Q: thinning hair

Once a hairstylist told me (when I was 20) that by the time I was 30 i'd be bald. I didn't have thinning hair so much, but the thickeness of each strand was, well...Thin.

This bugged me through out my twentys and I took her word for it that i'd be bald. Well it didn't happen. I did notice in my thirties that my hair was receding a bit and I was getting the quarter-sized patch on the back of my head but I was happy that the "witches" prophecy wasn't true.

Now I just hit 40 years and this has been the most stressful yeat of my life. My wife's father passed away, we miscarried, I took a new job, my mother's been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.
Now my hair is falling out and I was wondering if it could be truly from stress or is that an old wives tale? If it is from stress, once the stress goes away, can my hair grow back?

I'm using nioxin right now and am wondering if that is just a scam.
Anybody out there with some answers? Thanks.
