Constant Sore Red Throat!!!!!!!!!!! Posted: 10-29-04 20:43pm
Ok this is a bit long but it might ring
some bells for someone. I have posted a
similar piece on some other message boards
but this is the most up to date. It
sounds like many of us have the same sort
of sore throat, pmarie and I are old
friends.... :d ok, here goes. I started
getting the symptoms about eighteen months
ago. Before I go any further I have to
say that I was diagnosed with cfs and
fibro about fifteen years ago and have had
most of the symptoms that go with it, the
constant sore throat seems to be the
latest. When I got it I had the flu at
the time so I thought it was from the flu
because it was still sore a week or so
later. I went off to the doctor and they
gave me some antibiotics, that did no good
so they did a swab of the throat to see if
there was any bacteria there. All clear
there, so they put me on another course of
antibiotics but still no joy, in the end
they sent me to an ent, ears, nose and
throat specialist. He checked down my
throat to see if there were lumps to rule
out cancer then after finding nothing sent
me to a get a scan, a ct scan where they
inject you with a warm liquid and then
slide you into a machine that takes
x-rays, or something like that, of the
area they are checking out. That was
again to rule out any cancer. Nothing
showed up and I still had no answer so I
asked to see a second ent specialist and
after he examined me he said the other
specialist was right that there was no
cancer and he thought it was "post nasal
drip". Well I have taken the product
called "fess" that is to spray up your
nose for post nasal drip but again no joy.
Since then I have been to two other
doctors and they have not offered any
other solutions either, it is so
frustrating!!!!! I went to the third ent
in august and he said he felt I had
"reflux" even though I did not have the
symptoms for it. He checked up my nose
and down my throat with a camera and ruled
out any lumps as far as cancer went. I go
back to him this month (october) for a
follow up, nothings changed so it will be
interesting to see what he suggests.
Anyway the throat is still very red and
inflamed at the back and my voice goes
hoarse when I talk more than fiffteen
minutes or so, nothings changed. Just
before I started having the throat
problems I had some teeth extracted from
the top and bottom of my right had side
because I was getting pain there, my
dentist said there was nothing wrong with
the teeth but I said take them out because
they were killing me. Anyway to cut the
story short after they were taken out the
pain, although a lot less, was still in my
right hand jaw. I ended up going to a
oral specialist and he said that the
original pain in my teeth was not from the
teeth but from fibro myalgia and
myofascial pain, which is what I have had
for the last fifteen years since I had a
motor cycle accident. Now, as you know,
when you are sitting there with your
throat aching you try and think of things
that could of caused it or be causing it.
For me I am thinking maybe getting the
teeth pulled out caused more damage to the
jaw which in turn has irritated the
throat, the again maybe this had nothing
to do with it. I am only clutching at
straws but when you have this pain
continuously what else can you do. Have
you had any jaw problem? I have tried all
the things in alternative medicine books
for sore throats but still no relief. I
have had some times when the pain is not
as intense but it is still there, other
than that it is full on and driving me up
the wall. Well I am sorry if I went on
but maybe if any of you guys recognise
something that I am experiencing that you
also are going through I would love to
hear back from you with your thoughts and
if you have had any luck with finding out
what is causing yours.
By the way, I would really appreciate any
feed back.
Thanks

Hi,
my friend, cheryl, had pharyngitis and
found that aloe vera w/chamomille drink
was very soothing... Please try this.
Sounds like you need to rebuild your
immune system. I could recommend natural
solutions for you...

Hi alicia, thanks for the info. I have
never tried alo vera, so I will give that
a go. I am about to try the herb called
mallow, I read that it is very sore for
chronic sore throats. I will let you know
when I have tried the alo vera.
Thanks again.

I have also been suffering with a terrible
sore throat for months now. When I say
"suffering", I mean it! I've lost weight
and sleep. It is often unbearable. The
ent finally found thrush but the med
didn't relieve the pain. Once the thrush
cleared up, he could see my lingual tonsil
tissue had a bacterial infection. I went
on 2000mg of augmentin but I just finished
my third round of it. Every time I
finish with it (and the sore throat is
never quite gone), my throat gets worse
within a week. I know post-nasal drip
exacerbates the problem but he tested and
I have no allergies. If I have the
lingual tonsils removed because of chronic
infection, can I look forward to normal
life again? Has anyone else had them
removed with the same type of problem?
What is the recovery like? Feel free to
email me if you'd like, m

Me Too!!! Posted: 01-02-05 03:44am
Okay trying to make my long story short
since last december I have experienced
almost every symptom possible from
frequent loss of hearing, voice, and
memory to spitting up venti size cups of
phlegm, weight gain, sleep problems etc
all while maintaining this fantastic sore
throat. I’ve seen a few different doctors
at the walk in clinic taken antibiotics
taken everything on the shelf at the
health food store (i highly recommend
fatigued to fatigued to fantastic
supplements enzymatic therapy by Dr.
Jacob teitelbaum if you think you might
have chronic fatigue or if you have
epstein bar) anyways I have recently gone
to the chiropractor to see if fixing my
spine might help since it has major
connections to almost every function of my
body. I just saw my grandparents doctor
the other day and he said I may also have
post nasal drip he gave me flonase and
here I am now...I got more blood tests
last week to see if I am anemic I think I
was already tested for that 6 months ago
..Maybe this times a charm? I haven’t
been to the dentist in two years and I
have a fake tooth that I had a root canal
done on many years ago that comes out..
There’s a screw on the end that pushes up
into my gums. The tooth isn't supposed to
come out, and last time I visited, the
dentist said I need a bridge done. I
haven’t had the money. I'm wondering if
my being sick for so long has something to
do with infection and bacteria in my
mouth? Who knows! Certainly not anyone
i've met lately.

Feeling Great! Posted: 01-03-05 09:47am
My throat is almost normal and I wanted to
share with anyone suffering from long-term
sore throat. After 5 mos of medicine to
clear up thrush and a bacterial infection
that was difficult to treat, I still had a
terrible sore throat that was the worst
when I talked. I knew it was not reflux.
My doc did a video of my voice box since
he saw it was inflamed. I am not a
smoker. What he found was I was
straining it myself in a nervous movement.
Most likely I began this when I had the
undiagnosed pain for so long. You know
how you touch your tongue to a sore tooth?
Well, it wasn't anything I could see or
keep myself from doing. The simple
answer was a muscle relaxer and after 1
week, my throat feels better than it has
in almost a year! I will keep the muscle
relaxer because I may begin this any time
I am under stress or illness. I hope
this can help someone else!

hi chapstick, I am sorry it took me awhile
to respond to your e-mail but here goes.
Some people have the theory that problems
with the throat can be caused by tooth
problems and there is certainly truth in
that. From what you have outlined in your
e-mail there are many things you are going
through that I have gone through but that
is not to say you have the same thing as
me, which as far as I can work out is
"chronic fatigue syndrome" which also
tends to incorporate to some degree
"myofascial pain syndrome and
fibromyagia". By the way for those that
are not aware of it there is a difference
to "chronic fatigue" and chronic fatigue
syndrome". Check it out in google search
engine and you will get a run down of the
differences.
Chapstick, one thing I have tried lately
that has helped my throat is "mallow" tea,
comes in herb form and you put a teaspoon
in a tea pot of cold water and let it sit
there a few hours then sip it, do that
about three times a day. All I can tell
you is it seems to have settled mine down
a fair bit.
I dont know if this is much help, sorry if
its not.

marelle, you seem to be onto something. I
have always felt that the throat being
sore could be cause by the muscles in the
throat contracting for reasons unknown to
us. Stress sounds like a pretty good
reason to me. What are the muscle
relaxants you are taking? You will see
that I have mentioned to "chapstick" on
the message board that "mallow" tea has
soothed mine quite a bit.
Thanks for letting us know what has helped
you.

Muscle Relaxer Posted: 01-09-05 02:53am
Moad, I use the muscle relaxer called
"flexeril." it is the most potent and at
first it wiped me out. But after a week,
I was used to it and it no longer makes me
tired. I now have a prescription in my
night stand but have only used it once in
the last four days! I am even singing
with the congregation in church.
Something I haven't done in close to a
year! I still get a little hoarse and
feel my throat is tender but it will take
some time for the inflammation to be
completely gone. And something else has
happened, too. I am now much more aware
when I begin to flex my throat (you can't
see it from the outside) and I just take a
flexeril with no problems. This has been
a lifesaver for me, I can't begin to tell
you! I wish you luck!

Chronic Sore Throat With Fluid In the Ears Posted: 01-09-05 15:20pm
I have been having this issue for atleast
2 months. I went to the Dr. First
because I had this feeling of a lump when
I swallowed. Tested positive for strep 2
times in 2 weeks. Took aniti's penicillin
vk 250, amoxicillion 500, keflex 500 and
cipro. No of these seem to work. My
tonisills are red and sore with 2 streaks
down the back of my throat. Dr. Says its
from the post nasal drip. I have taken
sudafed, and ear ache meds and still no
help.
I have also felt 2 hard lumps like pmarie
has stated in my throat. I know I
shouldnt be sticking my fingers down ther
but , I cant take this anymore. Wanted to
feel what was going on. Dr. Also gave me
prednisone to get rid of the swelling.
Well that work for 3 days and now the
swelling is back. And I have been to the
Dr. 1 time a week for a month. Last time
I went the strep culture was neg. But
still red swollen tonsills with swollen
glands.
This really sucks and I dont know what to
do. Please if any one has any info. Let
me know. Dr.S seem to pratice more that
know how to cure.....

Babygirl27, as you can see by my very
first post you seem to have many of the
same problems as me, very inflamed
tonsils, streaks running down the back of
the throat.................Like you the
doctors all gave me conclusions like post
nasal drip and anything else they were use
to dealing with. My main concern was that
it was not cancer after lasting for such a
long time, thankfully it wasn't. I still
have the throat problem which will have
been with me for two years in february but
in the last month it has eased quite a
bit. I can only put this easing down to
the "mallow" tea I am drinking, i'm not
saying that's definitely what has eased it
but I can think of no other one thing that
I am doing differently. One thing I have
found is that a constant sore throat is
one of the main symptoms of chronic
fatigue syndrome, i'm also not saying you
have that either but it is worth finding a
good doctor who is aware of cfs and can
diagnose it properly to see if you have
it. Also have the test needed to rule out
cancer if that is a concern for you as the
lest stress you have the better. Anyway,
give "mallow" herb a go, it cant hurt and
it might help, make sure you drink it
three times a day for the first four or so
days and have the last cup just before you
go to bed so there is still residue in
your throat as you sleep. All the best
babygirl27, let me know if it helped if
you end up trying the herb tea.

should get my tonsils out. And I dont
think I want to do that. I am 28 and
heard the pain is really a rather dont do

Constant Sore Throat One Side Posted: 03-13-05 05:59am
Hello all you fellow sore throat
sufferers. I've just started searching
on the 'net to try and work out what's
wrong with me!
I smoked 20-30 cigarettes a day for 28
yrs, am now 49 yrs old and gave up the
people 14months ago after I had a sore
throat (right side) for a few months.
I'd seen various doctors during that time
and no-one took me seriously, it looked a
bit red sometimes that was it.
Now over a year later still have sore
throat and hoarse voice only on right
side. Sometimes I can't make myself
understood. I've seen the ent specialist
twice, both times he put the scope down to
view my thoat and vocal chords. First
time said a lot of lymph tissue at the
base of my tongue and a bit red but
nothing to worry about, 2nd time yesterday
said he couldn't see anything to worry
about. I've also had straight chest
x'rays, soft tissue neck and chest scan
(where you have dye injected that gives
you a warm rush just before scanning takes
place). Sinus x-rays. All ok (thank
god) but I still don't know what's causing
it.
I'm a sole parent to a 9 year old (had him
when I was 39) and was continually run
down with flu's and viruses when I was
working and he was in day-care, he
constantly brought home sickness.
I've had the same virus of sore throat
(both sides), sore ears, flu-like aching
all over, tired, headaches often for seven
years !! Now right sided constant sore
throat/ears and hoarse voice, often with
extreme tiredness, I had to give up work
about 3 years ago even before this
constant pain.
I don't go out much anymore, even to bible
study, I can't read aloud, i'm continually
cancelling out of functions I really want
to go to - including trying to get healthy
again by sport, just too tired.
I'm at my wits end as well.
I saw a naturopath for the first time a
few days ago, she asked me if I had any
suppressed anger towards someone that I
haven't let out !?? As it collects in
your throat and thymus gland (slightly up
from mid chest area I think). She gave
me a mixture of some foul tasting stuff
with too many ingredients to remember.
I'll let you know if it works.
I also had thought of reflux, i'm on tazac
capsules twice a day after an endoscope
showed a sliding hernia of my stomach,
although that was years ago after the
birth of my baby, and I don't do any of
the things that might stir reflux, such as
fizzy drinks, spicy foods, beding over
after eating. I also raised the head of
my bed a few months ago about 6 inches as
recommended for people with reflux ...
All this no difference to my throat/ear
voice.
Sorry this has gone on for so long, but I
guess we keep trying so many things. I
thought maybe my teeth as well, and
thought about seeing a neurologist. I
had to ask for most of the things I had
done, i'm sure some of "professionals"
think i'm a hypochondriac, but those close
to me know I can't talk half the time and
how tired I get. So i'll keep persisting
and let you know the results of anything
else I try !

Chronic Sore Throat Posted: 03-13-05 06:04am
I forgot to add that I had my tonsils out
when I was 13, so they are'nt the cause of
my sore throat. One lot of antibiotics
(that I asked for) for a trial to see if
that worked made no difference either to
me as someone else had said.
God have mercy on us and show us what to
do .... Please !

Well lyn, what can I say, only that I know
how you feel which of course does little
for you. I see you are in australia, so
am i, thats a good thing. I say that
because another person I know who has the
same thing lives in west virginia and she
has a real hard time getting to the
doctors as she has to pay for everything.
We are a lot better off down this way.
I suppose you have read my bit on how I
got to this place, I still have the sore
throat which was two years this feb past,
but I have noticed that it is not as sore.
At one stage for about 12 months it was
unreal, red raspy and driving me nuts. I
dont know what has caused it to calm down
other than I have been drinking a herb tea
called "mallow tea". In america it is
very hard to get but here the chemist can
get it in for you. Its a natural soother
for the throat. Drink it three times a
day for a week and then as you need it.
The important thing is to steep it in cold
water for at least 5 hours, over night is
best. So make some up in advance and
stick it in the fridge ready to drink. I
am not saying this will work for you lyn
but its worth a try, like you I have been
to every doctor under the sun and they
have done nothing so anything is worth a
go. I would also look into chronic
fatigued syndrome, that I belive, is how
mine started.
Let me know how you go lyn, my prayers are
with you.

I'm so glad to see all these posts...Well,
not glad, but still - i'm sick of doctors
telling me "oh, it's probably allergies"
or "oh, it's jsut post nasal drip."
i'm contstantly sick, either with a sore
throat, or stuffed up nose, or both...I
really wish I could get to the bottom of
this...
Going to see an ent as soon as I finish
this opera...
What's cfs, by the way?

Chronic Sore Throat For 5 Months!!!!! Posted: 05-17-05 12:44pm
I don't know if this story will sound
familiar to anyone, but i've been
suffering from tonsillitis and fatigue for
5 months starting in january this year.
I have always gotten several sore throats
a year, but they have always cleared up on
their own or with anitibiotics, but not
this time.
At first, it was mild so I ignored it.
The tonsils continued to swell and the
back of the throat appeared irriated. I
finally went to the Dr. And got on
antibioitics. The throat improved, but
then worsened as soon as I got off the
antibioitcs. Then I was diagnosed with
thrush and put on a series of anti-fungal
meds. No real improvement over weeks.
Then I was sent to an infectious disease
specialiast, diagnosed w/ strep type c,
and put on 2 lenghty antibioitic courses.
I always improved, and then worsened once
off the meds.
Finally, went to ent. He diagnosed
allergic rhinitis and said postnasal drip
was the culprit. He also said I had a
deviated septum explaining why the throat
is worse on the right side. I am on
nasanax and claritin now. For a few
weeks I felt better though my tonsils
remained huge. But again I have
worsened. I am at the end of my rope
with this....
I have never had seasonal allergies
before. I do have a mold allergy. I
have bought all new bed, bedding and
installed air filter in the bedroom. I
made an appointment w/ an allergist to
test again for allergies and double check
the medications i'm taking. I have also
made an appointment for a second ent.
I don't want to get my tonsils out b/c I
don't believe they are the problem. The
whole throat area is sore.
Has anyone else had experiece with
developing this sort of problem later I
life? I am 25 and have never experienced
anything like it. I am living in los
angeles and we did have an incredible
amount of rain which may have worsened the
amount of allergins in the air. However,
i'm from a rural area back east and never
had this problem before.
Does anyone have any suggestions for
treatments? I am really tired of having
a sore throat and fatigue for 5 months.
It is affecting my work and social life.
Every day is a challenge. My voice is
also minorly affected. It hurts/gets
hoarse after I talk for long periods of
time. My voice also sounds a little
different, though I think i'm the only one
who notices. Sore throat is worse in the
morning. It is red and irriatated.
Tonsils & glands very swollen. Pain
swallowing. No congestion, but does feel
like mucous drips down my throat
irritating it.
Thanks for listening...
