Hello,
this is leslie from the states. Bi-polar disorder or manic-depressive disorder is a specific mental illness and generally you are born with it. It usually"runs in families" and can present a lot of different symptoms. I was diagnosed almost 18 years ago and it does run in my family.Your mom should be diagnosed by a qualified psychiatrist and a history of behavior taken. Some of the symptoms are racing thoughts-mind never shuts off, feelings of being able to conquer anything, delusions, sometimes hearing voices, severe depression that can last for days or in my case even years. In the depression phase you may not care about anyone or anything, be tired, fatigued, feel helpless in any situation, overwhelmed by the simplest things. Feel dispair, get angry for no reason, have sudden outbursts of anger, not sleep properly, and just don't care.
Manic phase gives you a false sense of being able to do anything, have energy to burn, lack of concentration,be able to do many things at once-and not accomplish anything or do it all and then crash. Both are dangerous and must be diagnosed properly because other disorders can also fit these symptoms. Person must be on medication which takes awile to work, they do have side effects, dosage might have to be adjusted as well as the specific medication to be taken.
Hope this helps a little. Wish you the best'
sincerely leslie

Hi,
side effects can vary from person to person depending on your tolerance for the medication. Generally though most will make you sleepy or tired when you first start taking them. Some will cause nausea, or dizziness. Some can cause extreme dry mouth and make you feel unhungry. Always ask your pharmasist before taking and also long term effects of it's usage. I have developed tinnitis, goiter(on lithium), you also must have blood work done periodically to check for liver function and kidney function. The may also raise blood pressure because of the hcl in them, and some are salt based metals. Always talk and ask questions of your doctor but especially your pharmasist. They study everything about drugs and doctor's do not. Tell your doctor of any family history of above plus anything else. They are very potent drugs, just be educated on them as they do and are necessary to survive manic-depression.

Thanks
Wow, there's a lot to that...Most people tell me that they stopped taking the meds for bp because of how it made them feel...They didn't want to just 'not care' all day....Thoughts on that?

My Boyfriend
Hello, my problem is my boyfriend's mood swings, he told me that he's a bipolar and has been in hospital twice, I asked a doctor if he has to take medications or not, he told me that he prefers not to take medications, because if he restarted to take them, he won't never stop them all his life long. So what do u think? Last time my boyfriend told me that I must leave him because he's so harmfull and he may hurt me, but I replied him saying no I won't leave you, I love you. His bipolar degree starts by mania, he got many thoughts and power, then he fell in depression (he doesn't want to talk to anyone, don't eat, don't work, he wants to be alone, don't want to listen to anyone. And hurt me by his words talking abo9ut his x. And much things, telling me that he doesn't love me and he doesn't remember that he told me that he loves me. We were planning to get married, I love him so much and I don't want to leave him. But i'm so sensible person that I could fall in depression fastly.
So please i'm in need for your advices.
Many thanks

Hi Leslie
I just want to ask if the bipolar disease can be solved or not. You said that it's a mental disease, I thought it's a psycological one.
Anyway will my boyfriend be always ill byt this disease? I hope not.
Waiting for your reply.
Thank you so much.

Hello People!
I'm not sure if this is where I should be posting so, note: to mod please move this post accordingly...

Hello people,

i have a problem, I believe it to be severe, and so did my doctor. I am taking lexapro for my depression, but feel that it is not strong enough for me. I have had suicidal thoughts, but nothing ever became of that. I have other medical conditions, regarding peptic ulcers, gerd, and (bleeding)hemmroids, and now I think I might have throat cancer. My doctors says that i'm fine, but I don't feel that i'm fine at all. "what should I do"? And is it possible to apply for disabilities for my medical conditions, I am currently not working and haven't been working for the last year and a half. My old doctors said that I could go back to work but when I did I felt worse, the symtoms were worse and therefore I had to leave, I explain this to my doctor, but he does'nt seem to believe me and now my mother and my brother are taking care of me. Any help would be great and thanks for your time in reading my post... thanks...
