Hi All,
For those who have the left-side pain below the ribs, and who have had the tests (colonoscopy, u/s scan, CT scan, MRI scan, Barium Swallow etc) showing negative results, it is a possibility you may have Splenic Flexure Syndrome.
There are no tests to diagnose this condition, nothing would be seen on a scan or x-ray. It can only be diagnosed clinically, on the basis of symptoms.
It is a condition where gas gets trapped in the
Splenic Flexure (the bend) of the colon, sometimes causing the colon to bulge outwards. This causes pressure, soreness and pain, which can be either intermittent, or constant, or sometimes worse than others.
Other typical symptoms are muscle spasms moving up the chest and back, shortness of breath, nausea, swollen joints...
I have just been diagnosed with the condition after
4 years of investigations!!
One of the causes (applicable in my case) is a difficulty in digesting carbohydrates. Carbs that are not fully digested, though lack of enough of the right enzymes, cause large amounts of gas in the bowel. The colon of some people can be sensitive to this and and can go into spasm, trapping the gas in the process.
In some people Splenic Flexure Syndrome is linked with constipation, though this is not true in my case, as I have neither constipation or diarrhea.
I have just started a low carb diet, and am also taking digestive enzyme supplements. After less than a week on this new routine I am already seeing a reduction in pain levels and a gradual improvement in my other symptoms.
