Hello! I am kinda new to this...
My daughter spent her sweet 16 in the hospital with a staph infection on her cervex that turned to toxic shock syndrome. It was very unusual and the doctors had not seen anything like it...Any way...She was recovering from that and she came down with what they thought at the time was mono...And she was hospitalized again...She was released from the hospital on 9/3/04. Since then we have visited the er 7 more times...Blood in her urine, chest pains, stomach pains, blood in her stools.. And everytime they have told her it is just the mono and have sent us home....
Yesterday she came to my office and she had the butterfly rash across her cheeks, nose and I thought of lupus...When I got home I opened my mail and a letter was in my box from our Dr. Telling us that one of her blood tests...Ana had come back speckled and we should see a rheumatologist soon. We happened to have a doctors appt today with our gp and he believes that she may have lupus. We can not get into see anyone for 4 weeks. My concern is this----i don't believe she ever had mono...I think it has been lupus all along...And if that is the case she has been in a "flare up" for almost 2 months...Kidney and chest pain....And with no treatment....Should I insist we get in sooner...Or is it ok to wait...Help!!!....

16 Year Old Daughter
Hi jodi,
welcome. I know how helpless you must have been feeling all this time watching your daughter go through all of this. To answer your question, yes, I think you should insist on an appt. Right away. More blood work will have to be done, and that will take some time to come back, for the doctor to review it, and for him/her to make the diagnosis. You may feel a little sheepish if you're wrong about the urgency of this, but you'll never forgive yourself if something else happens in the meantime, and your assertiveness might have made the difference. I would have the gp contact the rhuemy and explain that this is urgent. If the gp won't do that for you, you'll have to be firm and persistent with the rhuemy. Don't panic and sound irrational, but don't back down either. I wish you and your daughter the best, and may she find relief soon.
