Q: Can Cardiac Arrest Cause Epilepsy

My daughter had a cardiac arrest when she was 2 weeks old , this was in july2000 now as of january 2004 she has seizures I would like to find out if the cardic arrest caused the epilepsy in any way.

Yes, I believe it can if there is oxygen deprivation especially. Has she had an mri to see if there is a visable damage to the brain? There is not always one with epilepsy, but sometimes...


I am so sorry that she now has seizures too! Is her heart ok now or is that still a concern? I know a boy who had heart surgery 3 times and that is probably what caused his epilepsy. He had 3 times on the heart lung bypass machine. He has also had some head injuries, though so they may never know for sure....


You might find more specific info at emedicine. They have a lot of neuro issues and you can do a search there for cardiac involvement and epilespy
