Ovaries...should They Stay Or Should They Go?
Posted: 10-24-03 08:24am

I'm in the process of scheduling a total hysterectomy. While I don't have a choice about the hysterectomy, I do have a choice about whether or not to keep my ovaries. There's no reason to believe that there's anything wrong with them. I'm 40, so menopause is not far away. Confused Some say to keep them and let my body 'do it's thing' as it's supposed to. Some say to let them take them 'while they're in there' to avoid problems later. I'm so confused!!! Question Question

Total?

It is a decision that has options, however I think I would look at my family history as one of the key indicators. As i'm sure you are well aware cancer is familiar in families. Just to lend a word of encouragement, I had a total hysterectomy in july and have had no problems except for hair loss to date. At mid-forties I felt their was no use in leaving anything in I didn't really need and have a risk of developing problems later. Best of wishes for surgery success.

I was just told that I need a hysterectomy 2 days ago and i'm confused too.I'm 42 and I don't need my ovaries and tubes but the dr said he is only taking my uterus out.I think I should get it all done at once so I don't have problems again and go through the surgery again since i'm 42 now. I'm really confused about it all.

Sad sorry to hear of your upcoming surgery. I had a complete hysterectomy at age 27, and I am now 30. I had endometriosis and many other things wrong with me at the time. I had one good ovary and one bad one and had to choose to keep the one good one. I was so scared to have to go back through another surgery I decided to have it removed as well. Well, now my endometriosis is back and the Dr. Wants me off my hormones and that is just not possible with me because I become suicidal and homicidal Twisted Evil without them. Whatever your reasons for surgery are, please take it from someone who has been through hell and back and wishes she had someone to give her this advise, "do whatever you can to keep your ovary." I hope this helps.

to Keep Or Not to Keep

Dont know if you have had surgery yet but my Dr. Said he was gonna only take what he needed to. He said why go through taking hormones everyday and I am only 38. He said why lose my sex drive, go through hot flashes, weight gain and other side affects all at once. Just let nature take its course. I had a vaginal done last wed. And feel fine. He had to take my uterus because it was about 1 1/2 sizes too big, and 1 ovary and tubes because it was bleeding. Thats the reason for the surgery because of bleeding for about 8 months straight. Good luck to you. Nancy

My Experience With Hysterectomy
Posted: 02-04-04 00:19am

Dear allrightalready,

i had a total hysterectomy about 4 years ago. My dr asked me if I wanted her to leave my ovaries or take them. She said that if I kept the ovaries, that I would have all the symptoms of my period except the bleeding. But, she also told me that if she took my ovaries, I would go through early menopause (i'm now 42) because the ovaries are what releases estrogen, that would mean that I would go through hormone therapy. To me, it was a no brainer - take the ovaries!!! I was having so much ovulation pain, that I would end up going to the hospital via ambulance. I had endometreosis (?), lots of scar tissue from previous surgeries, and some other rare osis something. But, there is something else you need to bring up to your Dr., when they do a hysterctomy, they also remove your cervix. Well, your bladder is attached to your uterus, so where does your bladder go when your cervix goes? It goes down. That is the problem im having now. My Dr. Neglected to tell me this, now I will probably end up having yet another surgery to lift my bladder. So, please ask your dr about doing something so that your bladder doesnt drop like mine did. I know have a problem with incontinence. Im too young for that. By the way, I no longer take hormone pills, I use the patch. Its much easier for me cause I would forget to take my pill everyday, and with the patch, you only put it on once a week. Anyway, I know this is a long message, but I hope it helps. Good luck my hysterectomy sister! :d

Ovaries - Stay Or Go?
Posted: 02-05-04 15:21pm

Well....Here I am again.
I had my complete hysterectomy 6 years ago; at age 34.
I already had 7 surgeries prior to that and in my opinion "enough is enough".
I opted to have both ovaries removed; because having to rely on estrogen for the rest of my life is a small price to pay compared to the problems that I was dealing with.
Of course the hot flashes are annoying; but not debilitating.
Decrease in the sexual drive? Um...No. But maybe it's because i'm the big 40 now - and I have found a partner who has re-sparked my interest.....(oh, but that's another chapter) (haha).

I was just so sick and tired of the ovulation pain; and pain in general.
Now - I have different health issues to deal with - assuming I have developed adhesions....(see my previous post in regards to that).
Still have no answers and my beloved doctor is not praticing now.
*sigh*
i wish you all the very best; and only you know your bodies and what might be right for you.
It is quite a personal decision; but my feeling was:
why take the risk of having to deal with the possibility of ovarian cancer down the line?
Love, peace and comfort to you all,
lori
