Are there any small to medium sized dogs that are known to be allergy free for very sensitive children? My son suffers from strydor asthma and we are looking for a dog that would be appropriate to bring into the house. Are there any?

Yes, shitzu's are one of the best dogs for people with allergies. However these dogs themselves have allergies.

Is he allergic to dogs? If not, he could probably do fine with just any dog.

What do you mean he's got "stridor" asthma? Stridor doesn't usually occur with asthma, but is more related to narrowing of the larynx or subglottic airways.

I wouldnt get any other dog, cuz he may not be allergic now, but could easily develop an allergy to it.

Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds
Susan,
i too have asthma and needed to get a 'hypoallergenic' dog breed. The ones I know of for sure are poodles, maltese, sh*tzu, bichon frise, poodle crosses (ie shipooh, maltipooh, cockapooh), and chinese cresteds. I would recommend allowing your son to hold/pet any dog before bringing it home. The only allergic reactions I have to my chinese crested is when I clean his ears or eyes without washing my hands immediately afterwards. Hope this helps!

Okay this is an old post, but maybe you'll still get this! Me and my mom both have allergies, so she did a lot of research before getting me a dog. We have a lhasa apso, which is very similar to a sh*tzu, but a little bit bigger and not as much of a squished face. They are supposed to fairly allergy free because their hair is similar to humans in texture, if that makes sense. Hope this helps, and good luck finding a dog that will fit in the family!
