Q: Don't Know If This Is Blemish Related

For the past two and a half weeks I have had a lump on the side of my neck. It's an inch or so above my collar bone, feverish to touch, and has been growing slightly each week. It began the size of a pencil eraser and now is almost dime-sized (although the shape is oval). It does not itch, or hurt, but feels stiff like tissue and has a bluish spot on the center outside. I thought it was a large blemish at first, but now I am not sure. I can't get into my doc til next week and it's weighing on my nerves because there are a million things it could be (not all minor). Any thoughts on what this might be?

Cysts...
Dear 20,

from what you have described, it sounds as though you may have a cyst. Have you ever had one before ? Sometimes people who get cysts are prone to get them again elsewhere on their body. They can be removed at the hospital or your local surgery, depending on the doctor. I would be a little concerned about the size of it though, and the fact that it is still growing. I really couldn't tell you how big cysts can get. The reason I say it may be a cyst is because you mentioned it doesn't hurt. Cyst's don't usually hurt, maybe a little painful if you press on it very hard, but usually painless, they just seem to have a hard feel to them.

Good luck...

Yes, I considered it being a cyst because it wasn't painful, but I didn't think they grew so fast. It could very well be one because everyone in my family gets them. Does anyone know if its common for cysts to appear and grow so quickly? A month ago it was not there.

Cysts usually start off as a very small lump, so small you would think at first it was a tiny pimple and wouldn't think any more of it. Yes they do grow quickly, to have them removed your surgeon will need to remove the root that is growing inside, otherwise it will just get bigger over time. Unfortunately cysts seem to be hereditary, I am prone to them, so is my father and my daughter. I have had one on my neck and above my eye, my daughter has had one above her eye, and dad has had one on his neck and back.

Regards...
