I am a twenty one year old male and I
think i've been having some problems with
my gallbladder lately. Just to give you
a little background there are extensive gi
problems on my dad's side of the family
(including my dad getting his gallbladder
removed) and I also have a history of
disordered eating...I'm not overweight,
but I definetely could have been nicer to
my stomach. For about two years now i've
experienced pain on the lower right side
of my back, specifically in the middle of
the nite, specifically after
over-indulging in food. I always figured
this was some kind of gas pain, or maybe
my kidney. The real problem started the
other day when I ate a big plate of fava
beans. I knew that favas/garbanzos/etc
were hard on my digestion, but I decided
to go for it anyways...Bad decision.
Almost immediately my stomach started
hurting and this continued in to the next
day (day before yesterday). Day before
yesterday I did not eat that much, but I
did eat some cause I was hungry.
Yesterday the pain only intensified and
started to move around to the same area on
my back. Yesterday I didn't eat anything
and through talking with others came to
the conclusion that it was prolly my
gallbladder. I actually feel better
today, I think that giving my stomach a
break helped everything to calm down. I
have three questions. First of all, why
would the fava beans (i actually think
they were lupini) precipitate a
gallbladder attack. They certainly
weren't fat-free, but i've definetely
eaten fattier foods in my life.
Secondly, do I need to do something about
this? Given the sporadic nature of my
problems I definetely don't think I have a
stone...Should I go find out what my
ejection fraction is? My mom is making a
gi appt for me next month when I come back
home from school. Finally, does anyone
know any naturopathic treatment for
gallbladder problems? I am a vegetarian
who works at a health food store and am
terrified by surgery...I would just as
soon take care of this with diet and
supplementation (or eastern medicine?) I
would really appreciate any additional
information or insight y'all could give
me. Thanks for reading this.

it could very well be a bad
gallbladder. (chronic cholecystitis) it
could also be gas. (beans) finding out
the gallbladder ejection fraction is a
good idea. It is best obtained while you
are not having symptoms. There is better
chance of obtaining true results. You
must have an ultrasound first to exclude
the possibility of stones.
