Right click on the file and choose "open with" then find word, or first open word, then go to file -> open and find the file and open it. Then save as and make sure you change the document type to "word" or .Doc.

A zip file? Its kind of like a filing cabinet. You can take lots of individual files and folders and put them into one new file. It compresses the files (makes them take up less space than when they were all separate), plus now they are all attached. Its a great way to transfer multiple files. The compression part of a zip file doesn't work on data like audio, video, or image files very well, and it doesn't help to zip a file that's already a zip file to try to compress it more. You can use programs like winzip for windows or tar, gzip, bzip, or zip for the *nixes to create zip files.

When I click to open it.. A little box that says at the top

convert file format
(space)
convert file format from:
(drop down menu with a bunch of different word type programs. When I click on one it either says unkown file format. Or says converting file, and then when it's done nothing happens)

You have to unzip it first. You know that right? Unzip it with winzip and it won't be a zip file anymore.
