Left side pain just below ribs
Below the rib cage is all muscle.
Which can tear easily from a cough or a sneeze for adults over the age of 35.

If your pain is lower down on the left. It may be an infection. Otherwise, right below your rib cage it is most likely a torn muscle. Which can take 3 - 5 weeks, or longer to heal.

I know this post is old but I thought I would reply to see if anyone had anymore insight.
My problem started a few months ago. I was drinking a soda and I thought I took too large of a sip because it started to burn going down. Then I got this intense sharp pain over the entire left side of my torso. The pain was so bad, I almost passed out. And I''ve gone through 31 hours of labor. Labor didn''t touch this pain. It felt electric. I can''t describe it. Then I started to notice my left rib cage, on my back, I started getting this sensation or awareness that something was there. Like a mass or lump. I can''t feel the lump or mass, but like i said it''s more like an awareness that something solid is in there. Or at least that''s how it feels. I would mostly notice it when lying on my left side, like when I''m on the floor playing with my son. Not so much in bed because the bed is soft and it cushions my side. I also noticed when I would lie on my right side, and my son would crawl to me and pull himself up on me, when he touched that area of my ribs, it was tender. I wouldn''t call it painful, but it was uncomfortable enough for me to move his hand off my side. Now for the past few days, I''ve started to get some pain in that same area and it radiates to the front and sometimes up into my shoulder blade. I really have no other symptoms. I''ve always had IBS so odd stomach issues are not unusual for me. But this is something different that I''ve never felt before. It doesn''t feel like a stomach problem and it doesn''t feel like my lungs.
Also recently when I eat something cold I get pain in the spot on my back where I''ve been experiencing these sensations. It''s like a brain freeze in my back. It feels like when you run and get a "stitch in your side", like a Charlie horse.
Any ideas? The cold food thing really baffles me.

For about 2 years, after i had my gallbladder removed, I started getting a dull ache under my left breast, behind the rib cage that sometimes seems to radiate toward the centre where the stomach is. Ive been to several forums and quite a number of people were diagnosed of having an ulcer. Im planning on making an appointment with a new doctor once i move interstate in about a month's time to see if this can be all sorted. When i do activity, like walking which isnt a stenuous activity, i get the pain that sometimes feels like a tightening pain, or like a cramp. Its like someone is squeezing your organs. Sometimes it lasts for only a few minutes.. and other times it can be on and off for a few hours then may not be experienced for a week.. and then its back again. Ive asked TWO doctors about the pain but neither one seems concerned. Ive asked that i want an ultrasound. Neither gave me a referral. ONE doctor said it could be polycystic ovarian related because i have Polycycstic Ovarian Syndrome. But i dont think its that. I have cysts on both ovaries and this pain is always on the left side, almost always in that exact same spot. Its like i have something inside there that really shouldnt be there. Im guessing its an ulcer. I also been suffering with IBS irritable Bowel Sydrome for about 4 years. I cant really go anywhere without me dreading whether i can get to a toilet on time or not. It could be related to that. I had my stools checked and they found nothing abnormal. I thought it might be heart related. Had that checked last year even AFTER these pains started. I have a lot of heartburn, especially in the past 6 months. They get so bad sometimes it makes me almost want to vomit.

Naturopathic help
Naturopathic medicine has worked wonders with problems like the one slisted here. Check out "Eating Alive" by Dr Jonn Matsen ND for instance, a book that tells us what we've done to our innards and how to start to fix it. We're overloaded with toxins and killing our good bugs everyday with the things that go inside us. You'll be amazed at the difference once you've rid your tummy and and other organs of the yeasts and other baddies that exist in the acid environments we've created inside all of us. Get on it!

Hi. I have been having this same type of pain. Dull ache right under my ribcage on the left side. Sometimes it hurts when I breath in...move...etc. It's not a really sharp pain, but sort of a dull ache. I am also tired a lot and fatigue very easily. Sometimes I have to stop walking because my legs ache that badly with fatigue. Same in the shower, I have to stop what I am doing because I am just so fatigued I ache all over. I only get about 5 hours of sleep a night...sometimes a little less due to broken sleep. Not sure if the fatigue is from sleep deprivation. Anyway...the pain in my left side scares me because I feel like I have a pancreatic problem (like God forbid Cancer). I went for an abdominal sonogram yesterday and am waiting for the results. Curiously enough...today I have a red itchy rash on my right side under my ribcage down to my waist. Could this be from the sonogram? I am really worried about it. Where did it come from? Any advice would be appreciated. I am freaking myself out here. Thanks.

left side pain
I don't know what my problem is but I have never felt anything like this before. I was laying down and my pain started faint and in my left front of my side below my ribs. After about 15 mins it consumed my back and down threw my groin. It started throbbing and I couldn't breath. It is starting to pass but I was just wondering if it is something I ate or if it might be worse.

Rattling under left rib
I started having this "rattling feeling" under my left rib. it feels almost as if it were a deep mucus build up in my lungs but there is no way to cough it up. this "rattling" and dull pain comes and goes, there one day and gone the next. I feel this "ratteling" not only when I breath but also if I move a certain way like if I twist to my right. I hope someone has an answer for me.

After reading the e-mails I too have this pain. It is on the left side and I must actually hold my ribs..the pains are very sharp and once they start it will last for days. I am always holding and rubbing my rib. I had to look this up and I see that I am not alone. I have had 9 back and neck operations and hesitate about seeing another doctor. It's always the same thing...you tell them what you want...they tell you what they will do. It appears that you are just another number to them. Then after the tests, another 2-3 week wait for a follow up visit. I find it funny that there are no real doctors like back in the day. You can only go to doctors who have a specialty. Just a little bit out of their area and they send you to another specialist. I say, what is their specialty...sending you to another specialist?

I also had pain under my left rib cage. It was really bad at night time when I tried to sleep. Lying down gave me a horrible burning senstation all over the left side. It seemed that it could have started in the upper lung to the kidney. It felt like something was pushing my rib cage out. I had to try to sleep sitting up for about 6 days. I tried to explain this horrible pain to my doctor and that it only happened when I tried to lay down and he had no idea why this should happen. He ordered 2 CAT scans, one of the stomach and one of the lungs. They came out negative. There were no growths, the stomach was find, there were no blockages in the intestines, nothing.. The only other suggestion that he had was that it was musculoskeletal. I thought he was crazy and that for all that pain, there was something extremely wrong. I made an appointment with my chiropractor the next day and after a 2 second examination she said that I had a rib out of place. She did her thing and now I am pain free! I couldn't believe that it could have been that easy. I don't know if this will help anyone with the same symptoms but sometimes things aren't as bad as they seem.

The pain i feel comes only every now and again; it's not constant. A friend of mine said that when she had a pain below her right rib, her appendix was removed, but that cannot be related to the left rib as your appendix is on your right....

I have the same pains under my rib cage. I get them mostly when i walk alot, stand too long, run, and sometimes i just get them randomly. They range from moderate to so bad that i hold my breath because it hurt entirely too bad to try and inhale. My dad had these pains when he was young. Also i have had x-rays, ultasounds, and physical exams but my doctors can not seem to figure out what they are. Does anyone know?

Pain Under Left Rib
I had the same symptoms as everyone else that has posted on this thread and after 18 months and many tests and referrals, a Rib specialist in the Pysical Therapy Department told me that 2 of my ribs were flexing incorrectly and putting pressure on my lung, spleen and kidney. Of course my heart eventually was affected after 18 months as well as my spine alignment, shoulder, neck, and Blood pressure. The relief was immediate. I can breathe fully again without pressure and pain. He aligned my ribs and the spine where they connect, and next week he will align my shoulder and neck. I was very sore even though the Dr. barely did anything, that's why he just did the 2 alignments and scheduled the other 2 for a week later. Compensating for this pain for a year and a half, my body will take some time to recover.
