Q: Having Hysterectomy Next Week

Hi, I am having a hysterectomy next week. I am 49, supposedly post menpausal (no period in 3 years and not on hrt). I have a "cystic like" mass in my uterus or on the right ovary about the size of a small orange, but no one can seem to pin point exactly where it is or what it is, if it is a fibroid or a cyst. I had vaginal and abdominal ultrasounds which were inconclusive and I had a ct scan which confirmed the size of the mass. I had all the blood work you can think of including a ca125 which was negative. I've had kidney and liver functions, all normal. The surgery will not be laproscopical or vaginal as I have a lot of scar tissue from 6 previous c-sections. They are taking everything out, the scar tissue, uterus and ovaries.
Meanwhile I am growing out of my clothes. I look like I am seven months pregnant. My mother and best friend both agree that my stomach is out of proportion with the rest of my body, so I am not just gaining weight. My abdomen is hard. I feel movement inside of me. I think that it is all in my head. I had my tubes tied with my last baby 16 years ago.
I feel like I am pregnant but it isn't possible. Can anyone tell me what is going on? Am I going crazy?

It sounds like you have either a large fibroid (which tend to be very hard to the touch) or a complex cyst. Fibroids are not at all uncommon and can be removed while preserving the uterus. I'm surprised your doctor did not suggest a laproscopic scope or hysteroscopy to look around before proceeding with such a radical procedure.

If it does end up being a fibroid uterus, have you considered keeping your ovaries? Having your ovaries out post-menopuase with no hrt can lead to seven times the risk of heart disease. Even though you're not having periods anymore, it doesn't mean that your ovaries have ceased to function, they are an essential part of your well-being.

I suggest you check out another forum called hystersisters.Com, it's a support site for women contemplating and going through hysterectomy and recovery.

I had a hysterectomy back in august for a bunch of fibroids (uterus the size of a four month pregnancy which protruded from my lower belly and pressed against my spine). My uterus and tumors weighed 1.4 pounds (normal size is 3 ounces).

You've taken a huge step in trying to find out more about your condition.

Take care.
