My Mom Was Recently Diagnosed With Bile Duct Cancer...

Hello all,
i was wondering if anyone has more information on this type of cancer. It is a rare cancer and her doctors don't know what causes it. Does anyone have any information regarding this type of cancer or any personal experience dealing with it? I pray that someone is out there that can help. Thank you!

My dear sullen lizard

my heart aches for you both.I know what you are going through. My mum died last august aged 73.She had bile duct cancer. There is no history of cancer in our family.

One day my mum who has had gallstones since she was 30 but did not have surgery, became jaundiced. She was in very good health very active and happy. She went to see her Dr.He sent her into hospital for some tests. She was diagnosed with the disease. She had a tumor the size of a walnut we were told.It was inoperable as it was too close to blood vessels.A stint was inserted so as the bile would bypass the tumor. Her colour did come back to normal. She did not have chemo or radiotherapy. The specialist said it would not be in her best interest to.We agreed. We preferred she have as little discomfort as possible.
The prognosis was from 6mths to 2 yrs.She was diagnosed at the end of feb 04.

Mum had a lot of heartburn and the odd stomach pain. She had antacids and such. She had a moderate appetite. She had lost weight due to the often unnecessary fasting for tests. She did not regain it all but she was well. She never gave up.She was such a determined little lady. She was my rock.

She quickly began to deteriorate mid july. Her blood pressure dropped. The pains and heartburn left her.The only uncomfortable thing about it all was the buildup of bile in her system towards the end.She was not in any pain really. She was very much aware of everything that was said and even though she did not speak towards the end, her mannerisms implied that she was still very much in control of her faculties.
Dear mum went to be with the lord on aug 15th at 9.45pm.She was at home.We were all there with her.

We had not heard anything about this cancer ever before. We did not know what to expect. It was not as dreadful as I had expected. All I prayed for was that she would not suffer.I was scared of that. She had discomfort but no pain and she was very peaceful.

If the tumor had been operable then with chemo and all the available treatments they said she would easily have had 5 to 7 yrs of good health. They also said if she should have had her gallstones removed.

I hope I have not distressed you in any way.I just felt I had to reply to you as I remember being in your shoes only a few months ago and nobody had answers.

I pray you are both well. Please contact me as often as you like.If I can answer any query at all I will.

Kindest regards

Hello sullen....Just go back from visiting with my cousin at nyu hospital here in nyc. He was diagnosed with bile duct cancer last week, and much like you, my whole family including myself are sullen. My biggest mistake to date has actually been looking up research on the internet. It seems everything I have read is all gllom and doom, including the only other response to your post (which I know was well intended). My only imput on our situation is this...Keep your head up, and wish for the best. People survive!!!! I refuse to look at percentages, and think of my cousin as a percentage. I would assume that the majority of people that visit these forums are not here to tell their success stories, but rather are seeking solice in a tough time, much like myself. Anyway, I hope and pray that we will both be the exception and come back to this website to report our good news to those seeking help in the future. Be well, and be strong. Jason

Dear sullen ...

Keep your head up and pray. My mom was also diagonsed with bile duct cancer right after this past thanksgiving. All I really know is that it is a very rare cancer. No one really knows what to expect. Has your mom had surgery to remove any tumors?

Dear sullen...

My husband is 48. He was diagnosed with bile duct cancer three weeks ago. He is currently recovering from surgery to remove the tumor. The doctor has stated that he should make a full recovery. Keep the faith. I can be reached at belenatur n@aol.Com. I would be glad to answer any questions. God bless you.
