Q: Yeast Infection Treatment Advice - Worried

Hi,

i'm 26 and recently become sexually active. My partner had standard std testing a few months ago and is, to my knowledge, clean. I have a throat infeciton the docs are trying to treat (had penicillin, not done anything) so they've sent away for a test. This has lasted 3 weeks, the last week of which I went to the doc and got penicillin, having tried my usual remedies of salt water and orange juice.

Same week as taking the penicillin I also started having white sticky vaginal discharge and itching around the urethral area.

3 days ago doc simply said "oh that'll be thrush caused by the penicillin, go get something at the chemist" or words to that effect. She did not examine me.

I have canestan combi 1 day treatment, and it says on it not to use without doc say so if it's the first time i've had an infection.. This put me off using it as the doc never actually made sure of anything.

I'm a bit apprehensive at using it, so put it off last night. This morning I have a brown discharge, (which may well be my period, I don't really konw, as I have never had a cycle and it's not unusual for it to begin brown in my experience).

It's not itching too badly, I can ignore it, just about. I'm thinking of doing the live yogurt thing instead of the chemist meds as i'm scared of a reaction or making things worse.

Opinions? Any harm in doing the canestan while on a period? Should I just go for it and see? Am I being overly anxious and paranoid about this? Confused I tend to panic and overreact a lot, i'm aware of this but don't konw if tihs is one of those occasions.

It is probably a yeast infection. Many of us get them whenever we take antibiotics.Follow your doc's advice and you'll be much better in a few days. The yogurt will not do much to get rid of the infection at this point, but may help rebalance your vaginal flora to prevent a recurrance. In the future,if you need to take antibiotics, eat some live yogurt everyday when on the meds.Good luck to you.Patty

Thanks for the opinion. My biggest fear is taht it's been misdiagnosed and is really chlamydia... But like I said, paranoia....

I don't think using the yeast stuff will hurt u any more. They also say if u do the treatment and it doesn't clear up to see the doc. At that point I would say it could be something else. When I had chlamidia I had a weird sensation in my inner thighs sometimes...
