I have to have my tonsils out on 10-22 and I am 35 years old. Has anyone had this done as an adult? I have to have it done because there is a cyst on one of the tonsils. I am really worried about it, I just had a hysterectomy in august and am finally feeling good from that. Wondered if anyone had input or suggestions! Thanks

Oh you poor thing I feel your pain. I'm 25 and had my tonsils out 6 months ago. My tonsils were extremely infected and didn't respond to antibiotics. I was sick for 4 straight months. So, it was decided the best way to make me better was to have them out. The surgery wasn't bad, it was actually pretty easy, I think it took less than an hour. The first week I was on pain medication and eating soft foods (mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, soup, applesauce, popsicles, etc.). Because the medication I was on made me sleepy and groggy and was getting to the point it made me feel worse than better, I weened myself off it by the end of the first week. I was still mostly eating soft foods until the end of the second week. By then I was able to eat most foods, the exceptions being very crunchy foods. I think total recovery time took a little over a month. The hardest thing I found throughout the recovery was not being able to open my mouth all the way. It was probably 4 - 5 weeks before I could do that. It is very hard to keep your mouth from opening all the way when you need to yawn. That was my hardest obsticle. The majority of the pain was over within the first week. The little bit that remained came mostly from opening my mouth too wide before it was healed. I hope this helps a little. Its not a fun thing to go through but I know at least for me, it really helped me out a lot. Since the surgery I haven't been sick once. I hope everything goes well for you. Good luck!!

I Had Mine Out Yesterday And Im 27 And...
along with my tonsils, i had my adenoids and my uvula removed. and in addition to that.....i had my septum corrected. the main piece of advice i have for you is TO STAY HYDRATED. no matter what, keeping fluids in you is key and do not be afraid to stay at the hospital afterwards and have them give you IV's. you will have a sore throat but its not any worse than strep throat. the most annoying thing the discomfort, which is very bearable. so dont worry about it, as long as you keep fluids in you, you will feel really good. and the first night after, drink as much as you can.
