My 17 year old daughter was diagnosed with migraines (basal area). She would become groggy and disoriented. She had 3 of these migraines in two years (started at 15). In oct. She had a seizure-like episode with a migraine. This last week she had another. (seizure like activity with terrible headache afterwards.) cat scan, mri, eeg are all normal. She was on inderal but now the nuerologist put her on topamax. (she was on her period this last time, plus tired from finals, and stress with term paper)i am scared to death. I worry about this all the time. She will be going to college next year. Has anyone else gone through this? Any advice before I go nuts with worry.
Thanks

I have a daughter and son who have both seizures and migraine. My son can have a normal eeg at times, other times there are some abnormalitiey.

Topamax can be a good med for both seizures and migraine....

She will go far if she can learn to work around her triggers. You mentioned her cycle (a big one for my daughter too), stress....Lack of sleep can be another. Flickering lights affect my daughter a lot also....

You might ask if she can up her meds just before her cycle, by a pill or two, I have a friend who does this.....Ask the neuro.

My kids are 15 and 13, so I can understand that at 17 and with college ahead it is very scary for you. Educate yourself all you can on seizures and migraine.

Emedicine is a great source for both migraine variant and seizure info...

Epilepsy.Com is also very good and accurate.....

Hang in there mom!

17 Year Old With Basal Migraines And Now Has Had 2 Seizures
Thanks to those of you that have thought about us during this time. My daughter is on 50mg of topamax 2times daily. So far it has worked great. She is looking at several schools for basketball scholarships. I still worry but I can turn it off now for periods of time. I hope that this works and she does not have to up her dose of topamax. She has not had a seizure since being on it.

Leah831,
i have always had headaches, migrains included.
I'm thrilled that she is doing so well on the topamax, just becareful and make sure she eats. When they had me on it... Granted it was a much higher dose. I lost alot of weight.
For my headaches alot of times nothing works except laying down with a ice pack rotating it from where it hurts to the back of my neck.
Good luck....

Migrane n Seizure
Hi...

I read your message and i am very familiar with migranes and seizures. I am 22 this October, and have had migranes since i was 5 yrs old from an accident...I didnt experience any signs of seizures until i began high school. The stress with school, work, puberty everythin really hit me hard. I would daze off and just not focus, and even many times i would faint in class causin me to bite chunks off my toungue n hit my head harder. It is very important that your family and close friends know about ur medical condition because if anything would to happen they would know what to do to help. My migranes are veryyy severe. They start from the back n work their way up to my forehead. At this point i am cryin becuz no medicine helps it. It can last up to 3 days even until i go to the emergency room where they have to give me an IV and special ER meds to up my blood level asap... Once that is done i sleep for hours n i am great...sometimes i do have an aftershock of a small seizure.. usually my arm would go numb first that is my symptom..Always look for them so u are aware. During your cycle they are more likely to come. so be careful around machinery n vehicles. I have tried Topamax...that made it worseee for me. I have been on DEPAKOTE for 15 years and im doing just well now. I get seizures about 3 times a year which is great . Hope i helped .

Best Wishes.
