Rupture Disc Pressing On the Scaitia Nerve Posted: 10-19-03 12:15pm
Hi everyone,
my husband was in pain for 12 weeks and he
finally got to see the specialist this
past friday. The speciailist told him
that he had a ruptured disc and it was
pressing on the scatica nerve. But it
has healed itself and he will be prone to
this now.
My question is does my husband require
surgeryé
thanks

Hi, your husband could possibly require
surgery if other treatments don't work.
He will probably need to try seeing a
chiropractor and/or physio first.
Doctors are hesitant to operate on a back
or spinal injury before alternative
methods are tried first, and will also
depend on his age. If he is under 30
surgeons will probably insist he try all
other methods first including medication,
nerve root sleeve injections and possibly
epidural steroid injections. Even though
I personally feel this is rediculous, as
my husband has suffered a ruptured disc
pressing on the sciatica for 7 years
without any luck using all of these
methods and only now have the surgeons
started looking at the option of surgery,
he is 34. The surgery options are
limited and really will depend on where
you are as to what is available to you.
One option is a 'micro discectomy' which
is a procedure where the surgeon will
remove the small piece of disc that is
pressing on the nerve. There is a
procedure called 'titanium disc
replacement' which last time I checked was
still being tested under clinical trial in
australia, but it is worth checking in
your state as it may already be available
in the u.S. The results were excellent
and the patients the procedure was tested
on were completely pain free.
Good luck...

I am waiting for a surgery date for
operation #7 on my spine. In this day
and age surgeons will only operate as a
last resort. There are big problems that
arise after having surgery on one level of
the disc and this places stress and
pressure on the level above where the
surgery was. Do whatever and take
whatever your husband can to recover from
this and only let them operate as a very
last resort. Take it from one who knows.
I am having spinal fusions with cage
instrumentation, rods and screws just to
keep my spine together. Good luck.

He could have surgery or he wouldnt have
to. I am 22 and I just was at a
specialist and he saidf he could go in and
fix it or I could just wait it out a
couple of months and it wouild problem fix
itself so he could if he wanted to have
surgery or he could wait it out.

Surgery For Back Pain Posted: 12-05-03 12:41pm
I had a disk blow out and caused pressure
on the scatic nerve. After about 3 weeks
it got so bad that I couldn't feel my leg.
After surgery I could walk and didn't
have the pain. About 9 months later scar
tissue grew around the nerve and now i'm
in consent pain. It's been 8 years and I
still in pain. I have good days and bad
days. I have been told there isn't
anything can be done because if I have the
scar tissue remove it will return.
