Pain Under Left Rib Cage (Page 16)

April 20th, 2011
I am a 25 year old male and I've been looking for an answer for a long time, but due to lack of health insurance this has not been very easy. I've had chest pains almost everyday for years and whenever I go to the doctor and he does an xray he usually finds me
To have bronchitis, or most recently plurisy. But after antibiotics that is now gone and the chest pains remain as usual. I usually get the pain as a sharp pain on my left side right under the rib cage (kind of where the diaphram is located) as well as getting a sharp pain when I bend forward. I also get it as a sharp pain when I first get out of bed in the morning (as I am bending foward to get up). Other than that it is usually dull throughout the day and usually only on the left side, sometimes extending to the right side (at the bottom
Of the rib cage to right under the rib cage) but is usually centralized to the left side (towards the bottom of the rib cage to right under the rib cage. I would love to get to the bottom
Of this someday cause taking aleve and advil
Everyday to try and relieve the pain is getting tiresome. Please let me know if someone has any ideas...I don't know if it's muscle tears from Weight lifting, from working or if it maybe has something to do with the stomach (as I suffer with indigestion and belching often)....this is all very frustrating and just would like to move on already.

Pain under lower left ribs.
I have pain same place and when i sleep on my stomach and if i then lift my head up and stretch i feel the spleen underneeth and it hurt, and it felt like it was a big lump, was thinking it was inflamed or something. I havent gone to doctor, as the lump underneeth seem to be smaller and smaller and less pain. I think i have had a little enlarged spleen, which isnt good. Last 5 years i have started to react to food that has wheat etc in it, whatever is in bread. I still eat bread silly me, its too good to stop eating it. Ehe.
After i have this im concidering maybe end my bread eating, and get fiber etc from other sources which my body can handle. You should check if you are allergic or intolerant to food products too. When the lump inside was at its biggest i thought my last time had come. Im glad its going better noe, and soon hopefully completly gone. I hope all of you get well too.
Peace out! and sorry for my bad english.

My 5 years of dealing with this
I think most of you have stomach pain. I don't know if it's ulcer related but I take alot of meds and I have had to deal with it for years. Here are some tips

1. Make sure you have a full stomach
2. Take Zantac or prilosec due to all my meds, I take prilosec twice a day. When I run out I the pain comes back rights away and is bad, that's when I realize I'm out
3. Pepto the ojne that coats is a good one to have handy.
4. If this doesn't help see dr. Get a script for clidiniam caps. Is an anti spasmatic / also taken for anxiety. You get over the drowsiness quickly. But, it. Will stop an acute flair up along with earlier numbered tips.
5. You can try applying heat or ice to the area. When I had them for something else, the prescription patch they use for shingles. Ou t that on the spot it can help.
6 try drinking several glasses of ice water. If it is a spasm the iced water will help to slow it down.
7. When none of tht works, give me a call cause I'm probably up because I'm in too much pain under my rib to sleep
8. If persits see a dr about ulcers. Try nexium
9. Also try digestive enzymes like papaya extract in chewable form.

Good luck.

Lower Left Rib Pain
yea, i have had this same problem for some time now.... its good to see some feedback on the topic. it usually hurts me most when im sitting down upright and bending over it hurts more. To me it feels like a bottom rib poking into my muscle and hurting it... I don't know. Im so afraid of doctors and I get huge anxiety even thinking about going to one, or even reading this! I have had a problem pop up twice over the past year and a half with my eye... something called Vitritus. It was an un explained Inflamation inside my blood vessels in my eye and they said it could of been caused by inflamation somewhere else in my body. They did a whole bunch of bloodwork and tests and could not find anything. this"costochondritis" seems like a logical answer.... interesting

My first symptom of Anklyosing Spondylitis (arthritis that affects the spine instead of the peripheral joints) was severe rib pain, followed months later by back pain and achilles tendon pain. I have also heard that rib pain can be caused by fibromyalgia.

Left Hand Pain Under Ribs for 7 Years!
Hi, I have had pain deep under my left rib cage, similar to somebody poking fingers deep under them. I found the pain was debilitating and I had to lay down to get any relief, sometimes elevating my feet for 30 minutes or so. I have undergone small bowel x-rays, colonoscopy, swallowing a small camera pill and recording it's transit through my body and I have still not received a diagnosis. I have suffered for around 7 years now and find it can be stress related, but sometimes comes on when leaning to work over a bench. One x-ray showed a narrowing bowel, but I have never been told what this may mean, nor has my hospital given a correct diagnsosis. I am under a new Doctor and am booked in for yet another colonoscopy next week (oh the joy).

I am sure there are a number of reasons this pain can trouble us, but it would be nice to have it correctly diagnosed, so we could get on with our life.

Re: severe acid production and pain under left rib cage.
I did try a Chinese Herbalist some years ago and found much relief, sadly I cannot afford to pay for this treatment again, so am in the hands of the medical professionals in England. Where I live, this pain is called the Devils Grip!

I too am suffering from pain under left ribcage. I am on 60mg 2 times a day and Carafate 4 times a day for severe acid production. I have a hitial hernia, gastritis, erosion throughout the digestive tract. This is consuming my life and there are days I can barley move. I'm 47 and ready to just give up on life all together. This has gotten so much worse since the removal of my gallbladder. The Medical doctors are not sure what to do, he says next we check the pancress then a hitial hernia repair. Though he says we don't want to go there we may not have a choice. I'm tired and just to weak to hurt and suffer anymore. I know I am grasping but now I spend hours in the health food store. I've been on aloe, mastic gum, DGL, probiotics and many more that I can't even remember. I am desperate and so tired and depleted after losing 25 pounds in 4 months. {Didn't need to lose any weight} I just have to ask, has anyone tried anything for the acid that seems to trigger all this misery that has worked? I have just purchased something called Digestacure it is very expensive. Has anyone tried it or anything else that might work for me. Quailty of life feels like it has ended for me, I just can't live like this anymore. Thank you for any help or advice, you may very well be saving a life.

Left pain under rib cage.
I have had this pain since 2001 and it comes and goes. I have had every test done on all the organs and nothing. I have found it to be when I have eaten greasy foods and or bread products the day or night before. Fast food will do me in. When I eliminated bread product processed food and dairy it appears to go away, however if I have constipation it will flare. Losing weight exercise and eating right has helped. I believe we are talking two distinct differences here some individuals are discussing muscle pain others are discussing abdominal and intestinal pain. The only sure way is process of elimination UNDER A DOCTORS SUPERVISION IF YOU ARE SEEKING MEDICAL ADCVISE HERE IT IS A SERIOUS MISTAKE. Greatfor suggestions but be wise and do not believe everything you read here. Just saying. I made a point to change my diet and lifestyle no alcohol, no grease, no bread and no dariy one week and see if your pain subsides mine did but i do get flare ups when I indulge. Usually in the moring after my coffe after a day of not eating right. good luck!!

Left Rib Cage Pain
I too have suffered with stabbing pain under the left rib cage for years. I had an ultra sound that showed a sluggish gallbladder. I had an MRI with contrast that showed an elongated colon and severe impaction. I looked at the scan and the intestine was really high on the left side.

The doctors said it had nothing to do with the pain, but I found a doctor that really listened to me. He said the tenderness, pain and the actual popping of the left rib cage was due to the tendon attached to the intestine and the rib was being pulled out by the impaction.

I also had an upper GI scope done and found that I have ulcers which causes a great deal of pain when they act up. Prevacid, Zantac type medications help with the burning. But you really have to careful with these types of meds because they strip your bones of calcium. I've found that Milk of Magnesia works to calm the stomach burn and helps relieve the severe constipation I have struggled with my entire life.

I have also found that vinegar really helps with my nausea and burning stomach and somehow it seems to help with the constipation too. I don't drink it but I do eat dill pickles and crackers with a glass of milk.

I hope this helps someone...It took me years to find out what was causing the stabbing pain that sometimes took my breath away.

All, ditto for me though the pain is dull and comes and goes. After many years and many doctors and some of the other symptoms as well, I finally went to an endocrinologist. After more detailed bloodwork and stool tests (most tests are general; these tests were detailed), the following result: fatty liver disease (thought I'm not overweight), nonalcoholic steatohepatitis [NASH]; related to malfunctioning pancreas [endocrin pancreatic insufficiency--the pancreas can cause stomach or back pain under ribs, and depending on the degree of inflammation be major or a dull ache]. I was put on major prescription digestive aids to compensate for what the pancreas was not producing. The liver, gallbladder, pancreas and spleen all function somewhat together and frequently if one is 'sick' another one of those organs is too. What you can do for yourself--no alcohol and low-fat, low fiber diet. Check internet for: pancreas, stetorhheah (sp?), NASH, fatty liver, spleen. All malfunction of these organs can have relative discolored stools, constipation, diarreah, etc. It's too easy for doctors to blow you off with muscle pain or mood problems. Find a doctor who doesn't look at the forest but digs down into the weeds. Alcohol is very bad for the pancreas, liver, gallbladder AND spleen. Good luck!

Upper left abdominal pain
I have same kind of pain, wakes me up at night, digestion problems. I finally got my diagnosis today. I have an acute H.Pylori infection. It's not as scary as it sounds unless you leave it untreated. It causes inflamation of your GI tract and can lead to ulcers and, in a small number of cases, cancer. It can be diagnosed through blood, breath or stool sample tests.

Lower left back pain under rib cage on the left side!
Hello Everyone. I am a 49 year old male. And i have had this similar dull aching pain for a couple years now. I just want to make sure my pain is the same pain as lots of the others on here. I think most of these post kind of veer towards the front of the rib cage. Mine is lower left back area. Just at or below the last rib. Feels like a knot or something is in there but you cant feel anything with your hand when you rub the area. Also mine feels like its closer to the outside rather than deep in the body. Dull aching annoying pain. No stabbing or anything but you can at times feel it throbbing. normally its more noticable sitting although sometime you can tell it is there when you lay down in certain positions. Rarely is it noticable standing or moving. Anyways. This is the way mine feels. Could it be the spleen? Like I said. I have dealt with this off and on for over two years now.. it tends to come and go.. but has managed to linger consistently now for a few weeks straight...does anyone also experience any type of fatigue and tiredness when the aches occur? I just wondering if I am the only one. It really gets on your nervous after awhile!!

Thanks for reading

Pain on the left side by the ribs
I also have left pain, by the ribs. I cant tell if its the bone itself, the muscle or an organ. My doctors have done a CT, colonoscopy, endoscopy and the nothing. The only thing they found was gallbladder stones, but I dont know the pain is related to this. To be sure I talked to my surgeon and he didnt recommend removing my gall bladder; which I dont either. My pain started almost a year ago, it comes and goes, but lately its constant. While the pain is dull, I can feel when I sleep on my left side and when I sit for a long time. Yesterday, I was at the gym and I was going some abs, I felt something stretch and hurt, not bad but I stopped. I will be seeing a doctor that deals with pain, thats the last doctor I will see before I find a second round of opinions. So far, I have seen my primary physician, a GI and a surgeon, and now they have sent me to a pain doctor; whatever that means.

Pain under left side ribcage...after throwing up or coughing
I just went to the hospital for pain under my left side ribcage. Had a sore ribs for about 2 weeks, woke up this morning with lots of gas and terrible indigestion.(Too much Pizza and vodka last night) Threw up violently and felt like something popped. I thought I ruptured something or caused a hernia. After 7 hours of tests and terrible pain, I was just released with "Abdominal Pain"....yup that was the diagnosis. Apparently, the wretching this morning tore or ripped either my ribcage muscles or my stomach muscles...not fun, i'm scared to cough or use the bathroom as these actions cause terrible sharp pain. If a CAT scan shows nothing it's probably in the muscles and the only cure is rest, and combo with pain killers. I really hope this helps someone out, I was extremely scared this morning and had no answers and no idea what was wrong with me.
