Q: How Early Does Blood Preg Test Work?

I am wondering if anyone knows for sure how early you can take a blood preg test? My doc says after missed period but I know its earlier than that as my prev doc had said something else (i just can't remember exactly what it was). I have heard anything from 7 days after ovulation to 12....

I am only about 7 days after ovulation and took test. (i am on a fertility monitor) I know it was probably too early but thought it was worth a shot. Test was negative.

My breasts have never been so tender. Touching them would put me through the ceiling! This never happens to me. I'm also exhausted. I would be shocked if i'm not pregnant...I don't know of any other reason causing sore breasts like this. I did test too early, correct? When would be good to retest? Do I have to wait all the way till a missed period?

Dear dreamsicle,

i am assuming you took a home pregnancy test, in which case you are correct in saying it was too early. Depending on the particular test you used, a home test would be more effective a couple of days after your period is due. You would need to read the instructions on the packet of the test to find out how sensitive that particular one actually is. As for the blood test, they are the most accurate test you could possibly have, and technology today allows doctors to detect hcg levels (pregnancy hormone) in the blood as early as 7 - 12 days like you said. Exhaustion, tiredness, sore or tender breasts, sensitive nipples and frequent urination are signs of early pregnancy, and the fact that you are monitoring your fertility it is quite possible you could be pregnant.

Good luck,

Thanks very much. The test I took at 7 days was a blood test... Not an hpt. In thinking about it though, I know you can have sex one day and not actually be pregnant for a couple of days after that...(it can take that long for the egg to fertilize) plus we had sex in the evening, and I took the test first thing in the morning of day 7..... So maybe I wasn't "really" at 7 days yet. I guess i'll just retest next week sometime and see ...

I can't imagine another reason for my breasts hurting so badly. They are hot to the touch and very heavy and engorged compared to my normal self. Its the kind that makes your skin hurt all over cause they hurt so bad! I guess I was just *hoping* that positive would show right away.

Send some baby dust my way, okay?
And if you know of any other reason this might happen besides pregnancy, let me know. (i am not on hormones, etc.)

thank you!!!!

Dear dreamiscle,

lol I don't know any other reason for breasts hurting that much apart from being period symptoms, but the things you have described sound like pregnancy symptoms. The engorged feeling in your breasts is exactly what I feel when I am pregnant, as if they are full or tightened. I hope your test is positive next week.

Good luck,
