I am a male in my late twenties. I have been quite a heavy user of alcohol over the past 10 years and have decided that it's in the best interests of my health to cease drinking immediately. I came to the realisation I was an alcoholic a long time ago but have only just found the motivation to give it the flick. Admitting this to myself hasn't been a difficult thing which may surprise some recovering alcoholics out there.
My drinking has largely been the result of depression and boredom but with a change in my goals and a focus on atteining them, I have found that alcohol really is holding me back.
Anyway, I haven't had a drink in eight weeks but I was wondering whether anyone out there can tell me how long it takes to cleanse the body of all traces of alcohol. Is there anything I can do to help my body recover from the damage that I may have done to myself as a result of habitual drinking?
I am willing to try any herbal remedy as long as it has some proven success.
Thanks

I think it takes up to 24 hours after your last drink for it to clear your system. You've damaged your liver permanently, but your liver can heal itself to an extent.

There are 2 herbal remedies with proven benefit to your liver - milk thistle (whose main ingredient it silymarin) and dandelion root. These are universally recommended.

Also, you should take some other nutrients - b vitamens, folic acid, vit e, vit c, vit a, inositol, selenium, n-acetyl-cysteine, n-acetyl-carnitine, l-carnitine, alpha lipoic acid, choline, taurine, glycine, glutamine, gluthione.

You can look for suppliments containing all the above, packaged especially for liver health in health food stores, but sometimes it's cheaper to buy most of that stuff individually.

Cruciferous veggies are good too - broccoli, garlic, cabbage, brussels sprouts.

Liver recovery due to damage caused by excessive alcohol use
I can personally attest to a solution. I was also a heavy drinker for 7 years. 3 months ago, I was hospitalized twice.. and was told my liver was failing. I had all the symptoms of liver alcohol-induced liver disease: jaundice, hair loss, blood tests were a train reck. I quit immediately and began a cleansing/improvement regamine of drinking antioxidant juice: 1oz three times daily. I was told this by a friend.. and was skeptical at first. However, yesterday, after only 3 months my latest blood tests came out as, and I quote the Dr. "... a miracle, absolutely perfect.. no problems.". So, THIS STUFF REALLY WORKS! I have also noticed increased energy, concentration, and less pain in my joints (I have arthritis).
