Pain Under Left Rib
Mine started when I religiously started exercising. It went away and we just went through 5 weeks of home renovation. Stress. I moved a coffee table and that night, the pain came back so I think it is costochondritis. I asked my doctor a year ago and he said if it is surface pain, it is muscular. Drats. It usually only hurts when I lie down at night. I am so glad to find others who have this as I too thought it may be something bad. Whew. What a relief to find others. :d

Same Pain With Lumps
For about the past year I have also had pain under my left ribcage as well as a little under my right. It seems to radiate down my left side and even into my back. I have noticed lumps under the skin in these areas as well. Seems to be hurt more when sitting. I've had endoscopy, ct scans, blood work, colonoscopy, gyno tests-all came back normal. Celiac runs in the family, but tested negative for that. Lately, the pain has radiated down to my hips and pelvic area. I've noticed more bumps under my skin in these areas as well, but mainly swelling and tenderness. Has anyone else had the bumps under the skin in these areas or radiating pain toward the pelvis?

Pain Under Left Ribs,
Well hopefully this will put all your minds at rest, ive been suffering from pain under the left ribs, a feeling of like a ball under my left ribs, quite painfull and a pinching affect agianst my lower ribs, I have high blood pressure and angina, when I eat I feel ill and sickly, and a feely like a hiatas hernia, my doctor sent me for quite a few tests, it was discovered that I have a fatty liver, which is swollen there is no cure, fatty liver causes the spleen to swell, hopefully this will help you all, at last I know whats wrong.

Rib Pain
Hi, I have similar issues to what this post describes.
I am a 25 year old male, fairly healthy. I am 6 foot tall and about 85kgs so am slightly overweight.

For the last 4 years or so i've had various minor stomache problems - I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome but only minor.

However, I feel pain very often under my ribs on both sides - but especially my right side. It feels a bit like muscle pain but it's been there for years now. 6 months ago I had my appendix out, and a few months after that the pain has become 'different'. It's not very painful, but now it feels like there is something that shouldnt be there under my right rib (and sometimes my left). Sometimes when I move or bend over it feels like something is rubbing against something around my rib inside me.

I've had ultrasounds and ct scans before and nothing has ever come up. Since the pain hasn't ever been bad, I have never been too worried - but it seems to be getting worse..

What could this be?

I have it on good authority, the reason they cant find anything is because it is ibs, you have the colon that goes from one side to the other, look up spastic colon, and take advice from what it says, my spleen wasnt the only problem, my colon wanted to get a word in as well :? , how do I get it to ease off, with great difficultys, most doctors havent got a clue, one of the secrets is what you eat, and which foods make you feel like crap, some of the foods I learned to avode, by trying different foods I see which once give me mild pain and which ones really cause trouble and which ones dont, I will place a list of foods not to eat and a list of foods that are not to bad,
do not eat
------------

currys, they cause quite a bit of pain and colon spasams

chineese food, same as currys,

salad, I find gives me hell, avode like the plague

liver and onions with mashed potatoes and fresh carrots I find a medium meal of this is ok

scrambled egg on toast is good

cold meats in rolls, but leave beef alone

i also find if I eat kids sized meals lifes a bit better,

also dont eat at least 3 hours before bed, drink tea not coffee, alcohol of any form is a nono,

test different foods yourself, as you go along you will no what you can eat, but one thing always remember dont eat big meals, you will suffer trust me.

well i'm glad to know that i'm not some freak of nature and that others share my problem... My pain started in august (3 months ago) and I first noticed it while weight lifting (bench press)... At first it was a very intense pain in my lower-left ribcage that "wrapped" around my side to my back, but it only hurt when I moved certain ways or when I breathed or coughed. I thought I had simply pulled a rib muscle or ligament as I have done that before with similar symptoms... After a few days my pain dissipated but I could still feel it lightly when I took deep breaths or moved certain ways or sat in certain positions (especially lying on my back). After a few more days the pain went away and I thought no more of it, a pulled muscle. I have also put on about 30-40 lbs in the past year since I quit smoking. Then about 3 weeks later I woke up one morning and the pain was back, as severe as the first day... Again it dissipated over the next few days until it was gone, and everything was fine for a month or so, although I still could barely feel the pain once in awhile in a deep breath or cough... Then one night about 2 weeks ago I was laying in bed at night to sleep and I felt the pain lightly, and it continued to worsen over the next 30 minutes to excruciating and bringing tears to my eyes. I finally found a position I could manage and took some ibuprofen and finally fell asleep... Since this was the 3rd time I began to get very worried that it might be lung cancer, but the pain really isn't where my lungs are, and at most it would be at the very bottom of my lungs (i am 27 and smoked from 18 to 26), but after looking on the web I determined that since I had no other symptoms of lung cancer that it wasn't that (no fatigue, no abnormal cough, no coughing up blood, fever, etc)... As before the pain again dissipated over the next few days, but now it is an intermittent "light" pain in my lower rib cage that comes and goes from day to day... A few days I won't notice it and think its gone then it will be back out of the blue... I have decided if it gets severe again or the light pain doesn't go away in a few months then I will go to the doctor (since a strained/torn ligament can take up to 3-4 months to heal if not re-injured, and I think this is the most likely diagnosis), but I have very little faith in docotors these days since they seem to be mostly out to take my insurance for all they can get (although they may just be trying to help), and in the past I have had better luck at diagnosing myself correctly than the doctors have had... But at this point the pain is more a nuisance than anything, and doesn't affect my life in any way other than anxiety over what is causing it... Well I thought I would share my story, and if I ever find a correct diagnosis I will try to remember to share it here. Good luck to everyone, and I feel your pain!
 do not take any thing like ibrufen this will upset the stomach and cause ulcers this could be your cause of your pain due to the pain killers good luck

Hi, I also have a swollen area or lump on my left side in the front on the edge of my rib cage. It burns and tender at times and feels like it is being pinched when I am sitting at my desk.(i work in front of a computer all day) I have recently gained about 40 pounds. It is definitely worse now that I have gained weight. I also have alot of acid reflux, burning and indegestion. I also have a small hard knot about the size of a almond on my left side ribcage. It is not necesarrily painful in itself maybe a little tender, but it is noticable when I lay on my left side I can feel it when I run my fingers over my ribs. Alot of the time I feel as if I have a catch in my side.....Like when I was a kid and I had been running. To top it off, off and on I have a tingling or numb burning feeling under my shoulder blade on the left side of my back. Also a soreness in general on my left side, like the muscles of my ribcage are sore from yard work or something strenuous. All of this is on my left side....Nothing on the right. All of this together stresses me terribly. If I am stressed about it, which is most of the time....I feel like my chest is tight on the left side when I take a deep breath. Sorry to be so long, but I was wondering if anyone has found a solution or found out what was causing your problem. Do you have any of the other symptoms I have described.
I do remember that about 6 months ago I had bronchitis and for several days before I got over it, my chest became very sore when I coughed or breathed. This went away and became this annoying thing I have been dealing with. It does seem to get better if I take otc anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen.

Knot On Left Under Ribs
I have a knot just under my ribs on the left side. It's about the size of a quater, and the area feels hard when I push in on it. Sometimes it's painful, sometimes not.

I also tend to get a pea sized knot to the left of my navel on occasion. This knot isn't constant, it flares up every so often and hurts like hell.

When my left upper knot flares up really bad so does the pea sized knot usually.

My liver tends to hurt at the same time as well. Is all of this fatty liver? I am about 130lbs overweight. I am 24 years old. I have been told that I do have a fatty liver.

I also have ovarian cysts, and a host of female problems. So my biggest concern is all of this possibly being related to ovarian cancer. My gyno said she doesn't think I have ovarian cancer but she hasn't done any tests. She's guessing. I know the first place ovarian cancer spreads is to the stomach, and liver. So these pains scare the crap out of me.

I've had a ct scan but the knots apparently didn't show up on it.

I also have major gas, and bouts of constipation. However I did have my gall bladder removed in march, and gas is associated with that. So it makes self diagnosing this all the more confusing.

Please help.

Pain Left Side Under Ribcage
Hi all,

my pain is contant, a dull aching same as most of the posts I have read... It feels like it is gurgling sometimes???

A friend of mine was walking around the mall with me the other time massaging the same spot under his ribcage. I was amazed and asked him if he was having the same pains. He was... This leads me to think it may be something viral?

Im pretty stessed out with work at the moment also, so thats probally not helping things. Also I sold my car a few months ago so not being designated driver is probaly not helping things as im drinking more than usual.

Any advise appricated.

Pain Under Left Rib
I too have had the same symptoms, pain under left rib that radiates to my breast and now I have pain in my groin. I usually had great bowel movements, but for a month have experienced diarrhea and constipation. The constipation aggravates the left side considerable and I am thinking the pain under my left arm radiating to my breast is lymph nodes.

I have had blood work, parasite tests, upper gi, they found hiatal hernia, abdominal ultrasounds, pelvic and internal ultrasounds. They found a small cyst on my left ovaries. But doc said that was normal. I have some small kidney stones in my left kidney, but have had them there for years and all tests urine, xrays and scans indicate not kidney.

I am an enigma to my doctor, but the pain is real and frightening at times.
I am demanding more tests like the ca 125 tumor marker test for ovarian cancer, which does not have a lot of pre-symptoms.

Keep at it, demand a transvaginal ultrasound also.

Let's keep in touch.

Re: Same Pain
[quote="snlsn"]hey,
i've had the same pain since july 2004... It started when I was going to the gym everyday for about 3 hours, so I assumed I had just pulled a muscle. Then in october I found out I had mono, so I thought maybe the pain was my spleen, since the spleen is located in that area. Now, 9 months later it still hurts, to the point that I can't even run on the treadmill anymore. It seems to get worse after I drink alcohol or get stressed out/run down.... I've been to the doctor and they sent me for an ultrasound but I never heard the results so i'm assuming nothing showed up.

Any ideas?

I know this is an old post but I thought id respond for anyone else who had this problem...I work in a doctors office never and seriously never assume because you didn't get a call back on an ultra sound that everything must be fine ..Working in a doctors office I know that results get misent or lost all the time always call your doctor and make sure that they got your results this also makes them look at them because sometimes over worked staff can miss lay a recall into normal mail and it may not have been brought to your doctors attention. Point is always call:)

Pain Around Left Ribcage
About 10 days ago , while taking a walk , I got a sharp pain in my stomach or intestines . As soon as I got home I had a bout of diarrhea. Since then I have often had a bloated feeling after eating moderately and gas . I've also been constipated a couple of times . Starting about 4 days ago I have had a pain in my left ribcage which i've never had before . It an annoying pain but not severe , yet . When I rub the area it feels like a muscle pain . I should mention that I am a heavy drinker and some years ago ( 10 to be exact ) was told by a doc that I had a fatty liver . I have not seen a doctor as yet . Tomorrow I have an annual check up which includes a blood test / urine test . Back in april I had an annual stomach cancer exam ( balium ) but nothing was found . If nothing irregular shows up in the bood and urine tests ( if something does they'll immediately notify me ) , I guess it's off to the hospital to consult a physician . Glad to have someone to chat with about this . I am living the boondocks of japan !

hey I have a similar pain! Same place but it never swelled up... Yesterday I felt around it and there was a small hard bump I could move around.... Then it stopped hurting for a few seconds. I've had small sharp pains very little but only within the last week they've gotten so bad that yesterday I had pain for 30 mins and today i've had pain 3 times (and right now lasting for an hour). Going to the chiropractor in a few days so maybe I can figure it out. I've tried loosening my bra the last few days and even taking it off when the pain comes but it doesn't help (i use underwire))

Okay I just pulled myself out of a ball laying on the floor. That was horrible, I almost told my daughter to call 911, seriously. I didn't know if it was my appendix or something, finally I was able to pull out of it and now I just want to know what the heck that was!! Horrible left side sharp pain directly (almost on) under the rib cage. I didn't know if something burst or something, but apparenlty that is all on the right side. I am relieved to see others with the same thing, that was horrible! So what do we do? From what I read no one seems to know what it is.

I'm going to try to find a new doctor to see if someone else can figure this out for me. I'm wondering if it's an ulcer? I had gastric bypass 2 years ago and had a lot of acid issues post surgery (went through a hole in my stomach and burned through my incision...Most painful thing i've ever felt in my life and had it acid continuously pouring from my body for 3 months). I think the 2 are connected but I have to find a doctor who has delt with something like this before. Very rare.

hi
i am writing for my mom. She also had the gastric bypass done well over 3 years ago and she is experincing the same kind of pain. She has had several tests done and none of her doctors seem to know what the problem is. One thing I can suggest is a hernia. She had this surgery done nearly 2 weeks ago, but it hasn't helped with her pain. Her doctor said that most people who have the gastric done end up with a hernia and have to have it snipped, try asking your doctor who performed you gastric about this. My mom is having another surgery in january, they are gonna open her up to see if they can find why she is having severe pain on her left side. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
nanci
