesions in the liver came before bones or
lungs. There is no way to predict where
the cancer will metastasize.
I sincerely hope she gets better. Breast
cancer can be a very aggressive disease,
but even for metastatic disease there are
options available.
I had breast cancer 7 years ago and had
mod rad. Mastectomy, radiation and chemo.
I've recently had a liver biopsy and have
been diagnosed with stage iv breast cancer
that has metstasized to my liver.
Doctors have wanted to try the new hormone
treatments. I think one was herceptin.
There is hope with these new drugs in pill
form. I have chosen to not have
treatment. I am a widow 76 years old.
I've had a great life so this is my
decision. However, I sincerely hope and
pray that your wife will have one of these
new treatments and that it will be
successful.
