Could This Be Aura?
Posted: 11-16-04 14:34pm

Hi all,

this is my first post here. I have been doing research on something that has been going on with me and plan to see a doctor, though not sure what kind to see yet. I talked about this with my gp when I got a physical, but she didn't seem concerned. I am very interested in your thoughts on this...Could it be aura or epilepsy? Here is a log I started today:

i decided to start logging pertinent information regarding something that has been happening to me for the past few years. The earliest I can remember it happening was some months after the final resolution of court cases associated with my divorce. This was sometime in 1996. At the time, the symptoms were very similar to those I am experiencing now. It happened more often than not at night, either just before or just after falling asleep. Other times, it happened during the day, I would say 30% of the time. For the past few years, I just attributed it to stress due to when it started, but am now starting to wonder about that.

The symptoms are extremely difficult for me to describe. A "feeling" comes over me; sort of like an intense gripping fear, almost physical in my chest and abdomen. At the same time, I get an intense feeling of deja-vu and unreality, and I have dreamlike images, even when awake. I also get this feeling of coldness inrushing through my sinuses and teeth. The coldness is flavored with ozone. These episodes appear to me to last only a few seconds each time they happen. This is a very inadequate description but the best I can do.

My reaction to it is usually to the intense moment of fear I feel. If my wife is present, I usually turn to her and hold onto her for dear life for a few moments until the feeling passes. What is really odd is when I feel it starting to come on, I can almost feel myself willing it to happen. I attribute this more to curiosity and wanting to experience it so that I can understand what is happening, because I definitely don't like the sensation.

Here, in detail, are the last two episodes logged. I will log any future ones in the same manner to share with a doctor:

date: november 15th, 2004
time: unknown, early morning hours between 2:00 am and 4:00 am (in bed, sleeping)
length: a few seconds
symptoms: intense fear, gripping feeling in my chest, smell and taste of ozone, feeling of deja-vu, feeling of unreality, very strange dream (i "saw" a human-like being coming down stairs in front of me.)

date: november 15th, 2004
time: 5:30 pm (on the commuter train while awake)
length: a few seconds, though afterward I was suddenly drowsy and actually dosed off on the train, which is unusual. I felt physically exhausted the rest of the evening.
Symptoms: intense fear, gripping feeling in my chest, smell and taste of ozone, feeling of deja-vu, feeling of unreality, I saw the same being as if I were dreaming, though I was awake and reading a book at the time. During the "vision" I saw nothing else but the dream. As the episode ended, I got this chill up my spine that ended in a tingling sensation in my scalp.

Aura

In general my auras consisted of having cold sensations that originated in my head that ruminated through my body. The sensations gave me goose bumps and a feeling of being outside of my body.I had similar symptoms that you have had during and after the auras.Numerous doctors dismissed these experiences.I was told I had anxiety and depression for 10mo before being diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy.I have been on a seizure medication now for almost a year and have not had any other episodes(knock on wood).
The only advice I can offer you is to see a neurologist and get eeg monitoring done to make sure. This could save you alot of needless pain and suffering I went through.

Thanks for the insight. I am curious, do you have the feelings of fear? How long did your aura last?

It's interesting what you said about the anxiety, my gp said the same thing, that it was probably stress related and a form of anxiety, but not to worry about it unless it got worse.

I got scared as hell.It started in 4/03 and finally with no relief I went to my gp in 6/03.A gp is not trained well enough to suspect epilepsy, especially auras. It is a feeling that no one can relate to.Knowing what I know now I would just ask the gp to get an eeg done.It is a non-invasive procedure that just monitors brain waves. Its simple.

The aura lasted about about 1 minute but ruined my day and I feared when the next one was coming.

Scared About Your Post

Today I had a "feeling" for the 3rd or 4th time in my life. It is new to me, and I could not really describe it completely if I tried. I turned to the internet, as I do for every question, and I was floored to say the least about your post. Jynj.
The only thing I could think to type in the serach engine was 3 words: intense daja-vu fear. The first thing I found was your post. When I read it, I couldn't believe that you had the feelings I did. I held back from telling anyone because I thought they would think I sounded crazy. I thought maybe I was crazy. I did not feel exactly as you said you did, but enough for me to not feel like I am crazy anymore. First I sat my friend down and told him I had something strange to tell, and I spilled it about this strange feeling, that left me exhausted. I asked if he thought I was crazy. He said maybe. Then I said, "what do you think if I say I think I may have had some type of vision?" and he didn't say anything. I asked again if he thought I was crazy. Once when I felt the feeling, I dropped to my knees and prayed for god to stop it, because it was such a feeling of fear that it seemed unreal, and I thought possibly it was something evil. When I read your post I was astounded that someone else felt what I felt. I can actually still feel this lingering feeling. I had symptoms that you did not mention: a hard time swallowing, racing heart beat, my face felt suddenly hot, and my head felt......Starnge, my body felt.........Off. Once I think I saw a vision of a woman and a horse, but I am not even sure if that was what it was. I am not so sure of anything, only that I don't like the feeling at all. I now feel exhausted, but I am not sure if it is physical, I mean I know it is, but it could be mental exhaustion also from the fear. Have you any new info on this? What is aura? Are we sure it's not something supernatural?

Melynda

first an aura is not supernatural, it's a very small seziure or the start of one. I get them every now and again my auras are similar to jyng's. You might want to go see your doctor though.

Sounds a lot like what happens to me. Tomorrow I go in for a sleep deprived eeg. Wish me luck!

Worst part is no caffeine 24 hours prior.

Aura?

Hi all,

ok..Here is my story...

I started with these episodes about 4 years ago. The first one occurred just after my husband and I moved to our new place. I was sitting on the front porch admiring a tree...Then it happened.

It felt as though I was sucked into a dream state. Something was going on in this "dream" but I can't remember what (i never can). After a few seconds, I start coming back to reality slowly losing what I was "seeing". Afterwards, I am tired...Drained for a couple of hours.

Sometimes, the potential onset of these states is noted by a slight feeling of dissociation and/or anxiety - sometimes a few minutes, others, a few days - but never so much that I can't function normally. With the exception of one time I remember, the trigger is always something visual. For instance, while at work yesterday morning, I saw a couple of words on the computer screen and boom...There I was.

If I try to talk during an episode, I feel as though I am speaking in another language and I sense that my sentences are choppy.

In some regards, I don't want to see these episodes end...I want to figure out where these "dreams" are leading, but the sensible side of me knows I had better get this checked out before it happens while I am driving (it has once a couple of years ago). It is just a matter of where to start.

Thanks for the opportunity to get some insight from others who may be experiencing something similar.

Migraine with aura is characterized by a neurological phenomenon (aura) that is experienced 10 to 30 minutes before the headache. Most auras are visual and are described as bright shimmering lights around objects or at the edges of the field of vision (called scintillating scotomas) or zigzag lines, wavy images, or hallucinations. Others experience temporary vision loss.

Nonvisual auras include motor weakness, speech or language abnormalities, dizziness, vertigo, and tingling or numbness (parasthesia) of the face, tongue, or extremities.

Hi there:
I am surprised for what I have read here. I have had similar episodes, no too many, about two or three in the last 3 and a half years.
I am a musician, and I remember being playing on the stage my saxophone, when people and things around me started to feel "unreal" and distant. I was almost in panic and my heart beated a lot. Also I had a heavy pressure sensation on my eyes and in front of my head.
I went to Dr and he prescribed Propanolol and alprazolam (benzo). My symptoms continued and I visited a lot of Drs and no one seems to be able to diagnose anything wrong.
I was checked for heart, sinus infection, eye exams, blood tests, etc. Including a EEG that showed nothing wrong.
It is possible that even when I had a EEG I may have epilepsy? I am so tired from this situation, I have been on antidepressants also. At this momet I don't take any drug at all.
I am asking this because I only had one EEG and was normal. Is there just one type of EEG? or there are different kinds?
Thanks if anyone reply, and excuse my english.

Aura's
Posted: 08-11-07 01:46am

I really can't describe my Aura's other than they are a horrible feeling. Mine will start with an incredible nausia and than a very out of body experience and all senses are magnified. I can smell everything and hear everything so much more. I feel very scared and i want to just be left alone. I dont like if people talk to me during these and just ask that i am given a few seconds. I am very tired after mine and usually sleep. The funny thing is i had febrile seizures as a child, auras my whole life (i just thought i got de ja vu alot) than my seizures started again at 21.

I have had every test. all blood work, tried dilantin, topamax and now on lamictal. I have been given every diagnosis you can think of. My seizures used to be just in my sleep. Now they have changed and are happening in the day. I dont know i am just confused on my next step. Find another Neurologist who will take time to diagnose me, or take my meds and hope for the best.

Could this be Aura? reply

Hi Jyng, my body started trembling when I read this because I feel exactly the same as you describe, and my feelings also started around 1996 what I'm not sure about is if before or after I had my first baby. The only diference I can find is I don't feel like my spirit is out of my body, let me ask you, have you noticed any change in your memory eficiency, because I used to have a very good memory and I have the feeling that I started losing it along with these episodes started, I can still remember things from the past but I easily forget things that happened to me yesterday, I'm not talking about who I am or where I am nothing like that, just every day things that happen I tend to forget now. Everytime I search online for my symptoms I find them related to epilepsia, I have not been to the doctor, I don't know why, sometimes if I don't get the sensation in a certain period of time I just let it past over my head, never heard of AURA before, I will post more comments as soon as I get to the doctor.
