Hi, I recently had a urinary tract infection and was given antibiotic (augmentin) for it. I became or was pregnant while taking this medication. Would anyone know if there is a potential risk involved. Being I have not chosen a gyn doctor as of yet (waiting to get coverage) I thought that some one may know something about this subject.

Thank you

Leary
Hi, I was always leary about taking any sorts of medicine especially while pregnant I always used herbs those that were safe to use during pregnancy. But there are certain herbs that are used for certain conditions and not This link has been removed are even safe to use during pregnancy. If you are interested in alternative ways of healing the body you can contact an herbalist in your area by checking your phone book. I pray all the best to you. I had 8 children all naturally I only use herbs when needed along with liquid whole food supplements. Feel free to e-mail me if you want.

I work in teh ob/gyn department at a major area hospital and our rule of thunb to all patients is that they really shouldn't take any medicines at all prior to the 13th week of pregnancy. How long were you on the antibiotic for?

When you are not pregnant medicine is safe for you. A baby cannot take the same medications as an adult and therefore a pregnant woman cannot take it as the baby would be taking it too.

My opinion is different. I believe that the body is a self contained organism, has everything it will ever need, god givin, and does not require medicine from the doctor. If medicine, in your opinion is so safe, why is medical mistakes now the leading cause of death in the us? Over precribing, wrong prescription, among other things happened to beat out heart attacks, and cancer.

Medicine And Pregnancy
I will add my two cents to this subject. It is very wise to work with a top notch health professional (doctor) when messing around with medicines. I had a terrific team to work with--my psychiatrist, obgyn, and primary care md. I was terribly worried about taking medications while pregnant. I am bipolar and had to take something or else "i" would not make it. My baby girl is just fine. The stuff and quantity I took was safe for the baby. Thank goodness for that!

This is a question for your ob/gyn,when you get one. Were you late for your period when you had uti?If you were, doc should have ran pg test. You could ask the doc that presribed the antibiotic for you,she/he should know .I know that you did not know that you were pregnant at the time,so don't beat yourself up too bad. Many women know that they are pregnant and do far worse things than antibiotics and have healthy babies.Get your info first, then see what happens.Best to you and baby!Patty

There is a few reasons not to worry. One being that Augmentin is prescribed to pregnant women, and it is also prescribed to baby's, i recentally had to take it for a ear infection. When your pregnant your immune system isn't as good. That and women usually don't find out there pregnant until 4-6 weeks in, sometimes longer, and generally that early on doing something like taking anti-biotic isn't gonna have any effect. I was freaking out because i had took nightquil and Excedrin p.m, both which are big no no's while pregnant before i found out because i had the flu, and my doctor assured me not to worry, and everything was fine. But just like others have posted, it is best to avoid taking anything unless it is very very necessary, and your doctor give you an o.k. When you do to to see a doctor they will give you a list of medication that you can take.

Even if you are seeing a regular doctor, he should have a prescription medicine guide that lists the safety of the medications for pregnancy. Every doctor should assume that a woman could be pregnant when prescribing medicine.

If you want a good natural remedy for a UTI, just drink lot of cranberry juice and it should clear up pretty quickly. (Of course, the kind that is unsweetened, or you could just take it in capsules.)
