Glad to Hear It!
Glad to hear that you're feeling better! Sounds like your new diet and supplementation is really working. I think I might try the things you've done because it sounds like our particular symptoms are simiular. I too remember that these problems started after taking antibiotics:( well us know your status if anything new comes up. Thanks for you time.

Question
I have a question? How many of you have laptops and how many of you put them in your lap? Do any of you notice any change in the way your stomach feels when you have had your laptop in your lap for a while? Not that this might be a reason but just curious to know your experiences. For me, I feel like my stomach is a lot more sore and 'tired' after I use a laptop( on my lap) for a couple of hours.

Psyllium Husk
I have exactly the same symptoms that people describe here. Sometimes i'm fine, but it seems like in situations where I am in a room with a lot of other people and the room is very quiet and I have to listen all the time rather than actively participate in a discussion... My mind just seems to go into a downward spiral where I start thinking my stomach is going to make noise, my stomach/intestines seem to tighten because of the anxiety and then the noises seem to come.... This in turn makes my stomach tighten more and the noises get worse and worse.

I have been prescribed bentyl for the problem and if I take a bentyl as well as a 5mg valium before a meeting I am worried about... It seems to take my mind off the problem.. I stop worrying and I don't get any stomach noises. Obviously, this isn't a very good long term solution because it makes me drowsy and kind of messes up the whole day.

The only natural product I have found will lessen the problem is taking large doses of psyllium husk every day or twice a day.

Also,
coffee, sodas and black tea(not as bad as coffee) defininitely make the problem worse.

It's interesting that I can drink coffee on days when i'm very relaxed and not in these situations and I don't seem to have any problems... Very weird!!!

When it's bad it can be extremely embarassing... But i'm trying to take my mind off the fact that it's embarassing because the more I worry about it the worse it gets.

Exactly!!! By quiet rooms, where you have to listen all the time rather than actively participate in a discussion, you mean the classroom right?

And I know, sometimes everything is perfectly fine, but the minute you are surrounded by people, it starts. The funny thing is that sometimes i'm in my room at home, for a couple of hours and everything is fine. The 'moment" somebody walks in, it makes those noises again. They walk out, its fine. I just don't understand!!!!!!!!!!!

Last semester, I could hardly focus on school. I think I could have gotten better grades last semester.

I think this is a unique problem we all have, I mean if this was documented we would be able to find a solution on the internet by doing google searches, but instead google searches brings us here, we all agree that this is one of the worst parts of our lives, and we desperately want it to end, so what are we going to do about it, we all need to work together, research, and figure out a way to stop this torture, i’ve been suffering with this humiliation and pain since the 9th grade in high school, I didn't do anything about it then because I thought it would go away, here I am, in freshman year of college, and I can't concentrate on the teacher because i’m sucking my stomach in, i’m paranoid and nervous, it's gotten so bad that I don't know if my stomach grumbled or not, and when it does for some reason I hope it wasn't mine but someone’s next to me, but that can't be the case because it happens in all the classes.

In my last class their is an individual who has the same problem as me, he seems to be new to it, he doesn’t know how to suppress it, and he sits in front of the class, his stomach explodes whit noises and he has a shocked and disappointed look on his face, he immediately says something to take the focus off of his noise, you can also see that his face is beet red as well as his neck, I wonder if that’s how we look when we gurgle.

Anyways I know there are lots of people out there with this hellsome problem, we all know its the same thing, maybe slightly different in some people, we all want it to stop as soon as possible, we all have found this forum and more people will find it and join, I encourage you to register and post here if you have this problem and come across this, we need to get a number of active posters keeping this alive.

I haven't checked or typed much on this lately but now i’m going to make it an all out war on this problem, i'm going to make a webpage about it were we can analyze data, get a demographic, post tests and results and except requests.

Please let me know if you want to be a part of this.
We don’t need to use our real names or locations.

This is great to discover others with the same problem. I seem to have the exact same thing; intestinal noise or "borborygmus" which seems to be induced by perhaps a combination of psychological triggering (being in a classroom taking a test in silence - perfect example), and also probably some medical component. This is not ibs, unless you use the general common definition of the disease, but technically, this is something much more specific. Personally, I suspected I suffered from a case-specific psychiatric problem and that I was simply going crazy. I thought, no one else has this huge anxiety of going to class or being in quiet environments...So whats wrong with me? Therefore I think this is caused by the combination of psychological factors as well as medical ones.

This has severely affected my life. I feel lucky to still be in the position I am, and that I have pretty much been able to hold my life together. I am taking the mcat exam this saturday, and hope to apply to medical school this summer. I started this problem probably in 9th or 10th grade...I'm now 21. And i'm not looking forward to sitting in a room packed with people in silence, taking an 8hr test this saturday...Thats right, if you think a 50min in class test is bad, imagine 8 hours of silence. Haha, I have no idea how im going to handle this, but we will see.

So heres my best guess at what the hell is going on. But what do I know, i'm not a doctor yet, haha. We all experienced some sort of intestinal noise in a high stress/anxiety type situation such as a silent room with people in it. This was embarassing enough to the point where we all became obsessed and consumed with the problem, which increases anxiety and cyclically makes the problem worse and worse. The noise is caused by "boli" of digesting food in our intestines that is moving around and creating gas pockets which causes the noise. The movement of boli in the intestine is due to peristalsis (contractions of the smooth muscle surrounding the gi tract under control of the parasympathetic nervous system). So....Yur guess is as good as mine.....The anxiety somehow induces aberrations in the parasympathetic triggering of peristaltic contractions which makes the god damn noise. If I make it through the mcat, get into med school, I think I owe it to people to do research on this, because i've looked, and found nothing as specific as what we have all described in all the major medical journals. More to come...

Wel I went to the doctor the other day and braved it through the silent waiting room. I told him about all my symptoms and the hell its been causing me and he asked me some questions and he said hes certain I have ibs. Neway he prescribed me these tablets called 'mebeverine', if any of you want to research that.. Its like an anti-spasmoid, and he said should stop cramps and stuff and will hopefuly stop my stomach going into spasms, causing the noises. I go back to school tomoro, and I have taken one this evening for the first time, and my stomach feels pretty ok! It would usually be making noises after ive eaten... But no. I realy hope it carries on this way. I wil post another comment asap and tell u all how its going.

Noisy Intestines
I wish I could offer a solution, but all I can do is commiserate with you. I have exactly the same problem, and have been dealing with it for about 25 years. Curiously enough, like many of you, my first experience with this occurred when I began university. It was an incredible ordeal to sit through classes, constantly worried that my intestines would make noise (which they invariably did, the more I worried), or god forbid I would fart. Well, the worry led to situational anxiety and I think you all understand what I have and do deal with.

I've tried many different "cures" etc. For this, and none work. I've simply adopted the philosophy that if i'm in a situation where my stomach is making noises, and i'm getting embarrassed or anxious, I leave. Sometimes this just isn't possible, so I suffer through it. That may sound glib, but it's just reality.

Here's a positive note though; i'm surviving and functioning at a very high level, in a resposible job, with a great wife and a terrific social life; and i've done so for the past 25 years (i'm 45 now). It's ridiculous that I consider this such a handicap, because many people have expressed envy at how confident and together I appear. I guess I really am, except for this. The short answer to all of this is that we all live with things we wish we different. Don't be discouraged; you'll survive!

Gurgle gurgle (whoops, well, you guys will forgive me for those intestinal noises, i'm sure)

Something that I forgot to mention in my earlier post that I think is important is that I never seem to suffer from the problem if I am standing up. In any of the situations where it happens, I am always sitting down on a chair. If I am standing up, it seems that the digestion occuring in my intestines doesn't cause this noise. Perhaps there is a clue there. It's happened to me once or twice when i've been standing up... But 99% of the time if I stand up, the problem goes away.

I've also noticed that it can happen when i'm lying down... But not to the same extent as when I am sitting. This makes no sense to me whatsoever, but seems to be true.

Anyone else have the same opinion?

Yeah I agree with you matt

probably 90% of the time it happens is when i'm sitting in a chair. The other 10% is when i'm lieing down, usually before bed. I'm not sure why...But it'd be nice to figure it out.

Yeah same it never happens when I stand. Happens a lot when im lying down and usually wen I go to bed and in the mornings. My boyfriend has gotten used to it thank goodness lol and I feel very comfortable around him so I dnt care when it happens with im with him.
Went back to school today, first lesson we got given a half hour test which we didnt know about.. Absolutely silent of course. The teacher hands out the papers and I am literally peeing on the spot I was mega nervous. And guess wat? No noise! No sound whatsoever. And it must have been those tablets, and in the end I managed to calm myself down by doing the 7/11 breathing and I was fine! It was great I havnt felt like that in ages. After that the rest of the day was easy..

I have just been reading about aloe vera juice and flaxseed oil for ibs:
aloe vera has natural healing and detoxifying powers and works gently within the intestinal tract to help break down impacted food residues and thoroughly cleanse the bowel. It can help ease constipation and prevent continuing diarrhoea, setting a regularity to the bowel. All this helps to reduce discomfort and bloating. Naturally, as these symptoms are eased, so the stress associated with the discomfort is also reduced.
Heres wat I read about flaxseed oil: flaxseed oil (also known as linseed oil) is extracted from flax seeds. It has a delicate, nutty flavor and is an excellent source of protein, potassium, and beta-carotene. It also contains a beneficial fat, alpha-linoleic acid, which is a heart-healthy omega-3 fat. There is some scientific data that indicates that flaxseed oil combats constipation and ibs, and preliminary studies suggest that it also guards against high cholesterol and hypertension.

Have also read some more about symptoms of ibs and guess wat comes up: flatulence and belching often associated with a disturbed, rumbling gut.
Sounds familiar doesn't it. I'm certain I have ibs, and if any of you have read about my symptoms on previous posts and have similar ones then maybe you do too. If you want to get rid of this problem then just try all sorts of things like the stuff ive been writing about that ive researched and consulted a doctor and food adviser about.

Probiotics
Hi rachie,

what was your progress with the probiotics? What happened? Why did you switch to using the antispasmodic medicine?

Looks like you people are looking for natural alternatives. How many of you tried the pineapple juice? And the pumpkin seeds? Please tell me how they work.

With the pumpkin seeds it feels like your stomach is getting stronger, and the pineapple juice stops the cramps and spasms, kind of like "turning your stomach off" for about an hour or so. They are not perfect but help reduce the severity of the problem. The problem with the pineapple juice is that it makes me gassy. But its almost just the same as the people drinking pop next to me.

If it was really a candida infection, then from what I read in the internet, the steps were to:
1) stop the candida growth
2) reintroduce the friendly bacteria
3) meanwhile strengthen the stomach or intestine so it would have the ability to fight for itself

from what I remember step 3) consisted of using multivitamins

and the pumpkin seeds act like multivitamins I guess. And the most important part is that they have magnesium in them. Magnesium is a stress reducer!!!! From what I know there are only a few sources of magnesium, besides green leafy vegetables.

This might be why pumpkin seeds have been making me feel a bit better.

Well, this was reducing my problem to a tolerable amount for the last couple of months. A few days ago I ate pizza, and my problem has gotton noisier. If megs123 was right and if it was a candida infection, it might be the yeast in the pizza that made the candida worse.

I don't think its ibs that we have, yes we have some of the symptoms of ibs, but I don't think what we have can be considered full blown ibs, I doubt that our disease or whatever it is has even been documented, its on us to do what we can to find a cure, as wee keep this post alive more and more people with our problem are finding it. Hopefully all of us brainstorming together can find a cure, ill be back with more input later and or ideas later.

I can give some hints right now, don't take early classes, waking up early seems to trigger a bad grumbling effect through the whole day, another tip for those that are in college, if you have breaks between classes, i’ve thrdiscovered that if you eat a taco bell burrito, I usually eat 2 beef and potato ones, the noise will be suppressed for up to two hours, maybe because of how its digested.

I got class in an hour; i’m headed to taco bell right now to eat my 2, or else my stomach would grumble loudly and wildly through the whole class.

Anyway hope that helped, keep this alive.

Wheat Allergy?
Yeah I tried the whole probiotic bit and it didn't do much for me:( i'm trying to stay off wheat though for the next couple of days to see how I feel, a lot of people are telling me that it's probably a wheat allergy. I don't care if it is, I just want to feel better even if I have to give up eating oatmeal and stuff:( have you guys gone on a gluten free diet?

Omg I Found the Problem! Wow
Omg I found the problem! Wow

my brother is doctor and I told him what my problem was, that I have too much gas, weird uncomfortable stomach sounds and he recommended exercise! Simple right? But it works! I realized that we all don’t digest food properly and our digestion system creates gas as a result! Causing those weird sounds

to test his theory I ate some food, rested for 2 hrs and then hit the gym for about 1hr! When I went to my lecture that night, not a sound! Not a peep! I realized exercising helped my body digest the food! As I lost energy and calories my body was digesting the food in my stomach to keep up with my rapid energy loss! This flushed my system out! I also drank 2 bottles of water! Wow did I feel good! Try it! You need to flush your system and exercising is one way!

It’s been 2 weeks now and I haven’t heard a peep after exercising! Piz people try it! This maybe the solution to our problem! I also lost 4 pounds!

Good luck

Heat Therapy
Im glad that helped! Yeh ive heard that excercise really helps and I have noticed a couple of times that wen I have excercised my stomach feels much better. Another thing ive jus remembered that ive read about and has helped is heat therapy.. Like just having a hot shower, and I jus run the hose over my stomach for bout five minutes as hot as I can get it. Or if u have a chance take a sauna or something. U can also get heat wraps to put round your stomach that u can wear all day under clothing which I might try, especialy for my exams n stuff..
