Checking In
map820,
When you had the horrible stomach problems were you given antibiotics? Did the tremors start at the same time as the stomach problems or shortly thereafter?

Re:
Hi Dr. Rob, no I wasn't given any antibiotics. They tested me for H Pylori but that was negative so they said it wasn't likely an infection of any kind and left it at that. Sometimes I wonder if I should have insisted? The tremors started the exact week the stomach problems started. I found out from my endo this week that I have a hormonal imbalance of some excess androgens which shocked me. I dont have any physical male characteristics - excess hair , hair loss, etc and my periods are normal so I don't think this is related but I don't know what to think anymore.

More questions...
Hi map820,
Some more questions: What exactly were your symptoms during the stomach trouble? Describe all the symptoms are you having now (even unrelated ones) including the tremors. Did anything else precede the stomach problems such as a stressful event in your life, the memory of something unusually painful, other physical symptoms (even small ones) , a major or minor change of some sort in your life, do you have a past history of other ailments, even minor ones? Also, was it only your stomach, or was it also your intestines? Do you now, or have ever had problems with yeast infections? I apologise for so many questions but I'm trying to get an accurate overview of your medical history.

I SHAKE TOO
Can't believe I found this forum. I feel I am suffering the same problem.

I am a 26 year old male. I have no other problems as far as I know.

MY PROBLEM

This has been going on for about 6 months now.
I shake mildly throughout the day and it feels like it's coming from inside me. Although this shaking is almost unnoticable to anyone but me.
I sometimes shake moderately before sleep, but this has gotten less lately.
The main shaking is approx 3-10 seconds after waking, while I am still in the dreamlike state between sleeping and waking. Yet I am aware of what's happening. So basically when I wake up I am shaking for about a minute quite strongly. It seems like my upper body; shoulders Torso and head are doing the most shaking. As I begin to arrive in a full wakening state the shaking becomes less, then i lie on my bed for about 5 mins waking up properly and the shake fades to moderate.
Once I get up and go to the shower the shaking either stops completely or reverts to a very mild shake.

DEPRESSION/ANXIETY

I don't feel depressed or stressed in particular, although we all have stresses and strains in our daily lives and we are not sure how they affect us subconciously, so I cannot rule this out completely. I did have a berevement recently but this started mildly before that event and has gotten worse since. Yet I cannot say that it would not have gotten worse anyway.

DRUGS

I do not take any prescribed medication.
I do smoke Cannabis however. Most doctors would probably put this down to Cannabis (don't ever tell a doctor you smoke cannabis or they will piously and knowingly put everything from the common cold to a brain tumor down to it and never take you seriously again), but I am 90 per cent certain it is not related since this condition began at a time in my life when I was smoking no cannabis and living a healthy lifestyle, going to the gym twice a day and getting plenty of air and activity.
I use no other illegal drugs except cannabis. Yet I have in the past. Although not for around 10 years.
I did smoke cigarettes but I have recently stopped (3 days now) in an attempt to see if this helps. I think the shaking got worse since I stopped smoking actually. And again this condition began when I was a none smoker so I find it hard to see a correlation.
Caffine; I used to drink about 12 cups of sugary tea a day, I am a record producer and when I make records I drink a lot of tea. But I stopped drinking so much tea and now drink 1-2 cups of coffee on a morning and nothing at night. I am considering cutting this out completely. Since I stopped drinking so much tea the shaking has gotten worse rather than better if anything. And anyway doctors seem to say anything under 5 cups a day is perfectly fine.

DIET

I often don't have time to eat as often as I should. Sometimes I would have nothing but the cups of tea all day and a main meal on a night. This would explain the shaking during the day I guess but then why would the shaking be more prevalent at night when I have HAD a decent meal. Anyway I am regulating my meals better and eating more fruit, will see how it goes.

ELECTRICITY/MENTAL SHOCKS/JERKING

I occassionally get a kind of shocking. It feels like the shock you get if someone crept up behind you and burst a balloon. But it happens sometimes 30 times a night when people make noises that shouldn't shock, like turning on a tap or gently closing a door, it's wierd. This happens more often in evening time when I am getting tired or feeling my eyes drooping with tiredness. Occassionally I get bodily jerks, just little spasms. and sometimes i get big spasms, it can feel like someone stuck a knife in my lung for like a millisecond and just when I think OMG! WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT. I think 'eh I'm Fine'.
Not sure if this is the same as the electricity thing someone spoke of but thought it was worth mentioning.

CATS
It's strange that the majority of people with this condition seem to have a cat. I too have a cat and I know exactly what you mean when you said you thought the cat was on the bed, because thats how this condition began in me too! But I never thought my cat was on the bed, because I don't let my cat in my bedroom and you shouldn't too or the cat begins to elevate it's natural god complex to epic proportion and will think the room belongs to it.
Anyway sounds crazy but I wonder if this could somehow be an allergic reaction to cats, it's highly unlikely but since cat has been mentioned SO many times in this thread it is worth at least glancing at this possibility.

NOISE

I have often speculated this MAY be noise related, as a record producer I understand there are certain frequencies which can affect both mind and body. For example in music production we will cut certain frequencies from sound to make sound more pleasant. Low frequency (below 30 HZ) is particulary damaging to the mind and body. If you do not cut 30 HZ and below from a record, when played at loud volume through a club soundsystem it can cause anxiety, nausea and a whole host of other symptoms. The Nazi's experimented with sound guns that killed many researchers in the 1940's and even today the US military has sonic weapons research programs. Often many things from poltergeists to mass suicides to spiritual healing have been explained by the presence of low frequency or other frequency noise.
I have a fish tank in my room and the damn thing hums like crazy. I am thinking of removing it, that humming all night may be at the bottom of this.
Just interested if you can ask yourself if while you are asleep do you have humming equipment near you? perhaps you have a fridge in your room? perhaps your apartment building has an air con system and you can hear or feel the fan at night? maybe you leave your computer on all night?
If something oscillates and you listen to it for long periods of time it can cause mental problems.
Also as an audio engineer i listen to alot of loud, often banging music through headphones and speakers, we know problems in the ear, and ear fatigue can often manifest in strange ways. Do you abuse your IPOD? Do you play in a band? Do you work in an airport? do you go clubbing too much? Do you experience any tinnitus (ringing in the ears)?

ASTRAL PROJECTION

Oddly this should be mentioned. I am no hippy or new age junkie but I remember becoming interested in astral projection and I would attempt to leave my body on a night for about a month. Then this one time I actually did astral project. I left my body jumped through the glass of my bedroom window walked back through my front door then entered my kitchen and floated back upstairs where I reentered my body. Now this may sound crazy to you (if you knew me you would know I am no crackpot and very down to earth) but this actually DID happen. However I am almost certain what really happened was I tried so hard to astral project that I put my body in a trance like state and/or induced a lucid dream of some sort where my mind created the experience for me. It certainly felt dreamlike but was an incredibly vivid dream.
Anyway, whether you belive in this stuff or not, my point is that it was only after the projection experience that these things started happening to me (i'm serious).
So whether or not I awakened/altered some portion of my brain by trying to astral project I don't know but I have not tried to repeat the experience.

PARKINSONS

I am not convinced it's Parkinsons and would hope not. Hardly anyone here seems to have been told parkinsons by their doctors and I think doctors are pretty good at recognizing parkinsons. My doctor did not even mention Parkinsons, so I think Parkinsons has a specific set of symptoms doctors are used to. so, not to worry to much on that, although obviously it's not worth ruling out completely.

EPILEPSY

I suffered from some form of mild epilepsy as a child (11 years old i think). I had 2 or 3 epileptic fits and the doctor told us that my brain produces too much electricity on one side. They gave me a choice - take meds and it will stop but you will have to take meds all your life, or, refuse the meds and hope that it goes away. I refused the meds (you should refuse brain meds in most cases folks from my experience unless you cannot actually function without them) and I never had another fit.
I wonder if somehow this condition is my epilepsy returning or my messed up brain producing too much lekky again. Who knows? But like I said I have never had a fit since. I am convinced the original cause of my fitting was a tube strip light i had in my room that i sometimes left on all night. Well, after the fitting we had it took out and the fits stopped. (these lights generate timed pulses and electrical hum which could be comparable with other frequency hum I spoke of earlier, be carefull of strip lights or any light that oscillates).

COMPUTERS

Some people can be sensetive to computers, again, this goes back to frequency. Personally I use computers all day every day. Perhaps this is also at the root of it. I am unsure. Do you guys excessivly use computers? I know everyone does these days, but do you genuinely feel your on the commy too much?

HEART

For a while I figured my heart was causeing the shaking, my heart seems to beat much more strongly that it used to. Not more quickly or anything, just more strongly. I figured the tremor was a result of this but I am no longer convinced, thoughts?

APNEA ESQUE

My mother suffers from sleep apnea, not sure it's genetic. I have had apnea esque symptoms. Sometimes waking up with a start and a deep breath. Sometimes feeling like I'm falling in my sleep then I wake up. So i don't know whats happening there.

DOCTORS

So of course I went to the doctors and they basically told me like so many of us here that there is nothing wrong with me. Well that's bull because this never happened years ago so why now?

I saw two seperate doctors, neither of which have a reputation for being particularly good.

They checked my heart rate- perfect.
They checked my blood several times for pretty much everything - perfect.
Blood pressure - A1 perfect (which is odd since they say cannabis affects blood pressure but at all times in my life doctors say I have some of the best blood pressure they have ever seen- you figure it out)
Eyes and stuff- No sign of brain pressure or indication of brain tumour, my optitian says the same.

So they said there was no need for further testing at this point CT and such. But I am considering going back and insisting.

There is this one doctor in our surgery called DR Russ and he is excellent, a real genius, he recently diagnosed my mother with a prolapsed uterus and she has suffered and been to doctors for years and none discovered it. Even if he thinks there is nothing wrong with you he will spend a long time explaining why exactly he thinks that and even tell you the workings of the body and how he arrived at his conclusion. This is excellent doctoring as many doctors simply say 'its normal goodbye' and leave you with a worried feeling that they either misdiagnosed you or were too busy to listen properly.
Anyway I did try to get in and see DR Russ but he is always either fully booked or on call. Since everyone now asks for DR. Russ at that place.
Anyway next time I go I will insist on DR Russ and see what he thinks.

CONCLUSION

I really don't know what this is and neither do the doctors, just wanna thank everyone who posted here, you made me feel better that this is not just me it's happening to.
If people can please be specific about their symptoms and update us with their progress with doctors etc and their own deductions perhaps we can solve this annoying and scary problem together.

Peace,

Rob

APPEND

I just noticed something DR ROB said, well I was treated for H.Pilori sometime last year with some strong substances. It kind of went away but I still feel a bit like I have stomach problems, Also I was taking antibiotics for acne before this happened then i stopped? any relation.

Shaking
Oddly enough, or not that oddly. I occassionally have the same problem. Mine occurs when I awaken abruptly out of what I assume is a deep sleep. Now whether something wakes me or the shaking wakes me, I do not know. I just know that is when it normally happens. I was just curious if I set up a forum and posted the link here if people would be willing to keep journals of everything. When and how these occur for them, what they eat, things that happen during day, trips, stresses, anything, etc. Be kind of a support group and maybe find some common things.

Hi Dr. Rob and Others
Im glad so many people are actually responding to this board. Helps my sanity! Ok, as for Dr. Robs questions:

I did get laid off about 3 weeks prior to this starting. I did not feel it was a particularly stressful event though as I had a stressful job in advertising, traveled a lot and had to leave my 3 y/o who I am now home with so it was a welcomed change. We are also ok financially. However, it was a big life change nonetheless.

I was however experiencing a lot of anxiety over some other medical things as well. My doctor thinks I may have cushings disease- as I was producing a lot of cortisol. Since I have been tested they are not sure that is it now- still testing. Doesn't look like it though. I have strange blood pressure "spikes" as my bp is usually normal or even low but will shoot up to about 130/90 or so for no reason. Same thing happens with my heart rate- usually fine but spikes on occasion.

I am prone to yeast infections. I would say I get maybe 4-5 a year.

When the stomach problems started, yes it was also intestinal. Not to get too descriptive but for many years I suffered from constipation. I was told I had IBS-C. All of the sudden however when this all started I have had the opposite problem and almost always need an anti-diarrheal now. The actual "stomach problem' was a gnawing pain in the mid and right section of my upper abdomen all of the time, along with new reflux. The did endoscopy and a hida scan for gallbladder Both negative. Also, then and now I have the tremors, fatigue (usually very energetic) weight loss (when I am eating normal and I did have thyroid tests- negative-, and dizziness, especially on standing.

Last medical condition to note is my ALT liver levels which are always on the high side (usually 65-75 when the top range for normal is 55) went up to 174 during this time. I hadn't had a drink for 2 months prior to all of this and I actually lost over 20lbs. They say its fatty liver. I am 26 yeas old and I weigh 145lbs. I know I am not "skinny" but I don't get how it spiked like that from "fatty liver" when it was never that high prior when I did drink regularly (usually wine 3-4 nights a week a glass or two) and weighed 25lbs more.

Thanks so much again for your help.

Also
Rob- thanks for posting. I do sleep near a humidifier that buzzes, but the shaking happens no matter where I am and I have woken up in a hotel and my parents house since....too bad that would have been great if that was all it was.

I DO have cats! ha

Rob this is scary- this that you posted

" shake mildly throughout the day and it feels like it's coming from inside me. Although this shaking is almost unnoticable to anyone but me.
I sometimes shake moderately before sleep, but this has gotten less lately.

Is EXACTLY what happens to me. EXACTLY. SCARY.....

Were you on Prilosec for the H Pylori or another PPI? I was on a strong dose of it when this all started for 3 weeks.

SpiritSister-

I would be happy to help jot down a journal. Let me know how we should coordinate it.

Thanks again to all!!!!

A Clue
Hi map820,

Look up information on candidiasis. Although there are several things going on in your body at once many of your symptoms point to a intestinal candida problem. Be prepared however, as conventional medical thinking dismisses this illness as unimportant or nonexistent. Although candida is part of the normal flora of our intestines, with some there is an overabundance leading to all sorts of health problems including nocturnal tremors. Unfortunately, there is a lot of different opinions on how it can be best treated but if you sort your way through the net you will get a general idea of the treatment protocals. First however, see if it's something that resonates with you. If so, let me know and I can give some advice on how to treat it.

shaking during sleep or upon waking
I have had this for a while but it has gotten worse lately, I feel like maybe it is a blood sugar issue, but I have been tested and it is not. I feel shaky and yucky, and if I stand up during it, I kind of feel sick, I found out I do have Lyme disease (from a tick) and this could be why this is happening, but not sure. By the way.. to the person that had the abnormal ct scan... you may want to be tested for lyme, because that is a symptom of it. If anyone has any other answers as to why we are having this, please write me.

much of what is being described here is simply caused by bodily fear that is generated by our passive acceptance of scary inner thoughts and dialog. by deeply relaxing and placing our attention on these thoughts, with the intention of stopping this uncontrolled stream, by concentrating on looking and listening, we can stop this barrage. it is a shocking realization to see what is going on behind the scenes in our minds. be brave, relax, stare it in the eye and stop it before it takes anything more from you.

Waking up feeling like there's an earthquake.
Lastnight, I went to bed around 12:30 AM. I was studying for a Biology test. I was comfortable in my bed, half asleep, almost sleeping. Suddenly, I feel myself shaking uncontrollably. I thought there was an earthquake because I felt my whole bed moving. It lasted about 1 minute and then it stopped. I stayed frozen in position since I was so shocked on what just happened to me. I sat up in my bed... turned on the light, only to find everything was still in place; which means no earthquake had occured. I searched this site and saw that some other people had similar symptoms. What is this shaking and why?

Shaking When Waking
I did a search on this because I've had this for the past year (since my pregnancy) and didn't know what it was. It doesn't happen every night and tends to only happen if I wake up not too long after going to sleep at night. Like if something woke me up right after I went to sleep. At first I thought it was me feeling my heartbeat and having it shake the bed, but when I checked my pulse, it felt pretty normal. I have Mitral Valve Prolapse so it wouldn't have shocked me to have my heartbeat shake the bed sometimes, but when I realized that wasn't it, I found it disturbing. Like one of the other posters, I thought maybe it was an earthquake (living in Bakersfield that could have been the explanation), but I was the only one who felt it.

I haven't been to the doctor or even really thought about going, but maybe I should just to rule out anything suspicious. I did get hit in the head with a wooden bat in the fifth grade and had a mild concussion, but never had any problems since, and I'm now 34. My dad has Parkinson's and my sister has Multiple Sclerosis so I want to rule out any neurological problems. I would appreciate anyone's advice on this matter.

Thank you.

body shaking
I have had this happening to me for the last few years. It started after being put on Stemitil for inner ear damage which was causing severe vertigo attacks. The first thing I noticed was a tremor in my finger,my doctor sent me to the neurologist who said it was essential tremor. I now have shaky hands and legs (mostly on my right side) and the whole body shaking on waking up.

When it first happened I asked my husband to stop shaking the bed. I then realised it was me. I don't know if it is from panic or not but my heart starts to beat harder. Not faster just harder and the shaking is in time with it. I can feel my heart beat all the time and the shaking is in time with it.

Has anyone else noticed that?

so
i noticed just recently during the weather changing from spring to summer i've been having trouble sleeping and feeling a little "Different"...2 nights in a row, right before i was pretty much asleep, i'll wake up and have to sit up or stand up because my body feels like it's trembling all over, i have no idea what it is exactly that's trembling in my body or why...but from reading everybodys post so many people mention something that has to do with anxiety...but how come this hasn't happenned until recently and sometimes it happens around the same time of year for me

Please check this out
i have your symptoms *and* more.

i first noticed my body doing the shaking thing only occasionally when i was a teenager over 20 years ago.

then recently (within the past 3-5 years) a type of infection started afflicting people, where everyone has some similar symptoms but also ones unique to themselves (take your pick: anxiety, fatigue, shaking, high iron levels, depression, aches/pain/tingling, mood swings, weight loss, complexion problems, stomach pain, vision problems, sensitivity to light, mucus, etc, etc).

the working theory is that an undetected stomach virus is compromising people's immune system, inflaming latent viruses in the body, causing a general feeling of sickness and fatigue. A lot of research has been done by Dr. Chia in California on this very topic: Unfortunately, myself and everyone else that has been struggling with this have not yet found the cure.

waking up shaking
I get the same thing, started to get a little freaked out so am searching the net for answers. I have epilepsy that I am happy to say after 7 years of the wrong medication is now controlled but my body tremors when I first am waking up remain.
I don't always get them but they are there. They don't feel like a seizure at all. My head feels clear. It feels like an electric shoke going through me, that makes me quake.
I get twitching (tremors) in my left pinky finger too and sometimes in my leg (during the day). I have sciolosis in my back and fibromylgia. I think my back (the cause of my fibro) some how aggrevates my nerves now and again. Clear MRI on head and back though (just shows the curve in my spin)?
Right now, my left hand is pins and needles just from trying to type????
Starting to think I am loosing my mind, there has to be some kinda test that shows why this is happening. I know my back gets "pinched" often cause I wind up at the doctors hunched over and locked up, they have to give me a shot in the butt to loosen my muscles up. I am told if I take pain pills daily I will be fine, but I refuse to be drugged. Demoral and gravol every few months is better then morfin daily. I have found people who are often cold and have poor circulation on here too. Maybe all of these together are related?? I don't know, neither do my specialists so they just treat for pain.
