Q: Positive Ana Blood Test And Protein In Urine

I've taken two blood tests, both wielding the same result: positive ana 1:640. I have no clue if this count is too high or too low because I don't know what the normal number of anti-nuclear antibodies is.

When I went to my doctor and had a urinalysis done, I was found to have a lot of protein in my urine, which was passed off as being normal, until I saw a rheumatologist, who said that combined with a positive blood test could mean I have some kind of connective tissue disorder.

.......................................... .......

I have read that certain drugs/medications can alter the results of a blood test; when I had the tests done, I was on an antibiotic for a sinus problem, and I only wonder if it may have thrown my body's balance off enough to change my test results.

Does anyone think the antibiotics may have changed my results?

Or could I truly have something wrong with me?

Ana And Urinalysis Results
Dear scared,

it is highly unlikely that antibiotics would cause your ana to be elevated to that level. For your reference, anything over 1:80 is considered positive by most labs, although some have a lower range. Yours is definitely positive. The proteinuria could be indicative of kidney involvement -- something that is often seen in sle. Your rheumatologist may refer you to a urologist, or may decide to treat you himself. I hope that you will follow up and get the care that you need.

good luck to you!
