Pain In the Butt - Literally! Posted: 11-23-04 04:24am
Hi all!
Hopefully, as this looks like a very busy
forum, someone will be able to shed some
light on this problem that I have had.
I have been going to the gym for about 18
months now, doing strength training and
cardio (mostly running and bike) and about
2 months ago I started some circuit
training.
Around the same time, I developed a pain
in my left buttock which was sporadic and
felt like being poked with somethins
sharp. These has recently developed into
a lumbar pain, which has become more
regular and painful. I recently visited
my doctor and he has suggested a lumbar
x-ray.
I have since cut out all exercise for the
last week and have seen no improvement.
Can anyone help suggest what this could be
and how to rememdy it?
Thanks in advance!

Honestly a lumbar x-ray will probably
prove to be useless. You should ask for
an mri if you can get one. It will give
more answers and if there are soft tissue
injuries it will be more apt to show them
then an x-ray. It really sounds as though
you have a lumbar disc that is bulging or
has ruptured and is laying on a nerve
causing this pain. I am not a doctor but
I do believe in todays modern medicine and
so I always recommend that you go to a
spine specialist and allow them to follow
a good course of action that has been
proven to help many others for life.
Please do not allow a chiropractor or any
other "quack" look at you or touch you.
This is the only advice I can offer. I am
haveing disc replacement surgery on
december 17th in clearwater fl. My doctor
is scott webb d.O. And he is with florida
spine instute.
dr. Gruber is my physiatrist/pain
management doc and he is the best! Caring
and a super hard worker in the field. You
have to be stern and make sure you are
refered to the right people. Back docs
are who you need to see.

Try Piriformis Massage Posted: 04-24-06 14:14pm
Hi,
there is a high chance that tight
piriformis muscle in your buttock causes
your buttock pain. It's very common if
you sit a lot and especially when you are
a woman. Thus it is important to stretch
your pirifromis muscle. Before that you
must improve the circulation and
innervation of this muscle by relaxing.
When I was working whole day, I
successfully used acupressure massage of
huantiao point (gb 30) in my buttocks to
get effective relief for my buttock pain.
I have now out together a book
demonstrating these techniques. If you
are interested, check it at http://www.Homebackpaina
cupressure.Com/
kind regards,
virpi

My money is on a possible herniated or
bulging l5 s1 disk... Since the buttock
pain is usually the first symptom. An
xray will not show anything... And mri
would be more likely.
Since it's just starting there are a
couple of things you can do. Ice. Ice is
your best friend. Gel pack on your lower
back and also your buttock.
For ten years I used to have my husband
massage my sciatic nerve especially in the
buttock area where the pain is. The
sciatic nerve is as big as a man's
thumb..Huge nerve and it goes right
through the muscle right there in that
spot that hurts. Massage can help loosen
up the muscle around the nerve.
You probably have a compromised disk in
your lumbar... Treat your back as such
until you can get a diagnosis. Some
activities can make it worse. I've had a
microdiscectomy in 2000 reruptures in 2004
& 2005-06 and so far this year i've
had three epidural spinal injections. All
symptoms begin with a pain in the butt...
So i'm betting you've got an l5s1
problem.
Take care of yourself! =}

As you already have been told an injury to
your lumbar spine is probably the culprit
here, due to the onset of buttock pain and
now lumbar pain. The standard x-ray is
pretty much useless in diagnosing anything
in the back, except broken bones and such.
A mri is much more reliable in
diagnosing soft tissue damage, ie ruptured
disc, good luck to you and keep us posted.

Pain In Buttock-should I Get a Second Opinion??? Posted: 06-12-07 06:47am
Hello. I came here because I didn't know
where else to turn. I was recently told
that I need to have back surgery due to my
burning pain in my buttocks, that I have
had on/off about 6 years now. For the
past 2 years it has been almost a constant
annoying pain and months ago started going
down the back of my leg. I have done
physical therapy, I had a shoe lift (from
a tilted pelvis) had a breast reduction in
2002, been to see many chiropractors, had
steroid epidural injections, facet
injections, cortizone injections &
worn a brace. I have been told that I
have degenerative joint disease,
arthropathy & arthritis.
A couple of months ago I had an MRI done
and went and saw a orthopedic surgeon in
SA TX and he said I had a cyst on each
side of the L5 S1 region, one was bigger
than the other, but not the side that
hurts more. Also that there was a bone
spur on the side that hurts that is
pinching the nerve (assuming siatica
nerve) He reccommended that I have the
MITR-microdisectomy surgery done along
with removal of the cysts. He said the
cyst were caused from repetitious
movement, and that they could come back.
I had the surgery scheduled and chickened
out last minute, thinking I needed a
second opinion. The injection really help
for the first month or so and then when
the pain comes back, it's back with a
vengence!
What I couldn't understand is that when
the surgeon was looking at my MRI, he
looked at me & said "You know looking
at this & looking at you, these do not
look like they belong to you." Basically
telling me that my joints look "old." I
am 30. I have several different reason
why I hurt so much, but I guess I was
looking for an exact reason for my pain.
I am an active mother of 3, love to go to
the gym and workout and just stay busy. I
will not live the rest of my life laid up
in bed or limited to what I can do for the
rest of my life. I am too youg in my
opinion to be going through any of this.
If anyone can help me at all I would
appreciate it greatly. Thanks.
