of no complications with my bypass the
doctors felt as though that it was not
related. I was told most likely it was
just a bacterial infection and to take
antibiotics and nexium and that the pain
should subside and I should be able to eat
again. They were wrong. I had all the
test which did not show anything was
wrong, and after many times to the doctor
and a loss of 16 pounds in 5 weeks was
still told that it was just an infection
of some kind. They were wrong. On the
night of july the 26th I experienced pain
to the point I could not walk and almost
passed out. I was taken to the emerg
room and it was identified that I had a
perforated gastric ulcer which almost
killed me. The surgeon who performed the
repair of the damages caused from the
ulcer stated that I am the second case
like this he has seen and that he felt as
though this was infact related to the
bypass as a side effect. The explanation
I was provided was that with the gastric
bypass that the new flow of food traveling
from the stomach into the intestine with
out the natural break down of digestion
of the food is the possible cause of the
complication since the intestine is not
prepared for foods that are not digested
fully of any kind. I would truly
recommend that you see your original
bypass surgeon and explain your concerns
to insure that you are followed closely.
Other possible side effects could be a
stricture. I only hope that they correct
your complications before you end up in an
emerg. Surgery as I did. Good luck.
:)
i have had the same exact complications.
I had my surgery in may of 2005. I had no
problems up until december of 2005. Since
then I have been in the hospital 3 times
now for a perforated ulcer. I just cant
seem to get this thing healed despite
being on everything for prilosec to
protonix, etc...
Its seems like every 3 or 4 months I have
another episode of excrusiating pain.
Last week was one of them. I wake up.
Stretch out and then the stabbing pain
starts and grows across my abdominal area
and up into my back into my shoulders
pulling down on all the muscles in my
body. I am still recovering from the
pain.
The thing is I really dont even foresee it
happening before it does. I literally do
not have any warning signs. It just hits.

I had gastric bypass September 2003 and I
have had nothing but problems since. I was
a healthy happy Mom but just over weight
before surgery. About four months post opp
I started getting depressed and drinking
and on top of that I was having spells
were I was getting week and sweaty and
almost ready to faint frequently. Not but
a year and a half later everything got
worse, I developed panic disorder and
because of all this I started to try and
hide all the pain with prescription drugs.
I was also getting terrible pain
periodically in my upper right hand side.
Doctors blamed everything on my addictions
so they refused to do anything. finally
six months ago I got sober and I was put
on a wonderful antideppressent. The
hypoglicimia symptoms didn't stop. Now I
am getting so dizzy and sweaty that I have
passed out and my blood sugar gets so low
that I have to check it constantly. I
still get pain in my upper right hand
side. finally I found a doctor that would
do glucose tests and he found that I was
definintly hypoglicimic. I get as low as
35. It is so scary as I am alone with my
children allot when these episodes arise.
My doctor has referred me to two
specialists and since I have changed my
diet and am eating every two to three
hours and nothing is helping he feels that
I am going to have to have surgery to
remove some or all of my pancrease. I am
so scared as I have been told how
dangerous the surgery is. Has anyone had
the surgery? Or does anyone know anything
about this? I so wish that I would have
never of had the surgery. It is so
miserable to live in such pain and sadness
when you have three children to care for.
I am so thankful to find a sight like
this. Good luck everyone.

I wrote back in 2005 about my pains. The
pains disappeared a couple of months after
my original post. I did have a recurrence
in May of 06 and 07 which led me to the er
with no results. Then this past September
(07), I started to get nausea and vomiting
after every meal. I thought I was just
sick, I went to see a GI who ran a couple
of tests and told me my espohgus needed to
be stretched, so her did it and told me
everything was good.
Well that did nothing for me, so I went
back to him and he performed a barium
swallow which came back that all the food
was going down just fine. So no problem
there. I decided it was time to change
doctors, so I went to Baylor in Houston,
Texas and saw my mother in laws doctor.
He diagnosed through an upper GI that I
have a 3.5 cm ulcer on my stomach pouch
(this was diagnosed in April). He
prescribed me Zergrid. Of course that
drug wasn't an authorized drug on my
insurace, and he said he wasn't going to
waste his time. So he gave me Protonix.
I took that pill for 6 weeks with no
relief (at this point I had already lost
25 pounds). I went back to him and he
recommended stomach revision.
I wanted a second opinion so I went to
another doctor in Baylor recommended by my
brother. He got me the Zergrid
prescription approved and a liquid called
Calafate (?). I have been taking both for
a month now, still without much relief. I
have still lost another5 pounds. I am
supposed to go back on July 11th for
another upper GI to see how the ulcer
looks, but I am thinking about calling
tomorrow and seeing if I can get in
sooner. I feel I have no choice but to
have surgery.
I am afraid I am going to end up in the ER
with a perforated ulcer, I have been
throwing up constantly for almost 9
months. Somedays I don't even attempt to
eat, then I feel okay. It has been real
tiring, I still teach school all day, come
home clean and cook, and I have still been
going to the gym, just not for as long as
normal. I am trying to keep a regular
routine, but my husband has noticed how
tired I am. I no longer want to go out
because vomiting in a public restroom is
no fun. I will keep you updated. Good
luck everyone.

Miracle Water Posted: 06-21-08 04:27am
I recently read a transcirpt from a
Japanese News broadcast. It was
introducing a medical device that produced
ionized water that was found to be very
effective in treating stomach and other
problems as well. It has recently been
approved in the usa.
Also I can maybe direct you to being able
to obtain more information and also
finding a source to obtain this water.

Me too Posted: 06-25-08 22:06pm
I had my gasto in November of 2007. Things
have gone well but like you all, I began
having the worst pain I could ever imagine
in the left flank area that goes around to
my back. I've had ct scans, blood work et.
and exploratory surgery via my gasto dr.
and nothing. The nurses looked at me like
I was crazy after the surgery and I've
become so frustrated, I've all but given
up. I deal with the pain everyday and has
gotten to the point I can't even think
straight because the pain is always there!
I believe it's my kidney (again, no one
will listen) so that is my next step. So
to all of you, I believe you!

I know what the pain is Posted: 07-11-08 13:40pm
I had my GB in September of 2003. Went
from 248 to 127, size 22 to size 4. I
immediately had the same pain everyone is
describing, a stabbing ache in the upper
left side under the rib cage. It comes
and goes. Most of the time it wakes me up
in the wee hours of the morning. I can
always tell it is coming by the pre-ache
and tightness. I used to go to the ER,
but usually by the time I was seen, it was
gone...lasts from 3-35 minutes. I had all
of the scopes and Bravo implant test, took
the acid reducers, saw plenty of
specialists, had my gallbladder out, and
nothing helped. So, I started helping
myself by trying to figure it out. What I
know is that taking any type of calcium
(including tums), eating too much calcium
(foods & milk), codeine cough syrup
and some liquid cold medicines will cause
an "attack"...sometimes almost immediately
with liquid products, and usually in the
middle of the night after taking calcium
vitamins. These products cause large air
bubbles, which causes the "attacks", and
causes you to writhe in pain. When you
feel it coming on, even though it is hard,
sit up straight, breathe deeply and
slowly, try to stretch your arms up, and
have someone pat your back. As weird as
it sounds, you need to burp. My bariatric
surgeon and my gastroenterologist said
that they believe I am right about what is
causing it...they aren't sure how to treat
it, so I just do the best I can on my own.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

I think skinnyminnie is on to something Posted: 07-15-08 21:37pm
I just found this site because I too am
having the same pain. I had GB in Oct
2003 and never had any problems until now,
this excruciating epigastric pain. A CT
was normal, an endoscope showed an ulcer
but I have at least one of those going on
all the time, I'm used to dealing with
that. The pain I'm having recently is
definitely different. It comes on
suddenly, with no link to any foods. The
one thing I did notice was that it only
subsided a little if I could manage to
burp at all, which wasn't easy because I
don't seem to be gassy with an urge to
burp or anything and moving around,
massaging my midsection, etc. doesn't seem
to help me burp. It's as if a huge amount
of air is suddenly under my diaphragm with
no where to go and I don't know how to
help it get out. It seems to take hours
to eventually work it's way down and out
of my system and I'm miserable until it
does. A hot water bottle across my
midsection seems to help a little, but
maybe that's just psychological. It
started about 2 weeks ago, off and on, and
I know I won't be able to live like this
and keep my job, that's for sure so I have
to figure something out...It's definitely
scary to find out this is actually common
and doctors are clueless. I got the good
old last resort diagnosis too, ADHESIONS
(scar tissue). I think they just throw
that one at you when they simply don't
know.

I have been reading a lot of your postings- LISTEN CAREFULLY Posted: 07-27-08 22:21pm
To begin, research has shown that GBS is
proving to have a lot of cons, especially
kidney problems, bone disease, sever
malnutrion, eletrolyte embalance, and even
death. And this is months or years later.
My case for example. I had first time ever
kidney stones which has to be blasted
(lithotripsy), and then had an e-coli
infection of the kidney. Hospital stay 3
weeks. As it turned out the stone was
Calcium. And now I learn the 1200mg
mandatory calcium supplement was making
the stone. To make matters worse, I have
arthritis, osteoporosis, and back
problems. So bypassing the dueodeum is it
really worth the risk of loosing all those
nutrients we need? I want to be thin, but
being healthy and feeling good is more
important. One person said she is afraid
to eat, I empathize with her, because I
KNOW exactly how she feels. I am almost
paranoid to eat because of the pain I know
I might have.
So here is so advice. Find a Good doctor,
who will not leave any stones unturned. I
have one, and he is great. We are getting
out case together to approach the surgeon
for an answer because I cannot live like
this. But and this is a big but. Get to
a good reputable teaching hospital. The
best in the area. Even if you have to
change insurance groups. Do research,
find the caddalac doctors, not the quacks.
Read, read, and read. When you have left
flank pain, or right flank pain, its your
kidney. Unless its the left it could be
the kidney or the spleen. There are
simple tests that can be done. Ask for a
Renal ultrasound. YOU MUST LEARN TO BE
YOUR OWN ADVOCATE AND ASK THESE DOCTORS TO
DO THESE TESTS. But first do some
research. Know this too, these all think
were crazy. Except my doctor, he takes me
seriously.
