I've been having the same problem as seems popular here for about the past 6 months. I'm only 17, I exercise regularly, eat healthy for the most part, and have no idea why my pee started smelling like chicken! I've had both a bladder and a kidney infection before so I know these aren't the cause, and I don't drink or smoke. My doctor had me using monistat for a week, thinking it was a yeast infection, but to no avail. HELP!
It concerns me that so many ppl have had this persistent problem and nobody seems to have any answers. I sure hope if someone finds the cause/remedy they would be kind enough to come back and post it for the rest of us.
For at least two years, I had noticed the same bad odor in my urine. It had gotten to the point where it was truly embarrassing. I could smell it in my underwear and wherever I sat. I just knew everyone else could smell it too. I tried switching soap, using feminine deoderant sprays, and douching. I just could not figure out where the odor was coming from. Every time I made an appointment with a doctor, I would get a clean bill of health.
I decided to make the following changes:
1. Drink more water. I have to force myself to drink water. So, first thing in the morning, I have a full bottle (20 oz.), then another when I get to work, another right after lunch, and another right before leaving. Believe me that's a whole lot more than I was drinking.
2. Go to the bathroom at least three times during the day. I've been known to work straight through without taking a break to go to the bathroom. Holding your uring like that can lead to all kinds of problems, particularly urinary tract infections.
3. Finally, and this is what made the difference, I purchased some AZO Cranberry (with immune boosting probiotic & vitamin c). I took two pills a day with my morning water and within a week, the odor was gone. No kidding.
I'm not a doctor so this is not a prescription. I'm just letting you know what worked for me. If your symptoms persist, you should consult a physician.
it my believe that do to the introduction of trangenic crops, those crazy proteins inserted in food that God never intended, are not being properly metabolized by our kidneys, and the result is the bad smell of the urine.
i may be wrong but the only way to find out, its to analyze our urines by a PCR/DNA testing for foreing proteins! like for example the famous CRY proteins they use in pretty much every single crop in america now a days and since long ago late 2005 early 2006.
I've been having the same problem for about a year and a half now my pee smells like mushrooms and i've had 9 UTI's in a year!!!! no std's and I've had the same partner for 2 years. it's really embarrassing I don't have insurance so I have to wait to see a free urologist which is going to take months I'm going crazy though so if anyone could help please reply
Well I have had different things happen to me. First my smelled like Captiain Crunch Cereal- I know that sounds odd- but since I don't eat sugar that made it even weirder. After checking on-line, I asked to be tested for diabetes and was borderline. I have since changed my diet and eat more of a lower carb diet and also lower fat. I have been doing this for almost a year and lost 40 lbs. Now my urine has started to smell really strong and pungent. It's gross and every once in awhile I get a slight burning- but no frequency of urination or burning all the time. Plus I just had a check up and my urine came back normal. Trying to figure out what is causing this, because it is awful. BTW- for those wondering- I do know that Caffeine, Asparagus, Garlic, and Beets will change the odor of your urine. You can drink more water to dilute it- but those things just cause that in our system naturally. Hope someone has an answer and that some of this info helps someone else.
I hear you all!
I mentioned this to my MD. No results found in testing. My Md said very few women mention this thing so we were kicking around some questions. Maybe it is simply related to our bodies beginning to age (she is my age but doesn't have these complaints) So, I wonder this from you all:
your age (be honest, I'm 43)
smoker yes or no (i'm a smoker)
average weight, under or overweight? I carry about 30lb too much
ever had a pap that showed minor cell (benign) changes? I have but subsequent Pap showned normal.
vegetarian or no (i'm not)
any medication (including birth control)
intermittant or continual? (i find it 'flares' up about 7-10days before my period)
do you drink city treated water or well water? (i'm on well water)
The first time this happened to me was when i was fasting for a medical exam with an endocrinologist. It also happened when I was doing the Atkins diet. It has something to do with not having enough carbs to ballance your protein intake. With how the "diet media" has us all scared of carbs these days it is probably the culprit for most of our "meaty" smelling urine problems! That is why the one girl's urine test showed protein spilling into the urine and why people with dibetes have that and it is "ok"- Diabetics cannot eat carbs so this protein spilling happens more often to them (but if they are ballanceing their protein/carbs well enough it should not be the norm).
The best thing is to eat no more than 2x the amount of carb grams than of the protein grams intake at each meal, but you NEED some carbs (no more than 30 g of carbs every 2 hours though). Also, you should eat protein at each meal or snack to have healthy blood sugar levels that do not make you fat. Example of what I am talking about: for one meal if you eat 10 grams of protein you should have no more than about 20 grams of carbs (fruit, bread etc). You can have unlimited veggies, of course. If you are trying to also loose weight you need to watch how much fat you intake too.
All that to say, I would not worry, especially if you have seen a doc. You can try my suggestions to rememdy the problem since most docs do not go through all of this with you (unless you see an endocrinoligist like I did).
Also, what you are eating (ie: brocolli, asparagus, garlic, herbs and spices, etc) can certainly make your urine (and sweat) smell different too- but not "meaty".
I have been thinking that my pee smells like ramen noodles, I thought I was nuts, but the other day my husband was standing in the bathroom when I peed and he said, "hey, your pee smells like top ramen" I almost died. I can't believe he smelled it too!! I also have had very bad bloating and gas for several months with 15 lbs weight gain in 2 months since coming off of birth control pills...any ideas anyone? Please help! I HAVE RAMEN NOODLE PEE!!!
No one was taking me seriously about this BBQ sauce smelling pee but finally one doctor did and had me pee in a cup. She said not only did I have a bladder infection but it was LOADED with bacteria. Probably because I'd been suffering with this problem for months but ruled out bladder infection due to the fact that I had no pain/burning/discomfort/trouble urinating/increased frequency. I am on anti-biotics for it right now and am returning for follow up after my meds are up to make sure it's gone.
O MY GOD!! my pee smells like bacon too and its disgusting it lingers too and i drink soooo much water so it cant be dehydration or any medication for that matter! i really want someone to tell me what the hell this is
Mine smells like Bacon as well. More like Smoked bacon but you can also tell it's urine in smell so a mix of smoked bacon and urine. It's quite unnerving. I am not sure if I have a UT, but something is definitely wrong. I have had the smell for about 1 month now. The smell is so strong, not even 2 seconds after the urine has left my body do I smell it. Even after its been diluted the smell is still strong. I wanted to know exactly what was coming out so I took my last urine in a plastic water bottle. Sorry if I creep anyone out, but it was half-full of water so half is urine and the other half is water. The smell is still just as strong. WHAT ON EARTH IS HAPPENING!? I don't eat pork and my diet has not changed whatsoever...
I have smelly urine also. It started after I gave birth to my daughter. I assumed it was just a vaginal smell as a result of my weight gain until I happened to be on antibiotics for strep throat. My smelly urnine/vagina was cured! Temporarily. The smell crept back over the following days after finishing my antibiotics. It was suck a relief during that time when there was no smell. I was not embarassed to have someone go into the washroom after me. I told my doctor, she ran some tests (urine, chlamidia) and all came back normal. Here i am still suffering.
I have been following this thread for at least a year, and like most of you, I have been living with this relentless, horrid pee (with no pain/discomfort). I visited my doctor several times, always passing the urine tests. My doctor tried to assure me that it was just natural odors from my vagina. I tried everything- cranberry, plenty of water, peeing often, even adding the cider vinegar to my water as someone suggested earlier in this discussion. It got the point where I would be mortified if I knew someone was going to use the restroom after me.
I couldn't take it anymore and I marched back to the doctor and asked for another test. I said, "I would KNOW if my V were stinky, and this is not a stinky V problem. I am in good health. Nothing natural should smell this way. Something is WRONG." I peed in the cup again, and was later given a presciption for ciprofloxacin. I made sure I finished all of my doses and...the smell went away!!! It is now months later and it has not returned.
I don't know why bacteria did not show in all my previous tests. But I am glad I went back that last time. I am no doctor, but I think cipro is a stronger antibiotic than some others used for UTI. Maybe that's what kicked it....I don't know if what you have is an infection, but I do know that if something really doesn't feel right or smell right to you....something is wrong!
Keep trying, guys. Go back to your doctor or go to another one! Best wishes.
This is unusual...Cipro is not considered one of the drugs that cures an UTI...Possibly different drugs react in a different way on certain people...I am happy that they found your problem...Take care...
12/3...With my being allergic to Amoxicillan, Sulfa as well as Morphine, my OB-GYN would not prescribe Cipro...Then I face the problem of building up an immunity to a drug....So goes life....
Cipro and bactrim/bactrim ds are two of the most commonly used antibiotics to treat a UTI. Bactrim is usually the first choice but with so many people allergic to sulfa and penicillin, cipro is usually next in line. Its also first in line after keflex for treating URI. Maybe using a different antibiotic than what is normally prescribed for a person is catching what gets missed. At any rate, diet and activity can greatly affect waste from the body. The additives and whatnot in our foods and even in the water could be a culprit in the urine smells like...
