I got a phone call from my Dr. Today and he said that my 18 week sonogram showed I have a low lying placenta. Sad he does not want my husband and I to have any intercourse for the next three weeks till I get another sonogram. Have any of you had this? And how serious of an issue is it? Confused

Hi! How are you? Well I know, probably a lil worried. But you shouldn't be. I had a low lying placenta with my second pregnancy. My doctor called it placenta previa. Pretty much my placenta was covering the opening to my cervix. Luckily, I was only about 35ish weeks when they found out, and by the time I was ready to deliver, as my belly grew, the placenta moved up. Your only 18 weeks along, so that should give it plenty of time to move as you grow. Hope I helped at least a lil bit.

When are u due? And congratulations!

Don't Necessarily Agree With Last Post!
I also had placenta previa with my pregnancy and I don't totally agree with the last reply. It can be serious. Serious enough to cause me to go into early labor at six months and be on total bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy. And, my placenta never did move. I am not trying to scare you because it is treatable, but you should listen to whatever your doctor says. Having intercourse could cause you to hemorrhage, which is what happened to me. Don't freak out or anything! Just do what the doctor says and you'll have a healthy baby!

Doctors Advice
I had the same thing and that was my doctors advice...You should follow it as I had problems with major bleeding for 3 months of my pregnancy with going in the hospital for 2 weeks each month for bleeding for placenta previa..Also I had my son 1 month early...He was still healthy and doing good. So my advice would be to listen and take their advice..

Thanks
Thanks for your advice and believe me I will make sure to follow the dr's advice. I have a long way to go and hopefully this won't be an issue but it is definitely something that I am going to be careful with.

Placenta Previa
Hi. I just found out that I have placenta previa, my docter told me not to have entercouse or even an orgasime in any form. The news was very scary. I am 20 weeks and am afraid of going into preterm labor. My first pregnancy was toltaly normal. Is there a reason why it would happen with one and not the other? And do you really have to have a c section? Any info or comforting in this matter would be most appreceated.

My mother had this when she was pregnant with me. This can be serious if you do not follow your Dr.'s advise. One good way to help is to take it easy. All of the normal pregnancy rules definately apply in this case. No heavy lifting, etc... 99% of the time, these situations either resolve themselves or can be "treated" by taking it easy. But if you do not follow your Dr.'s orders, it can be potentially fatal.

Low Lying Placenta
I had a sonogram at 20 weeks and was told that I had a low lying placenta. I just had another sonogram and I am almost 29 weeks and it only moved 1 cm. It is currently 3cm away from my cervix. Does anyone know anything about this and it's risks during labor? I have an appointment in 2 weeks and I wanted to try to learn more about it before I talked to my doctor. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I just found out that I also had a low-lying placenta at my 18 week ultrasound. It has been almost five weeks since my ultrasound and I am just finding out now. My OB seemed very unconcerned and did not make any recommendation to avoid sex. I was told that the problem corrects itself in 95% of cases and that I will simply require another US at 32 weeks to see if that is the case.

Should I be more concerned? My doctor made it sound like no big deal!
