(mucus is an indication of when you are ovulating, thus when you are most fertile. No mucus, no moist, not really fertile. Do not take this as a guideline thou, every woman is different and that is just how my body is.)

so are u saying then that a lot of musuc and moisture would mean that ur ovulating then?

Well, you can't say it quite as simple as that.
Let's see;
your cycle starts with the 1st. Day of your period. When your period is over, you start building up mucus, which changes in consistency throughout the cycle. It starts with opaque, white creamy mucus and gets clearer, stretchier and tackier towards ovulation. When your mucus streches up to an inch or more and is clear, you are very likely to be ovulating that day. After ovulation you "dry up" and get almost completely dry right before your period begins again.
In terms of fertility:
the tackier, clearer and especially strtechier the mucus is, the more fertile is this particular time of your cycle. With other words - you are not as fertile when your mucus is creamy, opaque and not stretchy. Hence, the most fertile time in a womans cycle is right around ovulation (give some extra days, just to be sure), the least right after and right before your period. Its like three phases (actually 4 phases if menstruation is counted as a phase also): menstruation - preovulation - ovulation (plus some days, depending on the lenght of your cycle) - postovulation - right back to menstruation...
Check "the art of natural family planning" written by john and sheila kippley, this book is very good and informative wether you are ttc, breastfeeding, trying to prevent pregnancy, etc.

Best,
estee
