Q: Anyone Thats Had An Epidural

My back hurts, it feels like its bruised, and its right where I had my epidural, I asked kevin to look and see if he could see a bruise, but there wasnt one, he said there was a red dot though. I touched my back until I found the most sensitive spot and asked him if thats were the dot was and he yea. Its right where I got my epidural, kevin said you can still see where it went in, and thats what the red dot is. But why would it hurt? Did they mess something up? Has this happened to anyone else? It hurts sometimes when I stretch or bend over, like if I was sittin in a chair and I were to turn around to see something behind me, it hurts, when I touch it, it hurts. It doesnt hurt bad, but it still bothers me. It just feels kinda like a bruise, but why would it be bruised 5 weeks later? It hurt for until a week after I got it, but then it stopped, but now its started again. Lol sorry this is so long, I just dont know why it would hurt.

So its normal? I was worried that they damaged a nerve or something. I sliced my hand open awhile ago, and I cut right through a nerve, I never went to the hospital or anything for it, I just butterfly bandaged it up and it healed just fine, but now I got no feeling in 1/3 of my thumb. Its really sensitve to cold, it hurts when it gets cold, but feels fuzzy when it should hurt (like if I poke it or pinch it). Oops im just rambling on about my thumb Laughing

Hey girlie-
the only think I can think of is this. I think you may have a postpartum backache which is a side effect of the epidural. It only happens in around 22% of women, but that doesn't mean nothing, just means you may be apart of that 22%.
· may last a few days or continue for years. Possibly due to “stressed” positions in labor exacerbated by muscular relaxation and the absence of feedback pain to tell you to get out of a damaging position.

· may (rarely) be caused by nerve damage.

Things that can help you..
· change positions frequently

· stay off your back

· practice pelvic and back strengthening exercises to prepare for childbirth.

· consider choosing a cse, or intrathecal epidural to allow you more sensation and to avoid awkward positions.

Otherwise, it may just be as you described it just a bruise. Is there a bruise there or just your little red mark?

I had the same thing, I would ask sheldon to see if there was a bruise and he would say no and I would get mad. It turns out that it is most definitely from the epidural, and yes it's totally normal.

Im glad its normal, and im not the only one... Brenda, do you bruise easily, or do you get irritated/bruised from needles, like if you get a flu shot does it hurt for like a month like its bruised but there wont be a visable bruise? Im just curious if thats what it is, cuz thats the way my body is.

I had a friend who got one and they tore her spinal membrane and her spinal fluid leaked out (the fluid that cushions your spinal cord and brain) and now she has chronic headaches because her brain is resting at the bottom of her skull instead of floating in spinal fluid!!

My mom had an epidural for josh, me, and harlee and then had troy natural.
Ever since her 3rd epidural she has really bad back problems. Not all the time.....But like once a month for a few days it's bad.

I had the epidural and was the same way. I had a lil bruise and then the red dot. Ryan would brush his hand over it and it would make me flinch because it was so sensitive. So id think its normal since most of us has experienced it Wink

While you guys say it is normal, it's not normal as in right it's normal as in it is common to get back pain after an epidural, but it is not right.
One of the reasons why I really don't want one.
After all, what they have done is stuck a big catheter into your spine and injected nerve blocking drugs into space near your spinal cord hmmmmmmmmmm nice.
Because epidural has become common place, many women don't think about what it is, what it really is. I mean how many people would you let stick you in the back, with a big needle, then leave an open catheter in???
It's a dangerous albeit common practice.
