Q: Pain Pills And Pregnancy

I have been on pain medication for over a year now due to an unsuccessful back surgery and recently found out that I am pregnant. I'm weening myself down off of the meds, but i'm concerned about possible side effects. Is this and how damaging could this be during my first trimester?

Pain Killers & Pregnancy
Dear mindscape,

no pain killers are actually truly safe during pregnancy, there is only one type of pain killer that is ok in small doses but I can't remember if it is panadol or aspirin, but i'm sure that back pain medication such as ibrufen, panadene forte, tramal, vioxx and epilim are not suitable for use during pregnancy. You really need to discuss this with your doctor, he/she should be able to suggest other forms of pain relief. I know that back pain can be a very stubborn type of pain to keep under control, and medication is often used in conjunction with other methods to make it bearable, so I sympathise with your situation. It must be very frustrating for you.

Good luck...

Pregnancy And Pain Medication
I see you posted your statement in october! How is the pregnancy going, if all is correct from my understanding you would have already given birth? Hopefully you still visit this site-
i am in the same boat!!!!!!!!!!! I had 3 back surgerys last year and have been withdrawing myself from my pain medication however my husband and I had an opps last week and I am frantic---- we want children so bad, but I wanted to be completly of the medication before this happend. I dont even know if I am it is simply a possablity and since it happend I stopped completly just in case but then got so sick from withdrawls I had to start again. I am on a patch for the pain and I only let myself take one pain pill a day but I am taking motrin like crazy and that probably isnt good either. I need some advice from someone who has been in this situation. So I thought maybe that someone could be you, or maybe someone who is out there other then you whom posted the post I am replying to could give me a heads up, that would be greatly appreciated. All I need is for something bad to happen to my baby and I would never forgive myself if something was wrong because of something I did, it is to early to call the doctor and ask and to be honest I am a little embaressed to call and ask. I mean the withdrawls were bad for the little amount of medication I am on compared to what I used to be on. I mean what is worse on a fetus, withdrawls or the medication? Any feedback would be great.

Thank you-

Paracetamol, not aspirin.
Aspirin is linked to reye's syndrome

Having chronic pain is a terrible thing, but most presciption pain meds are not a good idea when you are pregnant or ttc.Ibuprofen is also not good, can cause spontanious abortions and cause problems with bleeding during delivery.Your best bet would be to see a pain specialist prior to conception to see what your options are.Hope all goes well for you.Patty

Pregnancy And Pain Killers
I recently had to have surgery on both arms for carpal tunnel. I had it first on the left arm, then found out I was pregnant. After several discussions with my ob/gyn and surgeon they agreed as long as I used only a local anestisia then the surgery would be reasonably safe. They could use a general only if necessary. I had the surgery and then was on vicodin until my arm healed. So far all is well and I will continue praying that all contunues to go well. I'd appreciate you all's prayers as well. I will say this, I wouldn't have had the procedure unless it was absolutely necessary.

So good luck!

No pain medications are safe for your little one, try to stop taking them immediately. One of my best friends mothers used to take them while she was pregnant with her and my friend was born with heart problems really major. She has had 7 open heart surgeries, she now has a pace maker and the doctors say she might not make it to 25 and she is now 20. Please for the sake of your baby they are soooooo dangerous!

I know this is an old post but I just wanted to add to this. Last year I had a severe 4 wheeler accident where I broke my back. I have been on pain meds ever since then. My back is different than most of you with back problems inow have an artifial vertbrea(titumin carraiage) before I got pregnant I was off of all my pain meds not aticapating to get pregnant just that my back was feeling good enough that ididn't need it then I had horrible pain my dr prescribed me with pain meds oxycodone with tyneol. And started it after my 12 ks and he assured me that no matter how many a person took after 12 wks it wouldn't cause any birht defects oranything that at the most the baby might go through withdrawls which is that last thing I want but yet I have a two year old at home I can't lay in bed in pain all day longso I have to take mine. I'm now 5 months and i'm growing normally and the baby is fine. So as long as your obgyn prescribes it for you you'll be fine!

Yeah I see where your coming from but for us people with back problems sometimes don't have a choice and with me the risks are way outweighted by the pain.

I agree with the pain outweighing other factors that would normally come first... I have back problems, but it was only a pulled muscle from doing an unrep on the ship when I was active duty, but it only locks up every now and then and I don't take medicine for it while I am pregnant, but considering how much it bothers me when it does give me problems, I can only imagine the h-e-l-l (lol) that you must have to endure.... But I do get frequent migraines, the disapilitating kind and I have a 2 1/2 yr old and a 1 1/2 yr old, my husband is in the navy and there is no way I can let it go on without taking the medicine that my doctor oked for me!! But at first I would suffer as long as I could if no one was around to help me because this med really knocks me out, I guess just knowing that I would have relief at night helped me deal with only taking tylenol until I could take something stronger before bed

I have to take my meds most at night becuase I also endure severe muscle spasms in my legs much like charlie horses but start and my hip and goes down to my tows to the point I shake and can't keep my legs still I used to take fexeril which is a muscle relaxor but i'm not takig them now. Because of teh type of pain meds I have been on ie morphine ect tyneol just won't work for me its not strong enoughh after being on pain pills of over a year straight several times a day i'm immune to most things and i'm unable to take advil and that becuase of a kidney condition. I just don't want people to think i'm careless or don't care abour my baby. This baby is a mircle baby and our last one. I was told not to get pregnant because of the carriage can become unstable and I will be paralyzedso the last thing i'm going to do is mess things up with this baby. The most that it will cause is preterm labor at this point and they already plan to take the baby a month early to avoid labor.

I wish there was something I could besides prayer!! It sounds like something that we would see on montel and not be able to believe that there are women out there that are strong enough out there to go through that.
