Q: How to Keep Duragesic Patches Attached And Waterproofed

I have been on duragesic pain patches for over a year. I had problems with the patches not sticking to my skin. I found that you can call the manufacturer's help line and they will send you a free box of johnson & johnson bioclusive wound management adhesive covers.

They are better than tegaderms and much much better than any kind of tape. I wish I had known about this during the summer when I had the most problems with the patches peeling off by themselves. They also are truly waterproof.

Anyway, on the back of each duragesic box of 5 patches is the
janssen customer help line (1-800-janssen or 1-800-526-7736).

They will require a control# from your duragesic box and your address.
They will then ship you out a free box of the wound management covers. Shipping is also free and takes about 3 days. I think they are doing this to ensure that duragesic patches work properly.
I also found that neither my pain mgt doctors nor the pharmacists knew about this service. They usually suggested buying oversized tegaderms which are expensive and hard to find. They now pass this info along to duragesic users.

Good luck and I hope this helps some others. ... Ken

Thanks Ken!
I don't have much problem in the winter, as I stretch my skin while applying them but during the summer, they do fall off. Thanks again for the info.
Sincerely,
sandy

The brand names seemed to work the best for me and they aren't so darn big. I guess due to insurance, everyone can't get them though. However I have taken the duragesic patches also and I got a really big waterproof band aid and would put over it and it helped somewhat.

I no longer take them due to them due to the numerous side effects.

Hope they are working better for you.

I just started using the sandoz version of the duragesic patch. (sandoz is duragesic= made in the same factory)

in florida you have to have the tegaderm or bioclusive to keep the patchs on. I was getting the duragesic with my own health insurance and they were only 20 a month now the genaric are 20 a month on my wifes insurance.

No more free bioclusive covers. Whenever I am at my docs office, I ask if they have any leftover tegaderm or iv covers, sometimes they have a bunch other times someone beats me to the punch.

Good advice though for the folks that are getting the brand duragesic.

Bioclusive From Jannsen
I have had such a hard time with my duragesic.

I called 1 800 jannsen and they asked me a million questions in voicemail then sent me to a representative that asked a million more questions.

I later found out that I am disqualified because I had a reaction to the duragesic on a stretch mark on my tummy below my waist. (this was after they told me to only wear them above my waist).

So, be careful what you say to them because their reps job is to disqualify you more than to help your duragesic patch stick.

After I got really upset with them, they told me it was a legal liability. Then she said "you can purchase them in any medical supply store". Umm, there isn't a liability to tell me where to go buy them???

Good luck. I'm allergic to latex and nothing works very well to stick it and its so expensive that my insurance just doubled the copay in august? The middle of the year!! That should be illegal!

Bioclusive And Duragesic
If there is this situation with jannsen about this bioclusive for duragesic users.. And they go to the extremes to disqualify you.. I'd say that they know that their product (duragesic) doesn't stick without the "bioclusive" and that just sounds like a good class action suit. There is no reason to not have five in each box of five duragesic.

I checked with the medical supply and about had a heart attack with the costs retail.. I can't believe they give these away to some, proving they are needed and yet others have to pay more than the cost of the duragesic, itself, to get another product to help it stick, hence: work.

I'm so very disgusted with this company. I can't wear the generic fentanyl patches because they literally are not like the brand name duragesic with the resevoir (sp?). The pharmacy told me that there is a generic with a resevoir like the named brand but no one will order it or knows anything about it, I guess.

you also can get the duragesic generic called "sandoz" and use those. Cvs has them but walgreens does not carry them. Walgreens and publix both use the mylan genaric and I had little to no success with those patchs.

Good luck,
brian

Duragesic
Thank you for the coupon information.

Interestingly enough, someone at walgreens told me abut sandoz. I'm glad I know who has it now. Thank you too.

length duragesic patches last
I have been on the patch for 3 years. I am from Canada and my patches are covered free. I have been on Ran-Fentanyl and ratio fentany.l My problem is that I can drain reservoir within 12 hours. Has anyone else have this problem. No one seems to know the answer.

RE: Sticking Problems
I have sticking problems too! Even Tegederm doesn't stick on when I take shower, so I have to wait and take a shower every 3 days, that's not going to fly this summer! I like to be CLEAN and not sweaty and stink! Plus when I sweat, the patches fall off, even the tegederm will come loose. I've tried duct tape, waterproof: bandaides, sports stape, tegederm, and blister covers (ALL supossedly WATERPROOF). I need the special covers, but because I wear Watson Brand patches (the best patches medicine wise) I cannot get Bioclusive from Jansen, and i'm not sure Watson sells or gives away patch covers, I left a message with them and have not heard back yet). I'm so frustrated! Sure, Mylan sticks well, but it lasted 24 hours then I suffered with withdrawal and all of my pain came back for the last 48 hours, it was HORRIBLE! I cannot wear Duragesic or Sandoz I'm allergic to their adhesives, the give me a severe rash kind of like Poison Ivy, bleeding and leaking (not to be gross) and it hurts, itches and burns. So Watson is the only brand I can wear. I may end up going back on oral meds if I cannot find a good waterproof cover and I don't want to take pills anymore! Anyone know if Watson helps patients with covers? Thanks.

To Canada101
Canada;

You may need to talk to your doctor and/or pharmacy about changing brands. Some brands aren't good for certain skin types. I drain the mylan patches in 24 hours, the Sandoz/Duragesic patches (same company) in about 40 or so hours. I changed to Watson and they don't last 3 full days but at least they last about 60 hours, so I think if my doctor has me change every 2 days, I'd be fine. My problem is keeping them ON, see above "sticking problems". Also try putting the patch in a different spot (put it on your arm if you usually put it on your back or chest, and vice versa). But I really think there is more going on with your patches than the location, its not normal to run out in 12 hours, so get to your doctor ASAP. Good luck Canada101. Hope I helped a bit.

Sincerely;

Josie

draining patches
Hi All

I have been using duragestic patches for a yr now i find sometimes they stick sometimes they dont i use tegaderm on them and dont get them wet by keeping my arm out of the bath i never have showers because of the patches.

I find on the third day the pain returns i thought i was imagining it but now reading some of your posts i now release i am right.

Why does this happen? i thought they released the medicine every hr is it the heat of your body that makes it release quicker i have heard if your body gets too hot you can overdose? so maybe it has to do with body heat and how fast you absorb it?

hey everyone i use micropore tape 3 millimetre width and keeps my patch secure. in uk we have just had our brandname changed from durogesic to matrifen..horrible side affect still the same nausea, headaches constipation yuck..been on then for year now and memory terrible too bamagirl,1...I was informed only to shower and not have a bath as your temp raises and you risk too much morphine going through because of body temperature..? i wonder if anyone else also experiences the itchy skin as i do but its only between shoulderbades of my back...i always wear my patch on my arm.

Duragesic Patches
I have used Fentanyl, Sandoz, and Watson brands. Fentanyl with the Myland of course, stays on the best, so I use these in the Summer months. When Winter comes, I switch over to other brands.
I've called Jansen for the Mylan coverings before. The others just said to use some tape or buy the Mylan (Tegaderm) at a Medical Supply place. The cost, I agree is outrageous! If I remember, I think 5 of them runs about $30 or so.
I was wearing the patches every 2 days, but I moved to another State and my new Dr. said OFF with 2 days and changed me to 3 days. I did it with NO problem. Didn't even notice the difference. I have good luck with the patches and pain relief.
They stick the best on my flank area. My upper chest sticks, but if I encounter a day of humidity....forget it. It's lifting on all the edges. I still wear it if it does lift for another day, and don't much notice any withdrawals or pain problems.
If you call Sandoz, they will give you some good ideas on what you can use to help keep it on, and they can tell you where you can wear THEIR patches. I think Sandoz isn't so particular as Duragesic on placement. I've always stuck to flank and chest anyway.
