Q: Tetracycline And Side Effects (bruising, Etc.)

I am taking doxycycline (i believe 30 mg) daily, and I have been taking it for a few months now. I read something about the uncommon side effects of it (very briefly) and I saw something about spotting or brusing or something.

Lately I have been getting a whole lot of bruises from I don't know where. They are the color of previous bruises i've had but there are a lot more of them. I have a light olive complection but my skin is very sensitive. But still, I never remember hving so many bruises. Could this be from taking tetra/doxycycline? If not does anyone know what else this could be from? Also, does it have any other weird side effects? Thanks.

I've taken both tetracycline and doxycycline. I had no side effects with tetra. It actually got rid of all my acne, and nothing bad ever resulted from it. However, with doxycycline I had a lot of problems. I only actually took it for two days because it made me so sick. The first day I got the prescription I took the pill in the afternoon and a few hours later had a horrible headache. I had to lie down in the dark to alleviate the pain. I fell asleep doing that, and almost didn't wake up in time for school the next day, which was not normal for me (i slept for twelve hours straight). I took another pill with my breakfast that morning and within twenty minutes vomited, and continued to do so the rest of the day. That was when I decided to flush the rest of the pills.

I never noticed any bruising or anything like that, although as easily as I bruise, it probably would have seemed normal anyway.

Yeah, I normally bruise easily too, so i'm not sure. I used to get horrible stomache aches right after I took the d pill in the mornings which I never got with t, and I took 4 a day since they were a smaller dosage.

How long did it take for your face to clear up altogether? I've been using it for almost 4 months I think.

With the t I started clearing up after a month, and about three months after starting it I had cleared up completely (my whole body). However, I was also using topical clyndamycin at the time, which may have helped (or not, I don't know). I never had any luck with the d, since it made me throw up every time I took it.

Wow, 4 times a day!!! I only had to take one a day! They must have given you a weird prescription.

It was a really small dose 4 times a day, at the beginning, and since t is 4 and d is 12 I assume they lowered it from the initial 16 to 12 daily.

Yeah, my whole body cleared up after about a month which was so great. But still I have some on my face that doesn't go away. It's not horrible or anything, probably just something I have to grow out of.

I am also using tazorac gel once a week (i can only use it once a week cause everytime I use it it makes my face peel no matter how much I moisturize) and duac gel which has benzyol stuff and something that starts with a c what might be what you mentioned. It seems to help but I don't know if it's the pill or the gel working cause they were both prescribed at the same time.

It is most likely the pill. I know I tried every topical medication out there with no success until I started taking the pill, too. I am now back on erythromycin, and it's not doing anything. I'm going to have to get an appointment to get some more t, I think.
