Q: An Open Letter to John Kerry On Abortion

(i didn't write this and I know the election is over, but just read some of the points.)

dear senator john kerry,
to whom it may concern:

america is a place of hope and opportunity for many reasons. Chief among them we are a people of great faith and that is what keeps us strong.

But while americans have always been a religious people, our faith is tied to reason. We choose goodness and truth not only because faith tells us to, but also because doing otherwise would be inherently wrong.

Disagreements will always exist in the civic arena. How high the minimum wage? How to best provide educational opportunity for all? The appropriate level of taxation? These are decisions that we work out in the political process and upon which the church has no specialized knowledge. As catholics and as americans we are called to discern the truth in public policy and to determine which candidate best addresses our concerns.

There are core truths, however, around which we as catholics must rally. Not just because it is the word of the church, but also because of reason. This is where we stand on opposition to abortion.

Innocent human life must always be protected. Senator john kerry, you have said that “life begins at conception,” but you have persistently supported abortion and oppose all sensible restrictions on the practice.

You have voted six times against banning the barbaric practice of partial birth abortion. You voted to spend taxpayers’ dollars to fund abortion at least 25 times.

You opposed laci and conner’s law, which protects pregnant women and their unborn babies from violent crimes.

In the most recent debate senator kerry, you said, "everything you do in public life has to be guided by your faith” and that “everything is a gift from the almighty.” but apparently, when it comes to the issue of the right to life, you follow neither your own faith nor your own reason.

Senator kerry, your stand contradicts both your faith and reason.

The religious fanaticism taking over every aspect of life in america is truly frightening.

Morality Schmorality...
I am a libertarian and we believe that we should be able to do whatever the hell we want as long as it doesn't infringe upon other people's rights and we believe in personal responsibility for our actions. I don't give a flying crapola if something is morally wrong or right.. If aint it hurting you or taking your right.. I should be able to do it. I am not christian and I will not follow christian morality and I don't think it's right to legislate something so subjective.. Especially christian morality because some christians believe birth control is wrong.. It's only christian morality that can come up with it and that is why I fear a christian republican being in office because I like not having to worry about not getting pregnant and not having periods and some christians think depo is an abortifacient.. I used to think it was too when I was prolife.. Then I woke up. I could have made a stupid mistake and have gotten pregnant if I kept that mentality any longer and if I had gotten pregnant.. I recently switched to 100% prochoice which means there may be a possibility I may abort myself depending on my mentality when if it ever happens so due to that morality.. I possibly would've had an abortion whereas I wouldn't have had I not had that morality.

That is one of the few issues I agreed with john kerry on. Even as a man and a christian he still understands human rights.

Good discussion people

poopoo, secular fanaticism can be just as freightening, and we are all our own people, everyone matters

bd1012, abortion does infringe on another life... Not just that life's rights, but its very existence, it is a human being until it is aborted and ceases being, do you see where my difficulty in accepting the free-for-all practice of abortion lies?

Hotasfrick, should human rights not begin as soon as one is human? We are human the moment we come into being, and that isn't at birth.

Yes, I have to agree--the u.S. Has a severe evangelical disease occuring . But bush (he could never live up to that name) won by the narrowest margin for a 2nd term president since 1916. He won by only 3million people and there are 300 million americans. 50 million voted for kerrry. I don't think the country will go down that easy, but who who knows the christians did pull us in the dark ages so it could be all down hill for the u.S.

I find it ironic that in manahatten, the target of the first terrorist attack on us soil, voted for kerry-95%. The metro area--85%

Whereistheline....I don't believe that a fetus is a human being. Therefore, the "human rights" don't apply to it. Now, after so many months when the fetus could survive on its own if born premature, I think aborting is sick, but when it is still just tissues, I don't consider it an actual person.

Dont you understand! Of course the citys would vote for kerry!

In the citys you have a large number of minority and presure groups such as homosexuals, black people, asians, muslims, feminists, etc.

The city vote is not a vote for the majority of the ordinary people, thats the problem with the partys that go after the city vote, they become a party for the minoritys and negleget the majority.

Thankfully the ordinary people voted for a majority party, the majority of the american population are christian - so what is wrong with a party that has chrsitian values?

Wow. Our lesson for the day:
cities, minorities, parties, and african american.
Okay, now that is done. Actually the electoral votes come from the majority. I don't know what your whole point is because even if the "minorities" in the city vote for a certain person, the rest of the state's votes are also counted and included in the whole.
So, what is your point? Minorities shouldn't vote? They vote for the "wrong" people in your opinion? I don't care if you are a minority or not. People are people and they have the right to vote for whomever they want to. Heck, even the morons are allowed to vote!
And just because someone may have voted opposite of you doesn't make them unordinary. Are you god now? Anyone who doesn't agree with you is automatically wrong and therefore african american? Are you a kkk member?

you obviously don't or you'd probably agree with me more. Aren't we all still "just tissues" ? That is vague. How can you not consider it human? If it isn't human then, why is it human a little later when it can be born prematurely, and I agree with you killing at that point is sick, but I would argue killing it even earlier is still sick.

I feel that once you are born you are human. And yes, we are ultimately all just tissues and cells even now, but we have been born and have survived on our own. And no, people on life support are not inhuman now because they cannot survive on their own. As I said, they grew from fetus to child and are not human beings whether or not they need a machine to survive.
You may not agree and that is your perogative, but as I said that is even the law, so I am not alone in my views.
As I have said before abortion doesn't make me happy, but I do understand that in certain instances it is the best choice and in some even necessary.

What I am saying is that city partys are influenced by city people, so a party that aims for the city vote will have minortiy pressure groups presuring city partys into deciding their manifestos hence the minorty will rule the majority and that is not democracy!

Kerry was always going to get the north east as thats where he is from new york/nj areas as they are large melting pots of minority groups also california is the major state for homosexuals. I wonder how many people voted bush in these areas I bet they were still close states.

What you get is the ordinary people are pushed to one side in these states and the party goes after votes from minority groups because they know that these places have a high number of people and a high electoral collage vote. Therefore it is possible to win a state like ny or california not with the vote of the overall country majority but of the inner city minority.

You still haven't made a point though. So what if "minorities" vote? So what if there votes matter because they are the majority of a population in an area? Are they not people? Do their opinions not matter? Are you the grand wizard?
Do you also have a problem with gay people? You should like gay people, they don't have abortions because they don't fall pregnant (unless raped) I assume you have a problem with gay marriage too.
Okay, so let's rap this up here. You don't like women, homosexuals, african americans, muslims, feminists, anyone who isn't a white male right? Have you ever really stopped to think about how uneducated that way of thinking is? Do you know that african american's skin is only darker than ours because they have a thicker layer of a certain protein. That is the only reason. That is the only real difference. What makes you think you are better than someone because your skin is lighter?
What makes you ordinary and right and everyone else wrong? So you should be the only one allowed to vote? Oh wait, yeah. Let's go ahead and just let the white males vote again. You saw how great that was going!Lol. Why do you think the laws were changed honey?
Open your mind and start to understand the ways of the world and of people. Color, sex, sexual orientation do not make anyone who they are and don't freakin matter.

Of course these people matter of course we need to be understanding a fair and treat them like human beings! What I am tring to say is..

You see homosexual marraige the majority of people are against it yet a party because of the innercity minorty will force homosexual marriage onto the nation becuase they want that 2% of the population to vote for them. I dont know about you but I think that is wrong!

Same too with abortion the majority of people would like to see it banned or severly restricted to rape incest and life of mother yet the city partys want the vote of the city presure groups "feminists" and the financial backing of planned parenthood so again unrestricted abortion is force upon the majority of people!

Media too are innercity business's that come under pressure from groups too and the media uses its influence on the majority of the people. What we have is a very subtle oppresion of the majority.

So 30 years ago it was considered illegal and wrong to have intercourse with a person of the same sex but through the media they have changed many peoples opinions they now believe it should be legal perhaps some even think it is perfectly ok to have same sex intercourse. The influence of the minorities is more than capable of forcing their belifes on us!

I am neither a minority nor gay,yet I voted for .........Not bush!!It is silly to group people who live in urban areas into neat little piles.I have lived in a major metropolitan area all my life and have voted both democrat and republican-based on who I think will do the best job.I am very afraid that the changes in the supreme court could very well take away our freedom of choice. We will not let this happen, without a fight.Patty

The minority is not forcing abortion upon you unless you were pregnant and we were forcing you to abort.. The only thing we are "forcing" you to do is to not force your beliefs upon us. The difference between our agenda and yours is that you are caused nothing but disgust and that doesn't violate any of your rights but your agenda would involve violating rights. I don't want to hear that we are forcing anything upon you because we're not. Rolling Eyes

btw.. I think your morals are more twisted than mine could ever be. You support discrimination against those who don't choose to live the lifestyle you think they should.. You support forcing .Y.O.U.R morality down other people's throats because .Y.O.U think you are right. My morals are that we are created equal and that as long as no one's rights are violated... I believe people are smart enough to make there own decisions in life and should be allowed to do so whether people have a problem with it or not unless someone's right's are being violated..

I am talking about born persons here so don't even go there... I already know what you are going to say becuase I have heard it all and I was once prolife myself.

Patty first off do you live in or around a city? If so your much more likely to have city values.

2nd how much of your opinions have been formulated by what you have been told by the media?

3rd you are a woman and many women especially the younger women have been influencd by the media's promotion of what it calls "girl power" due to the influences of the presure group "feminism"

"i am very afraid that the changes in the supreme court could very well take away our freedom of choice"

was america a unfree society in 1972? If the sc were to over turn roe v wade they would not be taking away freedom of choice but our licence to kill human beings!

Suppose you were a man and the debate was about making rape ilegal would you say if the sc were to make rape ilegal it would be taking away our freedom of choice?

"the minority is not forcing abortion upon you unless you were pregnant and we were forcing you to abort"

again the mind with the comprehension of a jelly fish!

The majority of the nation is against abortion in one form or another, therefore the minority are forcing there morallity upon the nation!

"the only thing we are "forcing" you to do is to not force your beliefs upon us."

everyone gets belifes forced upon them by the majority we are a democracy, why should the majority allow a human being to be killed if they think it is wrong just because a minority say they dont see killing as wrong!

"i don't want to hear that we are forcing anything upon you because we're not."

i dont want to hear many things but the truth is the truth!

"i think your morals are more twisted than mine could ever be. You support discrimination against those who don't choose to live the lifestyle you think they should"

fine do you agree rapists murderers theives racisits etc who dont choose to live the lifestyle the way you do should not be "forced" to live in accordance with the laws the majority believe to be right?

"i believe people are smart enough to make there own decisions in life and should be allowed to do so whether people have a problem with it or not unless someone's right's are being violated"

well duh! What do you think abortion does it violates every single right because it takes away the supreem right, the right to life. The law dosnt give rights as the law can be changed and wrong, morality dosnt give rights nor religion etc - the constitution gives all persons rights including the unborn you may say the unborn arnt persons but there you go they were persons until 1973 - the term person at the time the constitution was writen meant the same as human being and thus the court redefined the term therefore the law is against the constiution and violates the rights of the unborn human being/person.
