Q: Major Pms After Hysterectomy....is This Common?

Hello, my name is julie. I am 42 years old and had a hysterectomy 6 weeks ago. Great decision as far as all the female problems are resolved. I have one ovary left. I am feeling so disconnected with family and friends and just really could care less about anything. Is this normal and will I get over it on my own or should I see my doctor. I feel like I am in a state of pms everyday. I used to feel this way for a few days before my period and I hated it! Could it be that my hormones are all wacky? I would love to hear from anyone that went through or is going through the same thing. Thanks, julie

Hi, i'm sorry to hear that your recovery has been so rocky emotionally. It's rough to go through the trauma of surgery and then to have the additional problem of the hormone upset. It feels like it will go on forever.

It's possible that your hormones are still finding their level.

After my hysterectomy I had a few episodes where I felt like things were completely out of my control. I knew it was the hormones, that there was no rational explanation for my fear, anger or sadness at any particular moment but it still didn't make those feelings go away.

You might want to check out a group called hystersisters.Com, you'll find lots of other women there who have been where you are now (or have been).

Take care.

I'm 33 years old and I had a full hysterectomy done 2 years ago. I have been feeling what seems like pms cramping also, and I am just disconnected from everyone.I am worried the tumor grew back. I thought you weren't suppose to get anykind of pms anything after this type of surgery. Its like no one understands. I had a cyst growing in my overy and had everything removed. I know my hormones are out of wack, but the hormone replacement pills don't seem to work. I am sad all the time, and I can hardly sleep. I ended up having 2 huge hernia's repaired this year, and I am finally off of recovery time. I do not understand my moods though. I have suffered from depression for some years now, and I dont know if that is my problem. The doctor said the hormone pills I am on is strong enough. I don't know what to do anymore. I am tired of being sad, and I wish I could get some sleep. Does anyone have any ideas?

I don't know about your having cramps, but if you think you have a recurrence of a tummor I would strongly suggest you discuss your worries with your doctor and possibly have them do an ultrasound? I had one like a complete 4 years ago; and after the intitial 3 weeks or so with experimenting with hormones, (my moods where off also); I finally found success with a hormone called "estratest" that has a bit of the male hormone that our overies usually produce. I believe our thyroid is supposed to produce some; but it in all, by taking that one I fealt great. My sexuality and energy came back and I quite frankly wish I could have done this years ago when I had a tubal ligation. The real estratest is better, but there are also a few brands that are generic, which is all my insurance will cover; and I did have problems when I first switched to the generic, then switched manufacturers and I am back to good moods and normal feeling. Hope this helps... Lisa

I had an abdominal hysterectomy 7wks ago, and having been doing great physically, but I also have been experiencing some mood swings, whereby I feel like I have drunk a bucket of caffeine, I either want to cry or scream at someone. I am forgetful and feel in that "fog" you feel just before your period. I have heightenend anxiety. I have one ovary left. My breasts get so swollen and tender at certain times in the month. I was wondering if my ovary was in "shock". I heard 50% of women's ovaries never "wake up" after surgery and we tend to go into menopause much earlier, in 5yrs. I was thinking whether I could get a hormone level check, but know these are not always accurate until you have been through menopause. I can sympathise with you, it is a horrible feeling that is hard to describe to people, I hope it doesn't last long.
Good Luck
