Q: 2 herinated discs pinching nerves to my legs

I am a 20 year old female with two herniated discs which are pinching nerves to my legs. I have been seeing a bone doctor and he has referred me to surgery to have a discectomy preformed. It was supposed to be immediate surgery but my workmans comp. Insurance decieded to reject my surgery request, so now I am waiting for my day in court. I have been having very severe pain in my mid back down into my legs. I can't get my doctor to prescribe me any pain meds or than anti inflammatorys. It is so bad on certain days that it feels like waves of pain shooting into my legs and mid back where I can't even walk. I have not had a second opinion. I have a few questions;1. What type of doctor should do a discectomy to relieve my pinched nerves? 2. Will the discectomy relieve my pain? 3. Is there any other methods to help with the pain until I can get surgery?

Is workers comp the only answer? You can't file it through your regular insurance where you pay a copay or percentage of the surger?

My husband had a discetomy about 7 months ago. Sounds like you need to have that operation asap before permanent damage takes place!!! My husband went to a neurologist. Ask around for a good one in your area. In most cases a discectomy will relieve the pain quick. However, my husbands was pretty bad (sounds like yours is too). It took him about 6 months before he stopped complaining. I'm sure now that he is glad he had the surgery.

Other options in the mean time are chiropractors... But your pain is so severe that I don't think I chiropractor could do any good.

I know you can get cortosone shots in your back...But that is only temporary relief.....

I would definitely go see a neurologist. They will understand how much pain you are in and should be able to prescribe proper anti-inflamatory and pain medicine until you can have the surgery done. He could probably even write a note to help with your workers comp case (as long as you don't go to a company doctor)

I couldn't file with the insurance because they said it was a work related injury and workman's comp has to pay. Also I tried getting short and long term disability and they said the same thing
i feel like sometimes I just want to cut my legs off because they hurt so bad. My doctor said I needed to have the surgery as soon as possible because I could have permenant nerve damage. The longer it takes to fix it the less of a chance I will have a full and speedy recovery and that just messes with my head because I am a 20 year old kid who can't even walk very far or anything. It's been over a year since I got hurt and now time is against me. I have just been trying to research all alternatives and procedures.

No, most of my family live in arkansas. My parents travel all over the u.S. But I am going to go to houston to get my surgery done. I was thinking on looking for a neurosugeon at the baylor hospital. Do you have any suggestions on doctors that would be good to look into. We are fixen to be moving to conroe so I will be closer to houston for my Dr. Appts.

Been to arkansas once. My grandma lived there when I was younger.

I don't know much about baylor. I would think it is a good hospital. I think conroe is still a drive to houston. My husband went to two doctors (so he could get a second opinion). Both doctors said about the same thing. One was in pasadena and the first doctor was in clear lake (surgery done at st. John's hospital across from nasa). Apparently he did a good job b/c my husband feels much better now. We also knew someone else that had a more serious operation performed by him. His name is randir p. Sinha and his office is across from clear lake regional medical center 281-332-2464. Definitely recomend getting 2 opinions.

So now I am curious how your back was injured at work?? And when is your case supposed to be over?? And your parents travel...For work or pleasure?

I have worked on pediatrics for over 2 years and on 7-11-02 I was at work taking care of one very sick 2 year old child. She was so sick she would never move while I would take her temp. Her was having such high fever that we were having to do rectal temps every hour. Almost at the end of the shift I was taking her temp....Mind you the child and the mother was on the couch and not in the crib. The mother was not a very attentive mother and she would never wake up when I would come in there. So I was squatting over the end of the couch taking her temp when she started fighting me. I had to squat for a very long time fighting the child and the mother would not help restrain the child. At that time I couldn't stop taking the temp because at that point it was a real emergency because the child had 106.2 rectal temp, and for my love for children I didn't stop and think about the position I was in. Immediatly when I stood up my back hurt bad so I wrote it up and I went to the employee health to get checked out.

I have no clue when it is supposed to be over. It should be soon. I pray anyway.

My parents travel for work. My dad is a rig welder. They go where ever the union tells him to. He make good money and they like it. I wish they would stay close to me though.

Interesting. My husband's sister works with the baby's right after they are born. And my company helps to design rig structures.

So where were you working when this happened? You would have thought they wouldn't have put up such a fight considering you worked there for two years??

So you worked pediactrics at a hospital??After your back is better, my sister-in-law and mother-in-law could be good references for clear lake regional like I was telling you about last reply. Do you have a lvn?

Could be worth the drive to take a visit to clear lake! I really like it here!!
