Q: Heart Pounding - Help!

Has anyone out there had the feeling that their heart is pounding hard? Most nights I can't sleep for hours because I lay there feeling my heart pounding. It's hard for me to explain this to my Dr. We are trying to figure out what is going on - but nothing has shown up on halter monitor. I have just gone through a mitral valve repair - 1 mo. Ago and was hoping this would eleviate this particular problem, but it has come back. I do take lopressor twice daily (for post-surgery prevention), but think I will need to be on it always. I do have times when hr is up. If anyone has had this problem and had it resolved, i'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Heart Pounding Hard
What do you mean pounding hard? Is it going fast too or just feels like it is pumping stronger than normal?

Halter monitors will not pick up anything unless it occurs while wearing the monitor. I suggest a portable monitor that you carry for a couple of weeks with you. Have the doctor show you how to hook this up to yuor body and to turn it on. Once the heart starts this problem, hook it up and turn it on. Once problem goes away leave it on for on or about one hour. Then turn it off and take to your doctor for review. This will either show a heart problem or not.

Good luck
god bless

This happened to me a few weeks ago aswell. I went to my bed and as soon as I was on my back, my heart was racing so hard, I could hear the aggressive beating in my head. I couldnt sleep that entire night. The doctor - who doesnt like me - just told me to eat more healthy food, what?

hey there, my names david im an 18 year old from australia and yeah I experience the same kind of thing, ill wake up or cant sleep coz I can feel my heart beating extremely fast and extremely loud like im listining to it through headphones? My doctor didnt really say anything either he just kind of looked at me funny like I was an fool but it does actually hurt quite a bit but then it will rapidly stop completely then beat normal and ill go on with life? Sorry I dont have an answer for you my doctor cant even give me one but just to let you know im in the same situation. if anybody can provide any explination or advice, he believes it may be a heart murmur but ive had a second opinion and its baffled everyone, thankyou for any advice david. Oh and also I have a higher than normal blood pressure that may contribute to anyone in the same situation try blood pressure? It may be related and get back to me please thankyou :)

I Have the Exact Same Thing!!
Im 22 and have been going through the exact same heart pounding/palpitations feeling too.Dont let the dr make you feel crazy because you are only young and its assumed theres nothing wrong with your heart.I had to insist on a ecg(which is good for de-stressing that its not critically serious) and a holter monitor which showed my heart was going crazy fast for small periods of time.Obviously stress makes it worse so the less you can worry about it the better but you should ask for a referral to a cardiologist so it can be further checked out.
My palpitations have seemed to ease up a little bit-i still by no means have any answers-but ive found eliminating everything containing any artificial sweetener from my diet helped me alot.Ive had bad wisdom teeth issues and was using this anti bacterial mouthwash for a few months that I had no idea had artificial sweetner in it-its worth a try.Just try not to stress too much about it and get proactive about insisting on answers from the doctor......Hope its getting better:)

Keep chasing it up with the doctors man-dont worry about how they treat you.At the end of the day its your body and you have to live with the bad effects....

Ive had a recurring chest pain for quite a while and its something called costochondritis-in other words an inflamed rib joint.Wierdly enough its not really near your ribs at all but right near your heart-but you can only assume its something not serious after everything serious has been checked out/ruled out through ecg and even a heart ultrasound maybe...

Maybe mention to your doctor that you have heard chest pain can be from something called costochondritis and see whats said?If it is anything like that try using a heatpack or even panadol/deine.....It takes quite a few months to go away and if its anything like mine then it goes and comes back for aggggges.Try googling costochondritis.

The heart pounding feeling could maybe be as a result of the chest pain because its upsetting you and you have no idea if its serious or not-if you really are getting no answers and have this bad chest pain you should consider going to your local emergency ward to check its nothing imminently serious. And take it easy with the hsc-its not as crazy serious as all the teachers make it out to be.Theres plenty of other options for uni-just do your best, get your assessments done now and maybe if you get the medical answers you need all this can be sorted out come exam time!!!Take care of yourself.....

I just posted about this in another topic about heart troubles i've had

i'm pretty young for any kind of problem, but I think it just stems from my heart murmur.

What I get... Isn't so much as alot of yours which I noticed one can be related to just the differences in pressure when you get up and lay down forgot who that was... But that could be the cause

what I get, is a normal beat i'd think, but it's very hard, and dense. I don't hear it like it would be stress, but I feel my actual heart, and chest thumping-woke my up once too

but it's just so strong, and dense it was shocking when I first got it

it's not fast, just extreemly hard-i get chest pains as well.

Boy, don't you wish doctors knew all like the act like they do lol all that ever happeneds is you go in, they said it can possibly this, or this, and give you medication and send you out-though i've never gotten any medication other than the crap I have to take before I go to the dentist which are 4 huge honkin horse pills!

i have nights where I can feel my heart pounding also, usually late in the night after taking an 80 mg lipitor pill before going to bed. Man that lipitor makes my heart pound so fast it is freaky.

Heart Pounding - Help!
Has anyone measured their blood pressure when this happens??

Digital bp meters are cheap. My omron has a squeeze bulb for pressure.

My heart pounds too when I lay down after eating certain fried foods
like fried chicken.

Sometimes my bp will hit 130/110 !! ... Pulse 80bpm
when I sit up, it goes down to 117/68 ... 68 bpm!

Dunno what's happening.

Drinking alchohol causes the same thing.

Anyone?

I to Have Had This Feeling
. For ten months now I have had this feeling of the heart beating extra hard. Which is more noticable when I go to bed with little noise distraction. I have also had a sense of balance problem when walking. It feels as if my cordination is off. I dont literally get pulled to one side of the other, it just feels as if I took a step in a man hole. Or it may feel as if the floor is pulling me to the ground. The only thing that has been determined is my bradycardia(38 bpm). I do to see the neurologist for a cat-scan, although I think this is a cardio problem. Cardiologist reffered me to them after running ecg and echocardiogram.
The dizziness I have learned to deal with, but the pounding heart I can not ignore due to having to go to sleep. At which point it is very annoying.
I think I may need some type of stress test, because when I wake up after sleeping I wont feel the pounding

Heart Beating Hard And Fast
I have experienced this problem for years, for me it is associated with eating and drinking alcohol. I take small doeses of tenormin ( a beta blocker ) which helps enormously. Also try magnesium / calcium suppliments. If I eat too much at once or certain foods (esp. Pasta) it's much worse.

I think the problem I have is related to vasodilation, eiosinophils (look that one up) and stress. Go to a heart specialist, ask for a holter monitior to wear at home. At the very least it may alieviate worries.

Personally, yes I think it would help greatly to cut out caffine (god forbid) eat well and do stress reduction type things, like exercise and meditation, maybe yoga.

Good luck

I just started to have this problem a while ago and I'm now afraid to fall asleep because when I wake up in the midle of the night. When I wake my hart is pounding so hard, like someone is punching me in the chest. I think the doctor already thinks that I am a hypochodriac so I would rather find somone who knows what could cause this.

Same here
Hi guyz, my i am 25 years old, having the same problem. It started few months ago.. again it happend yesterday night. I had a mithral valve balloon surgery 2 years ago.
Whoever having valve desease usually suffering such heart racing. And shortness of breath.
I suggest you to use high pillows while sleeping(or use 2 pillown together). Also drink more water. Daily excercise can reduce this problem.

If u never had any valve surgery, and having the same problem, then consult ur doctor immidietly.

heart pounding
i found that its blood pressure related by this i mean the higher the pressure the harder the heart has to beat. So drink plenty of water to stay detoxed and keep blood thinner for easier heart pumping. Also get a glucose monitor and keep your sugar levels below 100 by eating lower glycemic foods like protein and healthy fats (extra virgin olive oil). Turkey is fine for protein and hard vegetables for carbohydrates works good for me. I found that detoxing in a suana helps tremendously in the winter and drinking more water in the winter helps also. I also have mitral valve prolapse which makes this more noticeable. Exercise can strengthen the heart you can do this by walking for 4 minutes and then run for 1 minute at twice the speed you were walking. repeat this 4 times. I also use coq10 and resveratrol supplements and muscle milk after i work out. Calcium ,magnesium and potassium supplements are needed if you spend lots of time in a sauna or you will get leg cramps. also stop using caffein drinks get more sleep to to keep energy up and anything you apply to your body like lotion can affect your heart rate and blood pressure try stopping use of those for a while to see if that helps.

Hmm so it's not just me..
I'm 28 years old and have had this same heart pounding problem on and off again for at least 5 years. At present it is so bad that it annoys me during the day let alone at night. I've had a couple ECG's all of which showed up negative. It sounds like most of us are pretty young which is why the doctors don't seem to be taking much notice.

The blood pressure check and the take home heart monitor sound interesting, I'll give them a shot... and maybe a little exercise (I guess it's better than dieing!)

Jian, was yours the same as theres?
Iwonder Jian if you had anxiety, & yet some of these people seem to have phisical defects, don't get me wrong all illness can be cured by God if we have enough faith, but does God want us to learn the cures so we can help others? I have just learnt that helicobactor pylori can be the ultimate cause of heart disease, cancer & a host of other illnesses because it is in the gut & restricts our systems from absorbing the nutrients from the foods we eat which then makes our systems unbalanced of nutrients which is the innitial cause of illnesses. God wants to give us all good health & salvation but ultimately we have to submit our causes to him. Thankyou for your inspiration, so we all can pray for the health of the suffering!
