I have a persistent cough that has been
hanging around for a month. I don't have
pertusis or asthma(already have been
checked). My cough is so bad almost every
time I cough I loose my cookies. Please
help- the doc says its just a bad virus
any pointers to help get rid of it?

Have you found anything more about your
cough? I have three members of my family
and several friends that have a very bad,
very persistent cough. One has had it
since a brief bout of flu-like symptoms in
nov., one since december, and two since
january. The runny nose and other
symptoms disappeared within two weeks, but
they've been left with a persistent cough
that they say is like no other cough
they've ever experienced. At onset, my
husband actually passed out once or twice
from it.
They are still coughing up mucus and it's
been months and no one seems to know what
it is. Are you getting any help with
yours and does it sound like the same
thing? Anyone else?

Hi I also have had a persistent cough for
about 7 week's. I have had a course of
amoxycillan to no avail and had a chest
x-ray that came back clear.
The cough gets so bad at times it makes me
vomit and I get a pain in my right side.
My doctor has refered me to a chest
specialist as he has no idea what is wrong
with me.
I was hoping somebody might be able to
tell me what can help me boost my immune
system so I can fight it as I can't shake
it off?

Hello! I'm sorry to hear about your
cough. If everything is ruled out until
the doctor's tell you that it is "just a
virus" then I don't have good news for
you. My otherwise perfectly healthy
18-year-old took four months to get over
this evil, vicious cough with the same
symptoms you describe. My healthy
3-year-old took five months, but not
before finally developing pneumonia which
immediately made the cough worse, to the
point where I insisted on a chest xray
(since the doctor had already determined
this was only viral he wasn't concerned
when the cough worsened) and we gave her
one more dose of antibiotics for the
pneumonia which finally cleared up
everything! My husband, the smoker, took
all of six months before his cough cleared
up. I have not been back in touch with
the people outside of my family who had
this same coughing virus, so I don't know
when theirs cleared up, but they had been
in that four-month range the last time I
spoke with them. Good luck and I hope
yours is something treatable. The only
good thing I can offer about the virus is
that it (as all viruses do) eventually
clears up and goes away.

Hi and thanks for your reply elvalena.
I am a non smoker and this thing is doing
my head in. I can't help but feel it is
more than a virus. I can't walk 20 yards
without shortness of breath and I am not
asthmatic.
It is affecting my sleep my appettite and
just getting me down. I suppose I will
just have to wait to see the specialist
for them not to be able to find anything
:(
thanks again for your response ;)

my wife, myself & our 13 month old son
have all had it - plus a few friends, none
of us has completely shaken it off after
about 10 weeks. The little one had
pertussis - like whooping, but we had no
joy with the doctors, & went to a
homeopath who managed to dramatically
reduce his coughing fits in 6 days. . . We
live just outside london in herts, I'm
wondering if this is an international
thing, or mainly UK wide?

I get a persistent cough virtually every
time I get the flu. My doctor gives me
Tylenol 3. He has me take half a tablet
and crush it into a fine powder, mix it
with water, and then gargle with it. I
usually do this for several days to a week
and the cough clears up completely. This
procedure seems to keep your throat
'quiet' long enough for it to heal. I
actually went to the dentist during a bout
with the cough, and the Tylenol 3 kept my
throat calm through the whole procedure!
