Hey guys I know this is a horrible subject but im doing an essay on abortion, an argument for and an arguement against. Now it's about a baby being legally aborted in the uk up to the age of 24 weeks. What I need to know is any facts about the babies. Like what they can do then! I want to put it across that it is a baby not a feotus.

thanks
suzi

Starting at 8 weeks: kick and straighten her legs, turn them round and move her arms up and down.

At 10 weeks: move her arms and legs with a range of movements that are fluid and supple.

At 11/12 weeks: sucking their thumbs... Produce a motion approximating to a yawn.
At 22 weeks: capable of fine hand and finger movements... Exhibits behavour identical to what he will do after birth... The brain has developed sufficiently to enable him apparently to sense the other parts of his body... Can bring his fingertips together so they touch.

At 24 weeks: retinal development is complete, babies open and close their eyes intermittently... Perfect the blinking reflex, which will protect his eyes once he's born.

Week 8 - fetus begins producing brain waves.
Week 10 - heart almost completely developed.
Week 12 - vocal cords completely formed. Fetus can cry and feel pain and smell.
Week 13 - the fetus has acquired more reflexes: touching the palms makes the fingers close, touching the soles of the feet makes the toes curl down and touching the eyelids makes the eye muscles clench
week 14 - spontaneous movement begins. The fetus controls his/her movement. Begins to make sucking motions with mouth.
Week 16 - fetus can suck its thumb, and likes to play with the umbilical cord.
Week 18 - fetus can blink, grasp, and open and close its mouth.
Week 20 - fetus can hear, learn, and react to stimuli. Starts to swallow amniotic fluid.
Week 22 - fetus reacts more to sound now.
Week 23 - 15% chance of survival if born.
Week 24 - all components of eyes developed. Fetus has hand and footprints. 56% chance of survival.
Week 25 - 75% chance of survival.
Week 26 - fetus can inhale and exhale. Fetus has sense of taste. % of survival if born.

i couldn't get that one to work, but this one does. Resources, abortion, and pictures are capitalized (first letter) and weeks is all caps.

I'm pro choice. I have so much more to say than that, but I can't. I would think that as women, you wouldn't condemn the fact that you and every other woman has the choice made available to them. I don't agree with abortion as a form of birth control, and I would never do it myself, but I think people who fight against the right to choose are really setting women back a few decades.

Dude! We're just trying to help the girl. She asked for information about what a baby/fetus (whatever you want to call it) can do at and up to 24 weeks. We're not trying to sway her one way or another, and we're definatly not trying to make this one big abortion debate! If you'll look closely, nobody said anything about themselves being prochoice or prolife... All we did was post some information or links! I don't mean to sound harsh or mean, I just don't want this whole thing to get blown out of proportion!

Also is anyone upset that I asked this of you?? I know it's just for an essay. But whats better than to ask the people who have first hand knowledge of it

in the uk a baby can be legally aborted at 24 weeks, I am pro choice but I really feel the cut off limit should be 12 weeks. That is what my essay is going to be about im not trying to condem anyone and I respect anybody who totally disagrees with the whole process!

I don't have a problem with you asking... And I don't think that I should! I think it's cool that you're doing an essay on abortion. I'm prolife (i believe that abortion is completely wrong), but I won't condem anybody who chooses to have one because "judge not and be not judged." good luck with your essay!

I wasn't being erratic, I just read two topics about abortion in a row and it was late. I probably should've posted that in the other one, but now I honestly don't remember. Everything just runs together sometimes for me. I don't think it's wrong at all that you asked.

The girl who posted thinks it's a "baby not a fetus" -- but it is a fetus, so if you are looking for "facts" that is one of them. "what they can do then" at 24 weeks, is absolutely nothing. They can't eat or suckle or breathe. They generally can't really digest.

I think there was some statistics recently that only about 30% of babies born below 26 weeks survive, and most of them have physical and mental handicaps. That is not to say that if a baby is born prematurely that it shouldn't be saved -- but that in effect what you have is a fetus that is now without its human incubator and has to be put in a technological one.

In holland, babies born at less than 24 weeks are not kept alive, they are allowed to die.

There are very few late term abortions, and almost all of those are for medical reasons.
