Q: Painful Crown

I had a 3/4 crown put on my second to last lower tooth on 11/22. When I bite down on that tooth, it now hurts (a lot). I've had a 3/4 crown done before on the tooth next to it (9 months ago), and that tooth needed an initial bite adjustment, but is now fine. I don't feel my current problem is a simple bite adjustment. Although it has only been a week, I am very concerned. For now, I am not chewing on the left side, hoping it will heal. What do you think this problem means?

It could be the same problem, your bite is slightly off.If that is the case, you know that an adjustment will quickly solve the problem. It could also be the new material.I am assuming that your 3/4 crown is gold.If it is,new gold can conduct hot/cold for several weeks and should resolve on its own.Your nerve could also be reacting to the work you had done.It may calm down in a week or so.If it does not,you may need to have a root canal done.Your first step should be to see your dentist and let her/him evaluate your bite and make any adjustments,if needed.Best of luck to you.Patty

Thanks patty. The crown is porcelain. The reason i'm thinking the pain is not due to my bite being off is because I know the feeling (from the previous crown I mentioned). I'm praying it's not a root canal case, but can you think of any other reasons for this pain? It's been 9 days now since the work was done.

Your best bet is to see your dentist. If you do need a root canal, they are not so bad.I've had 4 of them done and lived through them all!If your nerve is dying, there is nothing you can do to reverse it,just have the root canal done. You really need to see your dentist to be sure.Good luck.Patty
